Every CADA class is taught by two co-teachers. This gives us the ability to have one teacher lead the class while the other observes, takes notes and jumps in when needed. Another unique feature of our drama classes for youth on the spectrum is the presence of one or more "Co-Stars." These are student volunteers who are trained in drama (most of them trained at Miller South School for the Arts in Akron) and who take the classes along with our students. They model the games and exercises for our students, and more importantly are able to connect with and support all our students. Many of our co-stars are on the spectrum themselves and have taken and continue to take our classes.
Our Co-Stars are all members of Theatre on the Spectrum's Youth Company and are hard at work on our next production, which is an original devised piece on the history of disability in our community. Inspired by the work of University of Akron students and staff uncovering the history of Akron's Poor House and its burial ground at Schneider Park in Akron, this piece examines how societies have treated their dis/Abled citizens over the course of time. Look for this piece to be ready for audience in 2019.
