It's summer and the warm weather is here ... that means that The Angel Fund events continue!

We are grateful to all who come out to support our events (see upcoming events below) and to those who have donated and/or volunteered. With your help, we have been able to raise millions of dollars for ALS research.

Your generous donations and support have enabled us to provide Dr. Robert Brown and his research team with $1 million in just over a year - with more funding on the way. (See our research update below.)

We are proud to say that of the funds expended, The Angel Fund gives an average of 92% to research.

We are reminded of what we have accomplished together as members of The Angel Fund family, which has grown from a single "seed of hope" into thousands of emissaries like you who carry The Angel Fund torch every day.

We still have a way to go and need your support to keep us moving forward with clinical trials. The research is promising and we will continue until treatment and a cure is found.

Together, we will make hope a reality!

The 17th Annual Walk of Hope will be held in Wakefield on Saturday, September 8th.

Gather family and friends and walk for those who no longer can.

ANNUAL GALA
October 27th
The Annual Gala and Silent Auction will take place on Saturday, October 27th at the Cafe Escadrille in Burlington, MA.

The theme this year will be a masquerade event. More details will follow soon.

The Angel Fund donated $1million to Dr. Brown and his research team in just a little over one year.

Research Update -
Towards New Treatments for ALS

Dr. Robert H. Brown, Jr.
I am pleased to provide an update on our ALS clinical trial activity, which has been so generously supported through by the Angel Fund. The focus has been on a new and innovative program to use gene therapy in treating a particular form of hereditary ALS associated with the mutant SOD1 gene. More recently, we now have developed a different – but similar – modality for treating ALS associated with the mutant C9 gene.  With over 40 identified genes associated with ALS, the SOD1 and C9 forms together represent approximately 65% of all genetic ALS. 
 
As you may know, last summer we treated a single ALS patient on a compassionate use basis using a new gene therapy approach aimed at silencing the SOD1 gene, from which we have learned a great deal. The results from that first patient have now embolden us to treat a second patient, also on a compassionate use basis, which we hope will happen soon. 
 
The first patient was treated at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester; this second patient will be treated in Boston at Mass General Hospital under the care of my longtime collaborator, Dr. Merit Cudkowicz. We have evolved the protocol for the second patient based on what we learned from the first, providing us with high hopes and expectations for further success. If we do see strong progress with the second patient, that hopefully will trigger a plan to launch an expanded access, Phase I trial that will treat approximately 10 additional patients.

Boston Marathon
Thank you to Matt Bergin, Meghan Osterlind, Russell Becker, Erin Butcher and Mike Myers - Team ALS.

We were so proud to have five Boston Marathoners on our 2018 team this year. It was an amazing feat to train and then run 26.2 miles on a cold rainy day! We are grateful to have had them create awareness and raise funds to help us find a cure.
Casino Night at Subaru of Wakefield
The Casino Night was a great success and a fun night for all!

Thanks to Sal Barbagallo and Subaru of Wakefield for hosting our event and to all who came out to help us raise funds for ALS research.

Special thank you to Run Johnny Run for donating their musical talents to the event.

Harpoon 5 Miler
Many of our supporters joined 5,000 other runners at the Harpoon 5 Miler. This year alone, Harpoon Brewery will be donating $245,000 to ALS research - bringing their total to more than $1.5 Million for ALS Research!

Team Michael was the top team, raising over $25,000 and Patrick Daly was the top individual fundraising runner, raising over $5,000.

10th Annual Gunnery Race to Cure ALS
Long time supporters Seth and Ann Low recently held their 10th Annual Gunnery Race to Cure ALS in CT.

Squirrel Run XXI
The Kennedy family held the 21st Annual Jimmy Kennedy Memorial Race to Cure ALS in June.
The race is held in memory of Jimmy "Squirrel" Kennedy who lost his battle to ALS at the age of 31.

Hundreds of runners and walkers came out to support the Kennedy family to raise funds for Dr. Brown's research at UMass Medical.

Sharon Timlin Memorial 5K Race to Cure ALS
The Sharon Timlin Memorial 5K Race to Cure ALS was held in June.

Thank you to Abbie Rosenberg and her tremendous committees and volunteers who made the Sharon Timlin Memorial 5K Race to Cure ALS such a success - over $1.5 million for ALS research.

Thank you to the Timlin family and friends for coming again to support the race and The Angel Fund.

And a special thanks to the baseball greats who took the time to sign autographs.
