Looking Toward this Sunday May 13, 2018

THIS SUNDAY, MAY 20  is commencement at Davidson College. One worship service will be held in the DCPC sanctuary at 8:30 a.m. Please wear red to celebrate Pentecost.

OUTDOOR WORSHIP AND PICNIC   at 10:30 a.m. at Fellowship Point, 212 Greyfriars Road, Mooresville, NC. Hang around for a picnic lunch, fellowship, and fun. Bring food to share; drinks will be provided. Please wear red to celebrate Pentecost.

Scott Kenefake will preach at the 8:30 service in the sanctuary.
Robert Alexander will preach at 10:30 at Fellowship
Point in Mooresville.

This week at 8:30 am in the Sanctuary (and replayed at 11:00 am on WDAV radio due to Commencement) we'll explore the familiar
Pentecost Sunday text, Acts 2:1-21, which describes the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus while they were in Jerusalem celebrating the Feast of Weeks.  We often describe this as the "birthday" of the Church.

But did you know that this story is also a symbolic reversal of the Tower of Babel story found in Genesis 11:1-9? (Humanity, once divided, is now brought together across differences such as language barriers), or that the Greek word for Wind or Spirit is feminine, or that Reformed Theologians like Jurgen Moltmann have made persuasive arguments for using feminine language when talking about the Holy Spirit, or that many other Christian writers and thinkers have described the Holy Spirit as an Artist? In the words of essayist and novelist James Baldwin (1924-1987), "Artists are the only people in society who can tell that society the truth about itself."
Thus, my Sermon Title, "The Spirit--She Is an Artist"
I look forward to sharing it with you.  Don't forget to wear red!

The Geneva Choir will sing Gracious Spirit, Dwell with Me at the 8:30 worship service.

The Pentecost Offering will be received this Sunday and May 27. This offering supports ministries with at risk children, youth, and young adults. Forty percent of the offering will be given to Lily Pad Haven, a Charlotte-based ministry that supports survivors of human trafficking. Please plan to give generously.

Music
JUST LISTENING- Music and the Beginner's Mind, May 21 at 7:00 p.m. in room 201. This workshop, led by Prof. John Morrison of the Longy School of Music, aims to reveal the joy of encountering music of any kind as a path to spiritual awareness. Paying special attention to energy and "not knowing," the workshop focuses on drawing out understanding of unfamiliar or difficult music by allowing participants simply to pay attention to what is heard. Through a progression of meditative listening, and responding to questions about what has been heard, we gradually build an organic sense of the whole, its flow of energy, and its emotional impact.

CARITAS ACAPELLA ENSEMBLE will be performing at DCPC on June 3 at 3:00. Half of the ticket sales will be donated to Project2Heal, a nonprofit that trains Labrador Retriever puppies to help people with physical and emotional challenges. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door, $5 for students, and free for children age 11 and under. For tickets call 980-272-8556 or email [email protected].
