Welcome to the Eat Right Be Fit Live Well monthly link roundup.

Each week I read many interesting articles relating to nutrition, fitness and wellness. Here are some of my favorites from the past month. While every article may not be relevant to your personal circumstance, I hope at least one will spark your interest and provide you with a healthy tip you can incorporate into your daily routine.

Best,

Jeannie

July Articles
Depression and Suicide Risk are Side Effects of More Than 200 Common Drugs:   "More than a third of American adults use medications that list depression as a risk, and a quarter use drugs that increase the risk of suicide." Are you taking one or more of the drugs on this list? If so and you're feeling depressed or unhappy, speak to your doctor about changing your meds. Beta blockers for high blood pressure and PPIs for heartburn are two of the most commonly prescribed medications that have these side effects.  (VOX.com)

How Much Drinking Is Healthy -- or Not?   Once again the benefits of drinking are being challenged. The latest studies suggest if you drink, MINIMIZE it - no more than 1-3 drinks per WEEK. One drink is 12oz of beer, 5oz of wine (splash more than 1/2 cup NOT a large wine glass filled to the brim) or 1.5oz of liquor. If you don't drink, there is no reason to start. Buzz kill, I know. But, it's important to realize that the old guidelines of 1 drink a day for women and 2/day for men are outdated. For women with a high risk of breast cancer, I recommend avoiding all alcohol. Ditto for anyone with an increased risk of colon cancer. (Healthday.com)

Healthy Gut, Healthy Heart?  Concerned about heart disease, cancer, and diabetes? Cultivate your gut bacteria by eating fiber rich veggies and whole grains. Limit animal products. (Harvard health)

Seriously, Juice Is Not Healthy:   When it comes to "juicing," you know how I feel. This article supports my belief that it is NOT good for you. Juice, even fresh squeezed, organic and all natural = liquid candy. (NY Times.com)

Do You Really Need Less Sleep As You Age?  People stress about not getting enough sleep. Rightfully so! Consistently getting too few ZZZs can increase your risk for obesity, heart disease, and memory issues. But, how much is enough and how can you tell if you're getting too little. See what the experts have to say. (Time.com)

The EPA Is Hiding Proof That a Widely Used Chemical Causes Leukemia: It's horrifying to me that the EPA isn't interested in protecting us or our environment. (NY Mag.com)

Does Canola Oil Cause Dementia?  Avoiding canola oil because you think it is bad for you? Here's the real story behind the misleading claims. Enjoy organic varieties instead of olive oil when wanting a more neutral tasting oil. (Nutritionaction.com)

How to Be Healthier, Happier and More Productive: It's All in the Timing:  Yes! I can't agree more with this article. Optimize your health, happiness and effectiveness by choosing when during the day you perform certain tasks! (WSJ)
