National cow genomics project aims to uncover key genetic traits
The U.S. cattle industry generated more than $100 billion in farm cash receipts in 2016, representing the largest agricultural sector. Despite cattle's economic importance, scientists still have a long way to go to fully understand mechanisms that govern important genetic traits in the animals, such as growth and disease resistance, according to an announcement from the University of California-Davis (UC-Davis).

House passes farm bill in second attempt
On Thursday, the House was able to advance its farm bill that failed on May 18, securing additional Republican votes after the chamber considered immigration bills that had held the farm bill hostage the first time around.
The bill approved was in the same form as the one brought up in May, which was unable to secure support from Democrats because it limited food assistance for able-bodied adults. In May the vote failed 198-213. The June 21 vote was close again -- at 213-211 -- but House Agriculture Committee chairman Mike Conaway (R., Texas) was able to round up the Republican votes needed.

Agricultural fix left out of House immigration bill
After months of negotiating, the House took up two immigration bills on June 21. However, the proposals on the floor were unable to offer a solution on year-round agricultural labor needs.
One of two immigration bills, called the McCaul-Goodlatte bill, failed on the House floor Thursday. This bill (H.R. 4760) included the Agricultural Guestworker Act (AG Act), which replaced the current H-2A program with a year-round agricultural guestworker program.
