Ferguson back on his feet with UW_s help
FERGUSON BACK ON HIS FEET
A rescued miniature donkey has gone from sad to sassy and is walking again after UW Veterinary Care amputated his deformed front left hoof and a prosthetist fitted him with an artificial limb -- the first-ever amputation with a prosthesis at our Morrie Waud Large Animal Hospital. Ferguson is now thriving at Holyland Donkey Haven near Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, eating up all the grass and attention that his little heart desires.

COOL TREAT FOR HOT DOGS
The dog days of summer can be hard on our canine companions. Sandi Sawchuk, primary care veterinarian at UW Veterinary Care, has just the recipe for a cooling treat: make homemade "pupsicles" by mixing peanut butter, fat-free plain yogurt and a mashed banana. Freeze the mixture in a small paper cup, using a dog biscuit as the stick, then peel away the cup and serve. See more tips to keep dogs comfortable through the season's most sultry days.

STUDY OF CRUCIATE RUPTURE
A study seeking to identify genetic mutations associated with non-contact cranial cruciate rupture in dogs and develop a genetic test for this condition seeks Labrador Retrievers and Rottweilers who (1) have knee problems due to a torn cruciate ligament or (2) are over 8 years of age. Participants receive a free orthopedic exam from a board-certified surgeon and an X-ray assessment of both knees. A blood sample will also be collected for DNA analysis.

UW Veterinary Care Farrier Service
This past week marked National Farriers Week, celebrating the dedication and craft of those who specialize in equine hoof care. As part of our commitment to delivering specialized care to equine patients, the Morrie Waud Large Animal Hospital is proud to provide farrier services by Dean Johanningmeier and Martin Roche.

Services provided include routine trimming and shoeing, as well as corrective shoeing and podiatry for referral patients. When patients require a more comprehensive care plan, a compassionate team approach with our equine veterinary surgeons, sports medicine and rehabilitation veterinarian, and lameness specialists allows for diagnostics and therapeutic shoeing to all take place in one convenient visit.
