Very Special Arts Intersections Conference 2018
The annual conference sponsored by the Kennedy Center took place in Atlanta August 6 - 8. VSA was created in 1974 by Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith in honor of her sister Rosemary Kennedy. Teaching artists, arts administrators and disAbility activists and performers from around the world came together to share knowledge and their passion for the arts. CADA founder, Wendy S Duke gave a workshop-presentation on the use of listicles as improv scene starters for transitioning youth and young adults.

There were many outstanding workshops presented over the course of the conference, including a master class given by Dancing Wheels from Cleveland, OH. It was fascinating to see that these chairs have an extra wheel at the back to help with spins, The large wheels can pop off, giving the dancers the ability to move sideways. For people who don't have custom chairs, there are techniques for doing a grapevine kind of move, as well as ways that partners can find ways to move face to face and from the side, rather than simply push from behind.

Another workshop jam-packed with useful theatre techniques for people with disabilities was given by Fran Sillau. Fran is a teaching artist, actor, writer, and director. He is a creative thinker who shared some innovative solutions for working with folks of all abilities. Pantomime and improvisation are important tools that can be adapted for use with people of all abilities. Fran uses "structured improv" to take the pressure off making an instant choice. For many of our actors, "instant" is a difficult challenge. Fran suggested providing a few choices so that actors are not overwhelmed.
Theatre on the Spectrum Adult Company News
Company members are hard at work developing a new show for the fall. Working with a theme of children's television shows, the actors are researching tv shows from the 50s through the present and using improvisation to develop ideas that are then turned into a script. Look for some performance dates in our studio in October. We will also be continuing to tour to outside groups -- call us at 234-678-7830 for booking information.

Recently, some of our company members attended a performance of Bye Bye Birdie at Weathervane Playhouse. After the show, the cast was available for autographs and pictures. We were delighted by the production and by the opportunity to meet the actors! Thank you Weathervane Playhouse and Melanie Pepe for helping to make this outing possible!
Meet Our Saturday Co-Stars!
Every CADA class is taught by two co-teachers. This gives us the ability to have one teacher lead the class while the other observes, takes notes and jumps in when needed. Another unique feature of our drama classes for youth on the spectrum is the presence of one or more "Co-Stars." These are student volunteers who are trained in drama (most of them trained at Miller South School for the Arts in Akron) and who take the classes along with our students. They model the games and exercises for our students, and more importantly are able to connect with and support all our students. Many of our co-stars are on the spectrum themselves and have taken and continue to take our classes.

Our Co-Stars are all members of Theatre on the Spectrum's Youth Company and are hard at work on our next production, which is an original devised piece on the history of disability in our community. Inspired by the work of University of Akron students and staff uncovering the history of Akron's Poor House and its burial ground at Schneider Park in Akron, this piece examines how societies have treated their dis/Abled citizens over the course of time. Look for this piece to be ready for audience in 2019.
