What a fantastic evening we had last night!  If you missed it, we are referring to our annual  Evening of Art and Music. The gymnasium was filled with beautiful artwork and music.  Thank you to all the parents and grandparents who were able to attend.  Your support is greatly appreciated.  Look for information farther down in this newsletter with a link to additional photos.

Progress reports for grades 1-7 went home today. This is a tough time of the year for our students to stay focused and a reminder from home wouldn't hurt. Summer vacation is just a little more than 3 weeks away so let's finish the year off on a positive note.

On the lighter side, Ch. 40 - Western Mass News was here this week and filmed several morning "shout-outs" with the students.  Look for them to be included in the next few months during the 6-7 a.m. newscast.  If we receive definite days and time, we will share them with you. As always, our students did a great job representing our school and made me proud.

I hope everyone enjoys a nice weekend.

Peace,

Ann E. Dougal
Principal

Hanging Up Our Third Grade Memories

With less than a month of school left, we have begun to discuss all of the adventures the third grade class has gone on!

Our year included the Walk-a-thon, drumming, the students leading their first Mass, learning multiplication and division, cursive writing, field trips, and many more activities. When asked what their favorite memories were, there was a variety of answers. By popular vote, the one that topped them all was the Walk-a-thon. When asked why it was their favorite memory, their answers included, "it was the first year they could run; they enjoyed being outside; and they could talk with their friends."

Mrs. Morrill and I saved our favorite memories for last: Geometry and "Charlotte's Web". For geometry, the students learned about angles, polygons, triangles, quadrilaterals, and solid shapes. We made shape monsters out of different shapes and also went on a walk outside to find solid shapes around the school. The students were thrilled to read a chapter book as a class instead of our usual stories from our Journeys books. We did many activities including drawing their favorite scenes, coloring a pig each time a chapter was read, and learning vocabulary for every chapter. To celebrate ending the book, we watched "Charlotte's Web" and compared the book with the movie.

We cannot believe how fast this year has gone by!

 Evening of Art and Music

So Impressive!

Our annual Evening of Art and Music was held last night and the gymnasium was filled with talent!

The first portion of the evening was dedicated to music with solo and group performances filling the air with a variety of melodies from Georgia to New York, New York to  Route 66 The 7th grade students even wrote a few of the songs themselves! The music portion of the evening finished up with a very touching version of Fix You by Coldplay and highlighted the graduating 8th grade students.

The art displays featured an abundance of talent utilizing a variety of mediums.  The sculptures were amazing as students used their imaginations to create something meaningful to them. The paint, pastel and pencil artwork showed outstanding talent in even some of our youngest students. There were exotic guitars and human caricatures and much, much more!

A special thank you to Mrs. Alves in the Art Room and Mrs. Duplessis in the Music Room.

It's All About Mass

The Boston Science Museum was back again this week for our 7th grade students.  The experiments had to do with mass and how different things affect how mass travels.

 Retreat News

Our Statue Looks Awesome!

We send a great big THANK YOU to Chrissy Rodriguez Curtis who spent two days with us this week repairing and painting our statue of Jesus in the lobby.

Chrissy is a graduate from one of our heritage schools, Holy Cross, Class of 2007.  She went on to receive her Bachelor of Science from Harvard University and received her Master of Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina.  Chrissy recently received the prestigious 2018 Master Craftsman Award from the United States Institute of Theater Technology.  This award is given to one graduate student from across the country who excels in one of the five areas of theater production.

Congratulations Chrissy and thank you for sharing your talents with St. Michael's Academy!  Our statue has been transformed and is beautiful!

 Field Trips

Grade 4 Visits Storrowton Village

The 4th grade students had a fun and educational trip to Storrowton Village today.  They were able to step back in time and experience what their life would have been like many years ago!

PreK - 4B

Washing Our Hands in PreK-4B

We send our thanks to Mrs. Johnson, a nurse at Baystate Medical Center, who brought in a "Glitterbug" machine which has a black light and shows how effectively you are washing your hands.  Ms. Synan's students were very surprised to see what germs remained on their hands even after washing.

Better wash those hands well and often!
