March 15th Online Service: The Wisdom of the Heart
Rev. Marcus Hartlief
The Dalai Lama imagined a "a map of our emotions to develop a calm mind," and in 2014 asked a father-daughter team of emotion scholars to develop an Atlas of Emotions. As the role of emotion has taken a more prominent place in our understanding of humanity, and emotional intelligence or EQ has become a buzzword in business and beyond, how do we understand the role of feelings in the work of Joy and Justice?

"Dear Ones,
I alw
ays get a warm feeling when someone says the part of our mission, "to share life's journey." It is reassuring to know we are not alone on the journey, that we travel with companions who share our values, people who will know and care about the shape of our lives. But of course, sharing life's journey is not always warm and fuzzy. Right now, we are all sharing a journey that involves a great deal of uncertainty as we navigate how to respond to COVID-19 and the public health issue facing our community. While the uncertainties of the situation and the dangers of this virus can cause our monkey minds to swing wildly, I do find solace in remembering this is a journey we share not only with our community here, but with people all over the planet. We are not alone.."

This Week in Religious Education
|
Our congregational theme for March explores how to be a people of wisdom, and we hope to bring families videos and other materials for kids and youth that we hope will inspire them in ways of wisdom. Please look for emails from me about materials to engage kids with, especially if they are staying home from school.
I am also reaching out to parents with questions regarding parenting and wisdom. My suggestion is to p
ick the one or two that speak to you the most, using them as bite-sized opportunities to dive deeper into the role of parent, partner, and person of spirit and conscience and discuss them with a parenting partner or good friend.
● What role does intuition play in your parenting?
● Have you learned more in your parenting from calm introspection, listening to wise ones or surviving one of life's storms?
● What was the wisest decision/choice you made as a new parent?
● What is the wisest thing you've watched your parenting partner do or heard them say?
● It's been said, "Nothing ever goes away until it has taught us what we need to know." Which of your problems, messes, mistakes or pieces of pain in your parenting just never seems to go away?
● What one piece of advice on parenting do you wish you hadn't ignored?
● What has been the most unlikely source of parenting wisdom in your life?
● What has your child--as an individual--taught you about life?
These questions come from the "Spiritual Snacks to Share" section in a "Soulful Home." If you are interested in other activities for the "Soulful Home" materials, or links to videos we will be posting for kids, please email me at Revlynne@uumarin.org.
