A personal welcome from Kevin & Sue
A figgy welcome to all our new members.

We love running this little club and are here to help in anyway we can. Although I personally don't claim to know everything about the car, as a club we are truly blessed to be surrounded by such helpful and friendly members who we can turn too, so ask away!

We wanted to remind everyone that we are always on the lookout for great stories and helpful and interesting content.

We have corrected the error on our webpage. Read more

Remembering Steve Davies
We wanted to pass on our love and hugs to Dee Davies who lost her amazing husband Steve on the 14th November. Along with Dee, Steve attended a number of our events in their Topaz Mist Figaro named 'Lady Paloma'. He will be sadly missed and loved being amongst other owners and talking about his car to anyone.

My Figaro has shrunk!
Mandy Forder shared a rather unique Christmas present which was handmade (crocheted) by her super talented mum Sandy Leon Owen. The detail is truly amazing with all the lights, wing mirrors and even door handles included on Molly. It's a one off and we can imagine, quite a challenge to make.

Breathe new life into your seats
We publish a complete guide to restoring your 30 year old seats. With many of us still in lockdown, this could be the perfect antidote.
Without question, the leather seats in your Figaro are one of the most luxurious elements on your car. However at the age of 30 they maybe looking a bit tired and in need of some much needed TLC. Regular 'feeding' the leather with conditioner can improve the look in the short term and stop them drying out, however years and years of wear and tear can take its toll and no amount of cleaning will bring them back to what they looked like when the car was first manufactured.

But there is a way to improve the look and make them look so much better. The club works with The Leather Repair Company who have developed a colour match dye. They produce a DIY kit allowing you to carry out the work in your garage or house. The kit comes in two sizes, small (two seats - £42) and medium (all seats £59), and contains everything you need to complete the restoration.
By cleaning the seats with a special solution and applying a dye which has been mixed to match the the original colour, the seats can become almost new again. Also the process can hide any nasty marks and camouflage small cuts. The existing seats may suffer from yellow UV bleaching (especially the rear seat). The seats can also become faded and cracked.

If the seats are okay but just need some light restoration you can do this whilst they are in the car, however if they are in a very poor state we recommend removing the seats and carrying out the work in a workshop/house as this will give you more access to all the seat edges.

Below are some pictures and video of me restoring a single seat.
Before and After. Not only does the dye camouflage nasty marks and creases it also provides a better cleaning surface to maintain the seat
My video takes you through all the processes and includes some great tips to help you too.
9 Part Figaro Restoration Series includes lots of tips and tricks
If you're considering buying a 'project car' this year then the series written last year by editor Simon Goldsworthy is a great place to start. The 9 part series starts back in April 2020 when Simon buys a Figaro at auction for £3,021 which is located in Scotland and transports it back to his home in Lincolnshire.

Our very own Simon Smith helps him with priceless advice during his journey.

So good I brought it twice
After a seven year gap and two Smart Cars, member Evelyn Binns went in search of another Topaz Mist Figaro
Words & Pictures Evelyn Binns
Earlier this year during the first lockdown, I got very sentimental about the Topaz Mist Figaro I bought from Algy’s Autos in 2007, but had to sell in 2013 because of health problems. It was much loved and looked after and I was sad to see it go.

Seven years and two Smart Cars later, I don’t have the same health problems that made it difficult getting in and out of a Figaro so I hankered after another one. There were very few Topaz Mists being advertised at the time but we found one in West Bromwich – not the most convenient location as we live in West Cornwall! However, after a 500-mile round trip and a bit of haggling, the car was mine and arrived on a transporter a few days later.

Determined to re-live the magic of my first gleaming and utterly reliable Figaro, I needed to get some cosmetic tidying done – or so I thought.
We took a deep breath and booked the car into The Figaro Shop in Didcot for a complete body and mechanical inspection. Christian Brooks and his colleagues were great, but a bit more needed doing than we thought!

Three weeks later, we collected Figaro #2 from The Figaro Shop who did a fantastic job replacing the roof, re-spraying the rear wings the correct colour (!), making the engine run smooth and sweet again and silencing sundry suspension rattles. Had we poked around a bit more carefully when buying the car we would have noticed the rusted boot floor and driver’s side sill which they also expertly replaced.

So just as winter is upon us and another lockdown starts I am all ready to go! But never mind, there’s always next spring and summer to look forward to. And there couldn’t be a better place than Cornwall to own a Figaro, the little car that always makes everyone smile!
Let's get the measuring tape out
Apart from a few key dimensions, as a club we were surprised that more were not available such as the seats and boot areas.
So last month we commissioned an artist to create some nice line drawings and got the tape measure out.

The result is a detailed drawing where you will find over 40 measurements. Some key ones like length 3740mm, width 1630mm and height 1365mm are in bold.

Thanks to the low-hung exhaust the ground clearance is actually very low at only 145mm.

We also included useful data such as front seat height to roof which is 920mm and the rear bench height to the roof at 820mm.

The top and bottom boot heights and depths are approximate as the shapes are varied. The information has been added to our website where you can print off an A4 version.
Inspired by Gemstones
We are all familiar with the cars unusual colours but did you know according to an early marketing brochure they were actually
inspired by gemstones?
Back is 1990 Nissan produced a 14 page A5 brochure showing early sketches and detailing of the car.

In addition to familiar images the publication also covers interesting items such as airflow and additional strengthening and rigidity of the chassis.

Divided into sections including Concept, Exterior, Interior, Mechanism of convertible top & Specification it's a very rare find.
Page 5 details how the colours were chosen. Nissan must have been looking for 4 colours to represent the seasons and rather the publication reveal that these were inspired by gemstones.

Emerald Green is the crisp green colour of Emeralds
Pale Aqua is the blue colour of Aquamarine
Topaz Mist is the calm beige of Topaz
Lapis Grey is the deep blue-grey of Lapis Lazuli

Thanks to Japanese Member Yuki Saga for sending us a copy of the brochure.

Audio Upgrade
Read how club member Prem Reynolds took the audio in his Figaro to another level.
Having upgraded the door speakers to Hertz and the head unit to 3+ I still wasn’t happy with the sound in the car. Much better than the original speakers without a doubt but I wanted to really cut down the cabin vibration as much as increasing the power driving the speakers.

Our head unit was already upgraded but after discussing this with David Beer at Clarion he agreed to rework the internals for RCAs – 2 sets (sub + amp). Being a little Audiophile we opted for an Audison amp and matching component speakers in the front doors and used the Hertz for the rear positions that required some panel cutting...
Vanity Mirror (Official Accessory)
After years of hunting, Member Paul Hodgkinson managed to bag himself one of the rarest accessories.
One of 55 optional accessories that you could buy back in 1991. The mirror sleeve is printed with FIGARO and was designed to attach to the sunblind and includes a built-in sculptured handle allowing the driver to slide it out of its sleeve.

The price back then was just £19 but they go for many times that now! Picture is courtesy of member Paul Hodgkinson.
My interior has become sticky
One of the most common issues found on the Figaro is the dreaded sticky interior trim syndrome!
When the car was manufactured back in 1991 Nissan finished the internal space in ivory and clad the cockpit using plastic trim panels, many of which use blind clips to hold them in place. Nissan state in their marketing blurb (published in February 14th 1991) that “a special paint is applied to the dashboard” and this is the same as the paint used on the interior panels.

What causes the plastic to become sticky?
Our theory is that Nissan used softeners and plasticizers to make the plastic trim more pliable to help assembly. Over time with the combination of heat and UV these plasticizers migrate into the surface and combine with other materials on the plastic such as the ‘Special Paint’ used by Nissan and interact which to the touch then feel sticky.

Visual Signs
You can also see this effect as the painted ivory surface can become ‘blotchy’ and or look ‘scratched’ exposing the original plastic which will look like a lighter ivory colour. This occurs because the paint has lost its adhesion meaning its very easy to scratch the surface, especially around the safety belt anchoring points and front windscreen edges.
Above (Before) shows how panels can become blotchy or scratched where the paint has been removed exposing the original plastic (lighter colour). Above (After) is how good it can look after cleaning with Soda Crystals or Traffic Film Remover (see below).
DO NOT USE SOLVENTS SUCH AS WHITE SPIRIT OR THINNERS AS THIS WILL MELT THE PLASTIC AND PAINT!
Cleaning with Soda Crystals
Initially we recommend using Soda Crystals which is readily available and inexpensive. The cleaner is also not to aggressive on the panels. Mix 1/5 using 1 Cup (200g) to 1 Pint (500g) of hot water. You can clean the panels whilst they are in situ within the car, however if you really want to do a thorough clean and get to all the surfaces the panels will need to be removed (see below ) but this will require care and a trim removal tool. Before you start we recommend using the cleaner on a part of the car that is not always visible as a Test Area. Say near the rear seat base so you can get used to the cleaning process. If you wish you can remove the paint by applying with a Magic Sponge but do not apply to aggressively as it can actually mark the plastic. Using a warm bucket of water, wash the cleaner away and dry.
Cleaning with Traffic Film Remover
If you are finding that after using Soda Crystals the area is still sticky then you could try applying Traffic Film Remover. This product is actually designed to remove road grime without damaging the paintwork or mechanical parts of your car. It is more powerful than Soda Crystals but we always recommend trying it in a small test area first. To mix use 1 part to 100 parts water and apply to surface. For a more powerful mix dilute 1 part with 50 parts water. Apply to surface and leave to work for up to 5 minutes. Do not allow the product to dry on surface.

Dry off with a cloth and if necessary repeat until you are happy with the finish.
We have more information about this issue including how to remove the panels Read more
Nissan Figaro 30th Birthday Party Weekend 2021

We invite members to bring their Nissan Figaro and celebrate the cars’ 30th Birthday at this unique weekend of fun, friendship and frivolity in the Cotswolds!
Attend on SUNDAY 27th JUNE 2021 for the main event which will include access to our Figaro Display Field, Vintage Village, participation in the mega convoy drive out, awards and more to come. Or if you are travelling a long way why not make a weekend of it? We have pre-reserved a number of rooms for the event so you can enjoy the luxury of Walton Hall Hotel & Spa.

£25 per Entry Fee Per Car
Our plan for the day is to create a ‘festival feel’ where members come together to share the love they have for their Figaros, and enjoy a Festival type atmosphere.
How the club started
Our son Daniel had always wanted a Figaro having seen the car at his local garage when he was just 16. After saving for a number of years (plus a small contribution from his mum and dad!) he at last brought an emerald green model in May 2008.

Following the purchase we searched on the internet for a club in the hope we could attend events and meet other owners. We were amazed that at that time no club existed so the Figaro Owners Club was born!

We decided to build a basic website and forum which took a few months and on the 1st March 2009 we pressed the publish button and waited to see if anyone wanted to join? Within a week we had 10 members, a month 35 and a year 478!

Today the club has around 1,300 members worldwide in countries including New Zealand, Japan, Australia, USA, Canada, Germany, Spain, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Sweden and many more.
