NEWS AND EVENTS
Full Hybrid Learning for Alternating Cohorts To Begin Monday
Dear Parents and Guardians,

We have enjoyed seeing our Padres back on campus! We have safely adjusted to in-person instruction throughout January and we are prepared to move to the full hybrid schedule on Monday. In preparation for this, we are asking students to please review their schedules and classroom locations over the weekend. Some classroom locations will be changing. All changes will be updated by Friday afternoon.

A few additional items to take note of:

Hybrid Schedule through March:
In our full hybrid model, we will be alternating cohorts every other week for all students. In February and March, the Blue Cohort will attend in-person instruction during the weeks of 2/8, 2/22, 3/8, 3/22. The Gold Cohort is scheduled to be on campus during the weeks of 2/16, 3/1 and 3/15.

New Late Work Policy:
Serra’s late work policy has been updated to include the following: Work that is assigned is meant to support student learning. Work that is not turned in within a reasonable time after it is taken out of its original context and thus does not support learning in the way it was intended. As a result, students will not receive credit for missing or unsubmitted assignments that were due in a previous grading period or unit (as defined by the teacher). Exceptions and reasonable adjustments will be appropriate when a student is absent during the final week of a grading period. In all cases, it is the student’s responsibility to stay in communication with their teachers regarding the status of missing assignments.

Scheduling:
Online scheduling for the 2021-2022 school year opens tomorrow, February 4. Parents of current freshmen, sophomores, and juniors should login to the PCR Parent Portal to complete the Course Request Form which will include courses for which your son has previously been approved as well as elective options. The completed form must be emailed to your son’s counselor by March 3. Some courses are restricted to a first-come, first-served basis.

COVID Testing:
We are asking all students who will be attending on campus classes to be tested for COVID every two weeks during the week when the student's cohort is in distance learning. This testing is free and is provided at the San Mateo Event Center. You may also use your own health care provider. Testing should occur on Monday or Tuesday to allow sufficient time for reporting results prior to the week your son will be on campus. Positive test results must be reported via email to [email protected] and when completing the RUVNA app.

Thank you to all our parents and guardians for continuing to adjust to all the new information this week. We are so happy to have our young men on campus and look forward to seeing more faces on Monday.

Sincerely,

Charlie McGrath
Principal

Serra's Mock Trial Team Take Second in Northern Division - Advances to Semi-Finals

For the second time in history, Serra’s Mock Trial Team has advanced to the semi-finals, after coming in second place in the North Division. This is a huge advancement for the club, which boasts 26 members and is led by moderator Dr. Buckels ‘01, theology and philosophy teacher, and Mr. Antony Hoyt '14, who teaches in the English Department.

A final match on Thursday will determine who Serra competes against next week. On Tuesday night, the defense defeated Oceana and the prosecution defeated third-placed South San Francisco.

Serra has won five of the six competitions, with a narrow loss to San Mateo last week, bringing them to second place in the North Division, according to Buckels. Competitions this year are conducted on Zoom.

Mock trial allows students to actively experience the excitement of a courtroom setting, where they work in teams, exchange ideas, set goals, and examine issues. By studying hypothetical cases and preparing strategies and arguments for trial, students also improve their presentation skills. With expert advice from industry professionals such as attorney coach Phaidra Garcia, mother of Zach Garcia '22, the team has had a fantastic season of learning and competing. Congratulations, Mock Trial Padres!
