For the last six years, both incoming first-year students and second-year students at Georgetown School of Medicine have lived the spirit of
cura personalis by planning and running a sports camp for homeless children living in the DC General Family Shelter and plan to continue the tradition this year.

Childhood cancer survivors, Georgetown Lombardi oncologists and representatives from Hyundai Motor America all gathered on a sunny day outside of the Medical-Dental Building to celebrate Jeffrey Toretsky, MD, as the recipient of the $100,000 Hyundai Hope On Wheels award.

Aviad Haramati, PhD, professor of physiology and director of the Center for Innovation and Leadership in Education (CENTILE), received the Edward Patrick Finnerty Lifetime Achievement Award for his sustained commitment to the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE) at their annual meeting in Las Vegas.

Over the past two months, GUMC faculty submitted 125 proposals for extramural sponsored research, totaling over $35 million in direct costs and nearly $46 million in total costs, including the renewal of the cancer center support grant (CCSG) competitive renewal. Thank you to all who contributed, including Melissa Layman, Rory Bennett, John Bustillos, Richard Cecil, Terry-ann Clarke-Nolan, Ryan Dempsey, Brian Fleury, Dana Hunter, Meagan Lancaster, Marla Manalac, Jessica Atlass Roscoe and Doreen Robinson.
Stephanie Detterline, MD, an internal medicine physician at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and the program director of the MedStar Health Internal Medicine Baltimore Residency Program, has been named the Associate Dean for Medical Education (Baltimore) for GUMC. In this role, she will lead medical student clinical education in MedStar Health Baltimore-region hospitals including summer research programs for rising M2 students, traditional M3 clinical experiences and M4 electives.

On June 27, Georgetown law professor David Hyman, MD, JD, testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions on how to reduce health care costs and why health care is so expensive in the United States. He explained some of his suggestions for how to fix the problem, from relying more heavily on first party payments, to using prizes rather than patents to encourage drug innovation.
