Soup4SIMPSON
Dear Bellevue Community,
Every year the students at Bellevue High School participate in SOUP4SIMPSON in honor of Bellevue High School Alum, Hunter Simpson. This event consists of a soup line where students donate their lunch money for the day and receive a cup of soup in return.
Unfortunately, this event cannot happen this year. Instead, the SOUP4SIMPSON committee is hosting an online event.
Please donate! All proceeds go directly to New Horizons Teen Homeless Shelter. We will be collecting donations through May 29th. The instructions for donating are included below as well as a link to a video with instructions for donating as well.
In January 2005 in his senior year at Bellevue High, Hunter Simpson was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. He died Dec. 31 at 18 years old after enduring six months of intense radiation and chemotherapy. Although Hunter lived a simple, giving, and short life, he packed it with more generosity than many twice his age. He is described as an old soul driven by his Christian faith, with a heart for social justice for the poor and oppressed. In honor of Hunter, Bellevue High School has held SOUP4SIMPSON for the last 14 years, an event consisting of soup, donations, cookies, high socks, and community SOUP4SIMPSON lunch days give the students at Bellevue High the opportunity to make a little sacrifice to help those in need. The inspiration for this occasion came from Hunter's first and only semester of college. He decided to spend as little money as possible on his meal-plan that semester-so he had a cup of soup for lunch and a cup of soup for dinner every day costing him only $1.50/day. At the end of the semester, he had a $998 credit on his meal plan, which he used to purchase nonperishable food from the college cafeteria. He delivered this food to teenagers at the New Horizons Homeless Shelter for Teens in Seattle.
Last year our event made
$15,556.44
. Overall, we have raised $101,489.44 for New Horizons in the 14 years we have held this event. Hunter was an amazing and empathetic person who led quietly, practiced what he preached, and always thought of others before himself. SOUP4SIMPSON is our opportunity to celebrate his life by coming together as a community and giving to others less fortunate than ourselves. We hope to continue honoring Hunter--living and learning from his example. SOUP4SIMPSON gives us the chance to follow his example and leave the world a little bit better than when we got here.
Thank you for supporting SOUP4SIMPSON and honoring Hunter Simpson.
The Soup4Simpson Committee

AP TESTING UPDATE FROM THE COLLEGE BOARD
Dear Parents of students taking AP Exams:
Many students and parents have contacted me for clarifications on the AP testing process. I'm hoping this short re-cap will help to address some of your questions. As I receive more information from the College Board I will continue to update the school website, https://bsd405.org/bhs/
Student's Testing with Accommodations
: In general students with approved common testing accommodations such as extra time or extra breaks will be allotted additional testing test. The College Board has provided detailed information on testing accommodations at this link https://apcoronavirusupdates.collegeboard.org/coordinators/accommodations. The College Board will update the information at this link the week of April 27th to address World Language exams.
Students with approved testing accommodations who are taking the exams will show the exam location as "Bellevue School District" instead of "Bellevue High School". Note, this location has not been updated by the College Board. The students will take these exams at home and NOT at the district offices.
Delivery of Exams:
Students are receiving correspondence from the College Board to the email address students provided on the profile page of their College Board Account. This will be the email address the exam link will be delivered to. Students should be checking this email account to confirm they are receiving correspondence from the College Board. If they are not receiving information from the College Board students should check clutter etc... and/or change the email address in the profile section of their College Board account. If students have questions on how to update the email address contact me and I can assist, [email protected] In late April the College Board will be sending students and teachers with additional information on how to access the testing system on test day. This will include video demonstrations so families can familiarize themselves with the system. Be sure to watch for this correspondence.
Exam Refunds
: The College Board has requested AP Coordinators to take no action to cancel exams. Exam refunds (full amount that was paid by the student) will be processed after all make up exams - mid June.
What is the Required Action then to initiate a refund? All students who have registered and made payments for exams will receive an exam link. If students do not open the exam link for 1. the Regular Exam AND 2. the Make-up exam, they will be eligible for an exam refund. If students open either exam link this will be considered "taking the exam" and they will not be eligible for an exam refund. I've been informing students requesting exam refunds to ignore the exam link - do not open the exam link on either date.
Feel free to contact me with questions I may have missed.
Thanks!!!

SENIOR SHOUT OUTS
Girls Track and Field
Comments and thoughts shared by Assistant Track & Field Coach, Tom Ellis
To begin I want to give a bit of an overview on this year's girl's javelin group. Coming into this season I thought this was going to be perhaps the strongest overall group of girl throwers that I have had in 20 years at BHS. We had several seniors who had already shown that they were ready to compete at and beyond the league championship level, as well as a good group of underclassmen with experience who also had shown they were ready to compete at a high level.
Nicole Campbell and Rachel Moran -
It is very hard for me to think one of these girls without thinking of the other. Clearly very good friends, they almost always arrived at practice together and left together. Last year I was at the 5th Avenue to see a performance of "Dear Evan Hansen" and while in the lobby spotted Rachel, and when I looked again sure enough there was Nicole!
Both girls have been part of the javelin group since their freshman year, with Nicole following her older brother Gabe into the ranks of the spearchuckers. Both have excellent attitudes and are a joy to coach - except for that foolish business with soccer! Both have shown steady improvement each year, with Nicole qualifying for the Kingco meet as a sophomore and both girls making it to Kingco as juniors. Last year as a junior Nicole had a big breakthrough in her throwing and hit 91-7, showing she was ready to enter the ranks of high-end throwers. I had big hopes for Nicole to be throwing over 100 feet and have a shot at going to the state meet this year, and I think there was a good chance this would have happened. Rachel was a bit behind Nicole in her distances but hit 84' as a junior and also looked like a potential 100 foot thrower.
I have greatly enjoyed working with both Rachel and Nicole and feel cheated that I was not able to spend time with them in their senior season. I hope that they will come back to visit us next year and beyond so that they can catch me up on their lives after high school.
Meghan Weber
- Meghan is a second-year thrower who has shown big-time potential almost from her first practice. She is not only a very talented athlete but also has been a lot of fun to work with, and I had really been looking forward to getting to know her better this year. She is very athletic and also plays volleyball, which caused her to miss a few practices as a junior, but she told me she was going to concentrate on track this spring. Part way into her first season I told Meghan that she showed serious potential, but she didn't really seem to believe me. At the Shoreline Invitational meet last year I was not able to be at the meet due to a work conflict. Meghan had a very good throw in the prelims of 107-5, but because she was a first year thrower she didn't realize that there were finals for the top throwers, and left right after her prelims were finished; which would not have happened if her foolish coach had been there to help her. She did find out until later that not only had her throw qualified her for the finals, but even in her absence from the finals she still finished in 5th place in one of the most competitive meets of the season.
During our early practices this year Meghan showed that she was stronger, and her technique actually looked better than at the end of the previous season. I am quite sure that with a year of experience behind her that Meghan would have made it to the State Meet and had a good chance of finishing on the podium.
Go Bellevue!!! Be well....

SPRING SPORTS SENIORS 2020 - IN THEIR OWN WORDS!!
Hello Bellevue High School & BHS Community....in another effort to honor and celebrate our Senior Student Athletes this Spring, we have reached out to ALL of the individual Seniors and their parents who are participating in Athletics. We are asking that if students themselves would like to have a chance to comment on what being a student athlete means to them, any highlights or memories they'd want to share and any people that they'd want to thank have a chance to do so.
Tyler Smith - Class of 2020, BHS Boys Lacrosse
I've had the privilege of playing lacrosse for the Bellevue Boys Lacrosse Club since I traded in my baseball bat in 6th grade for a lacrosse stick. I didn't know anything about lacrosse, but Pat Hill handed me a D pole during my first ever practice and I never looked back. I learned quickly with great coaching and phenomenal teammates throughout every step of my LAX journey. The brotherhood that comes with the Bellevue Lacrosse program is something special and I will never forget it. I was looking forward to my senior year as a captain and appreciating each practice and game knowing it was going to be the last time I would play with my teammates. This season we missed the Camp Casey experience, our spring break lacrosse trip and formal Friday's - each one of these was something I was looking forward to sharing with the younger players on the team.
I'm grateful to have been a part of the 2018 State Championship team. Beating Mercer Island 8-6 for the State Title was a game I will never forget. Even though our 2019 team last year lost to MI in the championship game, we fought every time we stepped onto the field and I'm proud of what we accomplished. No one expected us to make it to the State Championship game, but we earned it by hard work, determination and playing with heart. With the talent of our senior class I was ready to win back the 2020 State title this year, but I'll leave that for the 2021 team! I want to thank each and every one of my coaches for all of your time and dedication, we appreciate everything you do. You have taught me so much more than the game of lacrosse, and this brotherhood is something that I will cherish forever. #8out (2021 class, you boys have some unfinished business to take care of.)
Gordy Harpster - BHS Class of 2020 - Boys Lacrosse
I have been a part of the Bellevue Lacrosse program since 4th grade and my love for lacrosse has grown with every year. The team comradery: "one team, one town, one family" rang true and many great friendships started as teammates. One of my favorite memories at BHS was winning the Championship game at the Seattle Space Needle Shootout this past winter.
Thank you to my family for the unwavering support and my coaches for the wise words and patience. I was definitely looking forward to a great last high school season. I had my bets on a Championship.
Hundo Lot!
Go Bellevue!!! Be well....

MESSAGE FOR BELLEVUE PARENT COMMUNITY
Hello Bellevue parents!
A group of BSD high school students recently started a petition to make Ecosia, a search engine that plants trees with its revenue, the default search engine across district computers, and the petition has nearly 2,000 signatures! This is a chance to fight climate change, revitalize wildlife habitat, and sustain livelihoods, and if the petition gets enough signatures, BSD might consider making a change. If you're supportive of this project, the students would love if you could sign the petition here and share it with your family and friends.
There are more details about this campaign on the "Campaign info sheet/FAQ" that is linked on the petition page. The students would also love to hear your thoughts and questions about this project; feel free to email [email protected].
If you're looking for more ways to help out with this project, the students would really appreciate donations to the "Ecosia fund," which is a community-sourced fund that supports tree-planting efforts and helps get the word out about this campaign. More details about how to donate are in the petition form and the campaign info sheet.
You can also set Ecosia as your own personal default search engine by going to Chrome settings, then 'Search engine,' then 'Manage search engines.'
Stay safe, healthy, and green! "
