JAC's Cheryl Teverow delivered JAC support to
Rep. David Cicilline (RI-1)
Former JAC president Betsy Sheerr with Rep. Joe Kennedy (MA-4) and Madeleine Dean, Congressional candidate for PA-4.
Judge Brett Kavanaugh represents a clear and present danger to our lives if the Senate confirms his Supreme Court nomination. He will further swing the court to the right and jeopardize abortion rights, health insurance for millions, same sex marriage, voting rights and affirmative action.

There have been significant court rulings on these issues over the years. Many were 5-4 decisions. Now, with Justice Anthony Kennedy's retirement, the next justice could be the deciding vote against cases dealing with these critical issues.

The anti-choice movement's strategy has been to pass extreme, restrictive bills in state legislatures. By pushing the legal limits, they hope these cases will be litigated and make their way to the Supreme Court. With Kavanaugh instead of Kennedy, who ruled in favor of Roe v Wade, the courts will be much more hostile to reproductive freedom.

It is possible that the court would rule in favor of a 20-week abortion or a ban after a heartbeat is detected. Chipping away at Roe, outright reversal will be more plausible.

Kavanaugh has already proved himself to be hostile to abortion. He ruled against allowing an undocumented teen access to abortion, which was her legal right. He has also ruled in favor of allowing employers to deny access to birth control under the guise of "religious freedom."

Roe v Wade has been the law of the land for the past 40 years, but there is no guarantee it will last forever. President Trump has made it his crusade to make abortion illegal.

We can't lose this fight and push women back to dark allies for abortion care.

TAKE ACTION

Call the Senate TODAY
Tell them to vote NO on any nominee who opposes Roe v Wade and the right to safe, legal abortion.
202.224.3121
________________________

President Trump campaigned on the promise to nominate anti-choice justices to the Supreme Court, and now is his chance. He holds the balance of the Court in his hands.
  • The courts are our last line of defense
  • The Supreme Court is the ultimate backstop against policies that restrict reproductive rights
  • Trump has promised to overturn Roe v Wade and HE COULD DO IT
  • Marriage equality and much more are also at risk
Senators MUST vote for judicial nominees who protect reproductive rights, not attack them. Tell your Senators to vote NO on any nominee who will not protect our rights.

Then tweet to Senator McConnell:

@SenateMajLdr Follow your own rule: No #SCOTUS nominees in an election year. "The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court justice." #SenateTradition

Trump Taps Obama Mideast Peace Envoy for Top State Department Post

David Hale, currently the U.S. ambassador to Pakistan, was tapped to serve as an under secretary of state for political affairs, the White House said in a statement. Hale is a career member of the foreign service corps and has held multiple positions in government, including, at different points in time, as U.S. ambassador to Lebanon and Jordan.
How Israel and Egypt Are Coordinating on Gaza

The Hamas delegation that visited Cairo on July 11 - led by the deputy head of the organization's political wing, Saleh al-Arouri - faces a difficult decision. Unless it can prove its sincere willingness to advance the reconciliation process with the Fatah movement, Egypt will shut down the Rafah crossing - Gaza's only passage to the outside world apart from the crossings into Israel.
Israeli Ambassador Urges Top UN Environmental Advocate to Condemn Hamas Arson Attacks

"For over one hundred days, Hamas terrorists...have used arson kites and other aerial delivery means to set almost 700 fires that have torched thousands of acres, including over 1,500 acres of agricultural fields in Israel," Danon wrote in a letter to the deputy secretary-general of the UN, Amina Mohammed. "This is a new face of terrorism directly targets the Israeli ecosystem and has caused over $2 million in damages."
ANTI-SEMITISM & BDS
Self-Described Nazis and White Supremacists Are Running as Republicans Across the Country

In at least five state and national races across the country, the Republican Party is dealing with an uncomfortable problem. Their party's candidates are either a card-carrying Nazi, a Holocaust denier, a proud white supremacist, or all of the above.
South Carolina First State to Adopt Uniform Definition of Antisemitism

Under the measure, universities must take the definition into account when reviewing charges of discrimination or bias. Efforts earlier this year to pass a permanent version of the law were frustrated when concerns about an impingement on free speech hindered its advance in the Senate.
CHOICE
Within Months, "Just About Any Abortion Case" Could End Women's Right to Choose

In the weeks since Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement from the Supreme Court, Americans who support abortion rights have sounded the alarm about the dire consequences if Trump's nominee, Judge Brett Kavanaugh, joins the court. The lawyer who saved abortion rights in 1992 says the coming fight will be a "political movement as much as a legal one."
Opposition to Breast-Feeding Resolution by U.S. Stuns World Health Officials

A resolution to encourage breast-feeding was expected to be approved quickly and easily by the hundreds of government delegates who gathered this spring in Geneva for the United Nations-affiliated World Health Assembly. Based on decades of research, the resolution says that mother's milk is healthiest for children and countries should strive to limit the inaccurate or misleading marketing of breast milk substitutes. Then the United States delegation, embracing the interests of infant formula manufacturers, upended the deliberations.
Trump's Family Planning Dystopia

In June, the Trump administration published a proposed change in regulations governing the federal family planning program, Title X of the Public Health Service Act. Title X funds breast and cervical cancer screenings, sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing, and evidence-based, affordable birth control. Established nearly 50 years, Title X serves 4 million people who are overwhelmingly low-income. One-third of beneficiaries are people of color.

SEPARATION
The White House Is Tearing down the Wall Between Church and State

Attacks on the wall of separation established by the founders - which the religious right likes to call "a lie of the left" - are nothing new. What has changed under Mr. Trump is the disproportionate political debt he owes to extreme religious conservatives, whose views on church-state issues - ranging from the importance of secular public education to women's and gay rights - are far removed from the American mainstream.
When Politicians Determine Your Religious Beliefs

It's not just that our religious beliefs affect our politics - it's that our politics affect our religious choices. We don't just take cues about politics from our pastors and priests; we take cues about religion from our politicians.  To see this, consider that as recently as the 1970s, white Republicans were no more religious than white Democrats. Today they are nearly 20 percent more likely to go to church regularly and likewise about 20 percent more likely to believe in God.

Millions from Anonymous Donors to Influence Kavanaugh Fight

Even before Trump's announcement Monday that he had picked Brett Kavanaugh, a federal appeals court judge, advocacy groups had begun lining up for and against the nomination and said they would spend heavily to influence the outcome of what's expected to be a tumultuous confirmation process. One of the most prominent groups on the right, the Judicial Crisis Network, said it's prepared to spend as much as $10 million or more in a pro-Kavanaugh advertising campaign that includes targeting vulnerable Senate Democrats.
Brett Kavanaugh on the Issues: Abortion, Guns, Climate and More

Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh, President Trump's nominee for the Supreme Court, has spent the past dozen years embracing the philosophy of the conservative legal movement as he assembled a record on the powerful federal Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Here are some of the notable issues and cases he has addressed. Many of them arose from disputes over the scope and limits of the power of the federal government.
Supreme Court Nominee Brett Kavanaugh Lauded Late Chief Justice Rehnquist for Dissenting in Roe vs. Wade and Supporting School Prayer

Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh, President Trump's Supreme Court nominee, gave a revealing speech last fall in which he lauded former Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist for having dissented in Roe vs. Wade and for rejecting the notion of "a wall of separation between church and state."
POLITICAL BYTE
Baldwin Wants Democrats to Know She Could Lose

Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) is telling anyone who listens that she could lose her election. She doesn't want her party's machine to take her race for granted. Campaign Pro's James Arkin, from Portage, Wis.: "It's an unusual message for any candidate, but the liberal Democrat from Wisconsin is sounding the alarm after Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer effectively declared the first-term senator a favorite to keep her seat in November by leaving her off their lists of top-tier Senate races. After their pronouncements, major outside groups in both parties skipped Wisconsin in their initial $120 million of spending planned for this fall - triggering fears among state Democrats that the party will take victory for granted.
The Dark Money Behind Campus Speech Wars

In May, a new nonprofit group called Speech First sued the University of Michigan in federal court over its speech code, which it claims has a "chilling effect" on young Trump supporters. Speech First wants the university to ban any investigation into campus harassment, bullying, and "bias-related misconduct." It argues that these terms are defined so broadly that they restrict the free speech of campus conservatives. The university's speech code, the group contends, belongs in "communist China." It is also has ties to the Koch brothers.
Senate Confirms Lawyer for Russian Bank to Head DOJ Corruption Division

The Senate voted to confirm President Donald Trump's nominee to lead the Justice Department's oversight of criminal cases involving public corruption. The choice was arguably a strange one. Brian Benczkowski, a lawyer with no experience as a federal prosecutor, whose last job involved representing a Russian bank closely tied to the regime of Vladimir Putin, was confirmed by a 51-48 vote. Every Democratic senator except Joe Manchin (D-WV) voted against him.
Rod Rosenstein Announces Russian Indictments

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has announced indictments against 12 Russian intelligence officials in connection with the hacking of the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign. The charges - the latest batch of indictments in special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing investigation into Russian election interference - come days before President Donald Trump is expected to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

A Stone for Claude Lanzmann

On July 5th, as I was leaving Treblinka, one of the six death camps that Nazi Germany built in Poland to murder Europe's Jews, I learned that the man who most seared in the public mind the true memory of that cruelest engine of death had just died. Many of the stones in Treblinka's memorial of hundreds of stones are marked with the names of whole cities and towns, such as Warsaw, whose Jews, about 900,000 in all, were gassed there. Now another should be placed at Treblinka for Claude Lanzmann, the greatest guardian of Treblinka's memory.
Israel Plans Mission to the Moon Using Smallest Spacecraft to Ever Make the Journey
