The IOOS Association and the Consortium for Ocean Leadership, in conjunction with the Senate Oceans Caucus, co-hosted a briefing on the value of ocean data to the Blue Economy on July 11, 2018. Caucus Chairs Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) gave remarks on the importance of ocean and coastal data to their states’ economies. The panel included representatives of the maritime, energy, seafood and tourism industries.

Gliders Aid Atlantic Hurricane Season

|
This hurricane season, IOOS will partner with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. Navy and several universities to launch 15 unmanned underwater vehicles known as
gliders
in the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Ten of the gliders will be provided by the U.S. Navy. The gliders will measure ocean temperature and salinity, which researchers hope will improve hurricane forecasting and modeling.

In July, the Caribbean Coastal Ocean Observing System (
CARICOOS
) launched an app for beachgoers. The app, called Pa' la Playa, informs beachgoers of weather, surf and water quality conditions at over 100 beaches in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Pa' la Playa includes maps and photos and is available in the Apple App store and on Google Play.
