Lockerly Newsletter June 2018
From the Director

There is nothing quite like the excited squeal of a child experiencing something new and thrilling for the first time.  On May 19 at our first ever Kids Fishing Event, the air at Lockerly was filled with many excited squeals and every single one of them made my heart sing.

I believe that every human deserves a chance to have a relationship with the natural world around them.  However, in a technologically driven world that is covered in concrete, it isn't always convenient or easy for humans to have rewarding experiences in nature.

This is why places like Lockerly are so important.  We exist to provide a safe space for humans to see, touch & smell the natural world around them and to hear the nuances of the symphony being played by Mother Nature; and the excited squeal of child is part of that symphony.

I leave you today with two of my favorite videos from the Kids Fishing Event.

Happy Trails,

Jennifer

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Lockerly Under the Stars was a tremendous success last year!  In order to keep that tradition going, WE NEED YOUR HELP! Please consider volunteering a little of your time and talent to this very important event.

The next meeting of the LUTS committee will be on Monday, June 18 at 9:00am in the Arboretum office.

Volunteers are needed on the following committees:
  • Decorations: The fabulous and talented Linda Poyner has agreed to lead this committee.  She is looking for 4-5 more people to help her make our tables shine that night!
  • Auction items:  We want to build a reputation for the having the best and most unique auction items in town!  If you have creative ideas about auction items, join this committee!
  • Clean-Up:  Clean-up is a crucial part of an event at Lockerly, especially an outdoors event.  We can't leave things out overnight, so clean-up must happen right after the event. With a crew of 5-10, we can make light work of it!

Spinning Wheel

You will remember from a previous newsletter that Bruce Greenwall generously donated a spinning wheel to Lockerly that was in Rose Hill when he and his family arrived from Pennsylvania to be the caretakers of Lockerly in the late 1960's.  Cappy Szabo, a Lockerly volunteer and lover of antiques eagerly undertook the job of researching the wheel, and this is what she discovered:

The wheel dates to circa 1880's and was aptly called the "walking wheel" because the spinner walks back and forth beside it to spin.  She steps back to draw out the fleece over the tip of the spindle, then forward to wind the spun yarn onto the spindle.  One hand turns the huge wheel while the other hand holds the sliver of fleece.  Irish colonists called with spinning wheel the "long wheel," to Scots it was the "muckle wheel," Welsh families remember it as the "great wheel" of Wales and English ladies spun their fleece on the "high wheel" or "Jersey wheel."

It is unknown who made the wheel, but it was likely made in Georgia and was used for spinning wool.

It has a fine Bench with gouged or scalloped ends, turned spindles, legs and upright post or support, possibly hand turned. The spindles in the wheel were assembled with hand made pegs and the nails in the wheel are also hand made. Wheel, legs, upright support, tension screw, maidens and mother of all were made from a mix of woods.

Discovery Boxes

The next time you take a stroll down our nature trail, watch for our new Discover Boxes!  Designed and installed as an Eagle Scout project by Caleb Fields, there are 5 of these boxes along the Nature Trail.  Education Programs Coordinator Madeline McCloskey will fill the boxes with education material and information over the summer.

Since Arthur Eldred became the first Eagle Scout in 1912, the rank has represented a milestone of accomplishment - perhaps without equal - that is recognized across the country and even the world. Men who have earned the Eagle Scout rank count it among their most treasured possessions. "Eagle Scout" is not just an award; it is a state of being. Those who earned it as boys continue to earn it every day as men.
