Collaboration

As I mentioned in last month's newsletter, there are several important upcoming CE events this summer. The combined World Veterinary Rehabilitation Summit and 10th International Symposium on Veterinary Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy is right around the corner, starting at the end of this month. The consecutive summit and symposium will showcase the collaboration between veterinary technicians/nurses, physical therapists and veterinarians. The event will be a great opportunity to network with colleagues as well as gain perspectives, tips and techniques from others in our field.

The first portion of the event will be the World Veterinary Rehabilitation Summit which takes place on July 30th and 31st. On the 30th, canine, equine and ACVSMR laboratory sessions will be held. On the 31st, there will be three concurrent sessions: the APRVT summit, the joint AARV/ACVSMR summit and the PT summit. We are excited to be co-hosting with ACVSMR and we look forward to working more closely with them in the future. From August 1st through the 3rd will be the International Symposium on Veterinary Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy during which there will be many interesting breakfast rounds as well as lectures.

We hope that you can join us for the event. There will be several AARV board members attending, so please stop by and say hello. Also, don't forget to introduce yourselves to and thank our sponsors - PulseVet, Respond Systems and The Honest Kitchen - who will have booths set up during the AARV summit. See you in Knoxville!

And speaking of saying howdy, we will also have a booth at the AVMA convention in Denver. Stop by and show your support.

July 15th - The first call for grant proposals for two research grants. We have two $2,500 grants this year, one sponsored by Purina and one by the AARV. Important dates for these grants are as follows:
- July 15th - 1st call for grant proposals
- August 15th - 2nd call for grant proposals
- September 15th - final call for grant proposals
- September 30th - deadline for all grant proposals
- October 31st - notification of grant winner!
August 15th - Voting for the position of Legislative Liaison on the AARV board of directors will close.
September 1st - The AARV board of directors needs YOU! The position of treasurer will be opening up starting in January 2019 and nominations are due by September 1st.
October 1st - We are extending the deadline for the Royal Canin-sponsored student contest and the new deadline is October 1st!

Vote! Three candidates have been nominated for the open Legislative Liaison position on the AARV board of directors. The nominees are:

Call for Grant Proposals

AARV has established a competitive annual awards program to add to the evidence base for veterinary rehabilitation by providing grant funds to highly meritorious applications. We encourage individuals to submit grant proposals that advance the science of canine and/or equine rehabilitation.

The AARV will offer two grants in 2018, one sponsored by AARV and the other sponsored by Purina. Each grant is worth $2,500 and will be granted to an AARV member to perform research related to the field of animal rehabilitation. The Purina Research Grant is reserved for research related to the field of small animal sports medicine and rehabilitation. Applications must be submitted by September 30, 2018 and should follow the format described below. Applications will be reviewed by the Board of Directors and announcement of the awards will be made on October 31, 2018.

Applicants must be AARV members.

Grant proposal submission guidelines are detailed on the AARV website. Please submit your grant proposal for review and/or questions to Dr. Megan Ridley at [email protected].

AARV Student Members: Deadline for Royal Canin Student Case Report Competition Extended to October 1st

Calling all veterinary students! Are you interested in winning a trip to the 2019 VMX Expo in Orlando, Florida, January 19-23, 2019?

The American Association of Rehabilitation Veterinarians (AARV) has partnered with Royal Canin to offer an exciting opportunity for veterinary students with an interest in physical rehabilitation. Eligible students must currently be enrolled at a U.S. veterinary school during the 2018-2019 academic year, be a member in good standing of the AARV (student memberships are free!) and be able to attend the VMX 2019 Conference.

To be considered, a case report pertaining to physical rehabilitation MUST be submitted by October 1, 2018, 11:59 p.m. PST (note revised date). NO LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED. All case reports will be reviewed and the student whose case report is selected will win a trip to the 2019 VMX Conference. The selected student will present their case report as a 15-minute podium presentation during the AARV lecture track.

CRI Launches Certified Veterinary Acupuncture Therapist Program

Canine Rehabilitation Institute is pleased to announce the launch of its new Certified Veterinary Acupuncture Therapist Program, which will teach acupuncture from the medical/physiological perspective rather than from the traditional Chinese veterinary medicine perspective.

The Acupuncture Program includes two required modules and one elective. Each module includes three days in the classroom and approximately 16 hours of online content.

Courses are open only to licensed veterinarians and will be held at Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. The initial set of courses will be limited to 20 students with 5 faculty members on site.

Registration is open for the first module, which begins October 5, 2018. Please see the Acupuncture Program page on the CRI website for more details and the dates of additional upcoming courses.

Interested in Conducting Clinical Research?

Are you interested in conducting clinical research but don't know where to start?

Canine Rehabilitation Institute (CRI) has created a new online course to demystify clinical research for practicing rehabilitation therapists, interns and residents. Introduction to Veterinary Clinical Research is taught by CRI faculty member Chris Zink, DVM, PhD, DACVP, DACVSMR , who has spent more than 30 years doing research.

The entire process from concept to publication is covered during the 10-week course. You will view online lectures, read assignments, and participate in an online live discussion with Dr. Zink each week. You will develop a research hypothesis that matches your interests and clinical caseloads, and then design, carry out and analyze the data for a pilot study. This course is RACE approved by the AAVSB for 15 credit hours.

There are students from the first course that are now collaborating on studies and have been awarded research grants.

Plyometric Training in Dock Diving Dogs

A review of various muscles involved in the propulsion of dock diving dogs and discuss multiple exercises useful for increasing jump height, distance, and speed. As there are few veterinary species references on this subject, many activities listed are extrapolated from human sports medicine.

Functional Anatomy - Muscles Used in Specific Sporting and Working Events and Effective Strengthening Exercises

There are multitudes of activities for canine athletes. From performance to sporting to working and each one requires special conditioning for certain parts of the body. The conformation and show dog needs defined muscles and good muscle tone. The sporting dog needs muscle strengthening specific to its sport. The working dog needs conditioning for the ability to perform in every scenario asked of him or her. This requires the therapist to have exceptional anatomy knowledge to build the correct muscles for every situation.

Injury Prevention in Performance Dogs - Building Strength in Multiple Planes

Various exercises will be discussed for developing muscle endurance in multiple planes of movement and review activities to improve core muscle strength, which, in turn, results in more efficient movement during competition. Specific exercises for developing muscle endurance in performance animals are intended to increase strength and endurance in the three planes of motion.

Behavior and Physical Rehabilitation - Using Behavior Knowledge to Reinforce Rehabilitation Success for Technicians

Teaching foundation behaviors also improves the efficacy of rehabilitation by making exercises less difficult and more physiologically advantageous. Knowledge of animal communication, adequate preparation for each patient and familiarity of behavioral concepts all contribute to decreased fear and anxiety in the clinic and improve the physiologic value of each physical rehabilitation treatment.

Client Education: It's Teachable! The Rules of Engagement: Tips for Improving Handler and Dog Interaction to Optimize Therapeutic Exercise Outcome

Physical rehabilitation is a unique area of veterinary medicine that requires the practitioner to simultaneously be a proficient, goal orientated provider of therapy, skilled communicator and empowering educator. Mastering and applying competencies in communication and education can improve owner compliance, positively impact patient care, and improve therapeutic exercise outcomes.

Reversing Their World: Improving Body Awareness in Agility Dogs

Various exercises are being used for improving proprioception and spatial awareness in agility dogs. By challenging these dogs to walk in "reverse" and develop edge awareness, not only will they develop more body awareness of their body, they may become more efficient in their movement during competition.

Complications in Physical Rehabilitation - Knowledge and Observational Skills Crucial to the Veterinary Technician

It is important for the technician to have excellent observation skills to ensure good, effective rehabilitation. There are so many things that can go wrong after a surgery or injury and most of the time, technicians are the ones who implement the veterinarian's treatment plan. It is critical to be able to note a change in gait or behavior that would indicate a problem and inform the veterinarian for reevaluation of the patient and revision of the plan.

The APRVT encourages a well rounded applicant by utilizing a points-based system as part of eligibility criteria for a VTS (Physical Rehabilitation). There are so many key components that a credentialed veterinary technician has in the specialty, and the APRVT wants to capture it! Prospective applicants are encouraged to earn points in multiple categories such as becoming an associate member of the American Association of Rehabilitation Veterinarians or writing educational pieces for the public or colleagues.
