2018 SVUSD Classified Employees of the Year
Congratulations to the 2018 SVUSD Classified Employees of the Year! 31 employees were chosen as their school site or division employee of the year, and from this distinguished group, three were chosen as district-wide SVUSD Classified Employees of the Year. All of these individuals exemplify professionalism and consistently go above and beyond to meet the needs of our students, families and staff. A reception was held in their honor on May 17th, and we are proud that they call SVUSD home!

School Information
STEM and the Arts Showcase and Competition
Each year, Vital Link hosts a STEM and Arts Showcase at the Orange County Fairgrounds in conjunction with Imaginology. During the three day event on April 13th-15th, students heard from prominent speakers in the Engineering, Digital Media Arts and Health/Medical fields. The students had the opportunity to visit vendors from the community college Career Technical Education (CTE) programs. SVUSD had over 150 intermediate and high school students attend, who also particpated in an array of competitions, earning the following awards:

University of California, Irvine (UCI) Energy Invitational Design Review
El Toro High School - "Most Innovative"

Several vehicles were built by high school and college students in Orange County. Doug Ford and Casey Moir, teachers from El Toro High School, had a team of six students who built a hybrid vehicle.

VEX Robot OC
Trabuco Hills High School - 1st Place
Los Alisos Intermediate - 2nd Place
A VEX competition for middle and high school students, over 30 teams participated in the event. Teams from Trabuco Hills High School, led by engineering teacher, Phil Ureno , and Los Alisos Intermediate, led by STEM teacher Dan Moreno, placed in the top two spots.

UCI Rescue Robotics Design Review

1st Place, Ground Robot & Aerial Drone
1st Place, Air Assault (Drone)
2nd Place, Ground Assault (Robot)

Teams from middle schools, high schools, and colleges built and programed ground and aerial robots, and drones. The final phase of this competition took place on May 12th, where the teams of robots and drones were identified victims in a simulated outdoor disaster area, and were judged on the number of victims their autonomous robots located. Mission Viejo High school, led by engineering teacher Blaise Miranda , brought home several awards.

Additionally, students from our Digital Media Arts (DMA) classes submitted photographs or graphic arts compositions to be judged for the annual DMA Competition. SVUSD was well represented with four teachers who entered their student's work. Teachers, David Zogg from LHHS , Maria Nadal and Joyanne Goodfellow from ETHS , and Tracey Fanelli from THHS , all had semi-finalists in the competition.
SVUSD Virtual Academy
SVUSD is excited to extend our Virtual Academy to grades 9-12 beginning with the 2018-2019 school year! You are invited to attend the SVUSD Virtual Academy (SVA) Information meeting to meet our teachers (K - 12th grade) and learn more about our vision, our academic programs, and how we blend online learning with face to face learning experiences to offer students in grades kindergarten through high school, a flexible and personalized online learning experience. High school students have additional opportunities to participate in sports at their residence high school while attending the SVUSD Virtual Academy and possibly take one or two classes at their residence school.

Cappie Award Nominees Announced
The Cappie nominees were announced on Friday, May 4th, and SVUSD students garnered 23 nominations. The winners will be announced at the Cappie Gala which will be held on May 20th, at The Grove in Anaheim.

The Cappies is a critics/writing program. Orange County schools have teams of 9 critics that visit other Orange County high schools to watch and review their performing arts plays and musicals. The top writers are published weekly in the OC Register. The critics then nominate, and award, both plays and musicals for the year.

Celebrates 30 Years
Join Trabuco Mesa Elementary families and staff for a night of entertainment, food, and fun as they celebrate their 30th anniversary! The evening entertainment will include guest speakers who will reminisce about the 30 past years of Trabuco Mesa as well as musical performances. An Open House is also scheduled from 6:00 - 6:30 pm.

SVUSD Board of Education Highlights
Several students were recognized at the May 10th SVUSD Board Meeting for their outstanding achievements in the classroom. Two of our AVID (Achievement Via Individual Determination) students were recognized for being named "AVID Senior Standouts" and recipients of scholarships from Knott's Berry Farm.

A group of De Portola Elementary students were also recognized for their participation in the Toshiba ExploraVision contest. Led by teacher, Carol Veravanich, these students comprised four individual teams that particpated in the national science competition, with all four earning Honorable Mention standing.
