A Message from the Principal

Lovejoy HS News 05 21 18

P arents and Guardians,

Ready or not, summer is coming quickly. As difficult as it is to believe, today is the last "Monday" for our students in the 2017-18 school year. I truly hope it has been a great school year for you and your student, and that you both enjoy the upcoming summer.

This week, we will host our grade level assemblies for underclassmen. 9th grade will take place Tuesday, 10th grade is on Wednesday, and 11th grade will be Thursday. All assemblies will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the LHS Auditorium. If you are planning on attending, please park in the front of the school and enter through the main entrance. Individual parking spaces in the back of the school are numbered and students have purchased a reserved space. Letters were mailed to parents whose students are receiving an award.

We also invite you to attend our annual Senior Signing Day this Friday, May 25th in the LHS Main Gym. This is a fun event with scholarship selections, college announcements, military recognitions, and an opportunity to celebrate our graduates. The program will begin promptly at 2:30PM and we hope you can join us.

Below you will find more details about upcoming events and opportunities. Please take a few minutes to read through them to ensure you have all the information that applies to you and your student. Have a great week.

Sincerely,

Chris Mayfield
Principal
Lovejoy High School

Bone Marrow Screening - TOMORROW
On Tuesday, May 22nd, Lovejoy will be hosting a Bone Marrow Screening from 7:00-8:45 am & 4:15-6:30 pm in the LHS Commons to help fight blood cancer.

There are 14,000 people currently searching for matching donors. YOU could be the lifesaving hero someone is looking for. It only takes a few minutes and the swab of a cheek to register as a potential bone marrow or blood stem cell donor.

Actual bone marrow transplants have come a long way and now is almost like giving blood in most cases.

Marrow donors must be 18-55 years in age.

If you have time, we would love for you to come down to the commons to get swabbed on May 22nd before or after school. Please consider inviting a friend or a family member who is eligible to donate.

Thanks for your consideration and go to dkms.org for more information.

Medications at School
If your child has medicine at school, please make sure your child has exactly enough medicine to finish the school year. You are responsible for picking up any extra medicine as the school district has a policy against sending medicines home with students. At the end of this school year, any remaining medicines, including inhalers, will be thrown out. The school cannot store these for you during the summer.

Please remember, if your child is going to continue being medicated at school during the 2018-2019 school year, you will need to complete a new medication sheet at that time and bring a SMALL or travel size bottle of medicine that is not expired.

AP Studio Art Exhibit
Because our AP Studio program continues to grow (and the scale of some of the students' work has drastically increased in size), this year's AP Studio Exhibition is being split into two separate events:

AP Studio 3D Exhibition
LHS Gallery
Thurs. May 24th from 6 - 9 p.m.

LHS Visual Art Show - May 26th
You are invited to attend the 9th Annual LJVA AP Studio Art Exhibit in Fairview Town Center, May 26th from 5:00 - 9:00 PM. This exhibition is a celebration of the personal bodies of work created by Lovejoy High School AP 2D and AP Drawing students. The work created by these artists is thoughtful, expansive, and far beyond conventional. Please note: the Advanced Placement Art courses are intended to prepare students at the collegiate level of performance and some artwork may contain mature themes. Please come by to experience this one-night opening and congratulate the artists on a phenomenal year of work.

We hope you can make it to both of these shows.

Students to Embark on a Mission Trip
Olivia Bullock, Hannah Karst, and Health Science teacher Mrs. Barnett are traveling to Faridabad, India on a Medical Volunteer Project in late June for 2 weeks. They will be  providing healthcare where it is unavailable, joining forces with PMGY (Plan My Gap Year) to make this volunteer opportunity possible, and will be alongside local doctors providing healthcare in the hospitals and clinics throughout Faridabad. Their mission is to "reach the unreached" and "touch the untouched"(Mark 16:15). They hope to make a difference and impact as many lives as possible. If you're interested in supporting their experience of a life time, click here to connect to their GoFundMe page. Any extra fundraising will be donated to Healthy Hearts 101 Foundation @ St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Plymouth, Michigan. This foundation is very important to Olivia because the founding surgeon, Dr. Manak Sood, saved her grandmother's life. She had a 2% chance of survival, but thanks to Dr. Sood, she is thriving 14 years later!

Important News from Student Nutrition
Regarding Change in Student Meal Accounts
In an effort to help minimize negative balances at the end of the school year, beginning Monday, May 14th, and for the remainder of the school year, students will no longer be able to charge meals which result in the student incurring a negative meal account balance. Students may continue to use their lunch accounts as long as they have a positive meal account balance. Households with students who currently have negative balances will receive reminder emails and phone calls. Federal regulations prohibit us from rolling over negative balances to the next school year. Please arrange to remit payment for any negative lunch accounts your child may have incurred.

All positive balances will be rolled over to next school year. If you have a graduating senior, funds may be transferred to any sibling in the school district. To request a meal account refund, please complete a refund request form, located on the Student Nutrition website . For assistance, please contact us at 469-742-8041 .

The Department of Student Nutrition Services thanks you for your understanding and for allowing us to serve your student(s) this school year.

Student Recognition

The Red Ledger
Senior newspaper staffer Katie Felton was selected for a "Best of Best of SNO Award" for her article "Surviving the Storm," documenting the stories of a Houston-area resident and Lucas firefighters and their experiences with the tragedy of Hurricane Harvey.  School Newspapers Online (SNO) provides hosting for a large number of high school and college online newspapers. Students can submit their work for a national edition, known as Best of SNO . Katie's story was selected as a part of a feature called Assignment Desk focused on Hurricane coverage . Last week, her story won the award for "Best Hurricane Coverage" in SNO's end-of-the-year recognition.

Katie's story was also honored earlier this month by the Interscholastic League Press Conference at the state journalism convention in Austin as Tops In Texas for news writing, making it the best online news story in the state for 2017-18. Her story along with the six other Tops in Texas winners from The Red Ledger will be published in a booklet to be distributed statewide to high school journalism programs next year.

Congressional Youth Advisory Council (CYAC)
Freshman Meghan Spencer has been a member of Congressman Sam Johnson's Congressional Youth Advisory Council. Only 50 students were chosen out of hundreds of applicants, and Meghan is only one of five freshman.
