Board places renewed emphasis on cultural resolutions
|
Almost 25 years ago, Parwinder Johal became the first Sikh teacher hired by the Milpitas Unified School District. Today, Johal serves as the District’s Coordinator for Literacy / Intervention / English Learners.
It was only fitting at the November 26, 2019 Board of Education meeting that Johal proudly read into record the district’s Resolution 2020.20 “Recognizing and Honoring November as California Sikh American Awareness and Appreciation Month.”
Johal helped revise the resolution, giving it a deeper meaning by adding phrases such as “the word ‘Sikh’ means ‘Seeker of truth’”; “Sikhism was founded 500 years ago when a man named Nanak walked the South Asian subcontinent,” and “Sikh values are American values, Sikh community fosters love, equality, and acceptance of all.”

Beloved custodian Robert Cease honored as #WEareMUSD Champions Award Winner
|
|
Custodian Robert Cease was an honored guest at the Nov. 26 meeting, receiving well-deserved recognition as the #WEareMUSDChampions Classified Employees Award Winner for the month of November.
“Mr. Cease has built many relationships with students, with staff, with parents, and with community. He takes pride in making sure that our campus is well taken care of,” said Superintendent Cheryl Jordan of the beloved custodian. “He’s really a big part of our family.”
Cease, who has been with MUSD for more than a decade, announced his plans for retirement later at the end of December.
“The same professionalism that Robert has shown in his job‑-in the job that he does for the building every day--parallels the same love and respect he shares about his family,” added Adult Education Principal Giuliana Brahim.

Student newspaper chief brings journalistic passion to Board Room

Neval Mulaomerovic, the Editor in Chief of Milpitas High School’s student newspaper ‘The Union,’ was a special guest of the Board at the November 26 meeting.
“As Editor in Chief, I’m responsible for every detail that goes into our school newspaper, including story boards, budgeting and layout, which is released once every six weeks,” said Mulaomerovic, explaining that the newspaper is entirely student run. “Each student has an important role and our advisor, Mr. (Jeff) Colburn, serves solely as a supervisor providing advice and guidance when necessary.”
The Union
provides student viewpoints on relevant issues, Mulaomerovic noted, from MHS personnel changes to the passing of last year’s Measure AA Bond to student homelessness and drug use on campus.
Staff goals this year include raising additional funds to add more color pages to print edition, expand the website, and improve communications with Board Members for input on articles. The paper sells advertising space to local businesses and organizations.

Weller School touts top attendance numbers

In her Nov. 26 presentation to the Board, Weller Elementary School Principal Alicia Padilla highlighted her staff’s focus on student attendance as well as providing equitable outcomes for students and building critical thinkers among the student body.
“We want students to be at school and we want them to be at school every day,” said Padilla, detailing the 98 percent weekly attendance goal that students have been accomplishing throughout the 2019-20 school term.
The Vision for the “Leader in Me” School, located at 345 Boulder Street, is to develop students who are motivated, innovative and collaborative leaders who are determined to persevere, become self-directed learners, and successful citizens.

Board re-evaluates its best practices with revised, newly proposed bylaws
|
|
The Board approved two revised Board policies, as well as heard a first reading of a third policy, to add more accountability to the governing body.
In another follow-up--this one to a Community Input Meeting--the Board reviewed two possible options for
Video Recordings of School Board Meetings. Board directed staff to pilot the low-cost video format for online board meeting access, first one will be at the December 10 meeting. The video archive will be accessible on the District website the Wednesday following the meeting.
