LEADING WOMEN EDUCATORS . . .
As over 1800 leading women educators assembled in Austin, TX for the 2018 International Convention, it was an exciting time! A time to hear from keynote speakers Benjamin Zander and Nadia Lopez (how I wish that every one of you could have heard their talks), and time (about 9 hours) devoted to the consideration of the amendments to our governing documents. The name of the international organization continues to be The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, also referred to as the Society; however each state organization of the Society shall be designated by a geographic area or by a country name. Since each chapter shall be named by the state organization, we see no changes at this time to your chapter names.
The amendment pertaining to Payments of Dues and Fees passed with the proviso that commencing June 30, 2019:
"The membership year is July 1 - June 30. A member shall pay annual dues and fees no later than June 30 for the following fiscal year."
Although this takes effect in 2019, chapters will want to begin considering how they will handle this change.
It is anticipated that the revised documents will be available digitally during the next couple of months. I will alert you when they are posted. In addition there will be further information from your Ohio officers. The Society revisions will necessitate revisions to the Ohio Bylaws and ultimately to your chapter Standing Rules. I think the appropriate phrase is "Stand by. . ."
Ohio was represented by 25 members present at the Convention. For all the work that occurred, there was also time for exploring Austin, dining together, meeting friends and hearing of their chapter and state ideas. Some of us were fortunate enough to enjoy a tour of DKG Headquarters. If you have not done so, please include it in any future visits to Austin. You'll be glad you did.
Ohio continues to be the third largest state in terms of membership and voting strength and is fourth largest in number of chapters. This is an enviable position but one that requires the efforts of all of us to maintain. We heard that DKG is the largest professional women's organization in the world and attending the International Convention drives home the fact that we are indeed an international organization. Please plan to attend future conferences and conventions and be impressed by . . .

BETA IOTA
Summer Science Camp in Holmes County
Beta Iota DKG Chapter in Holmes County, under the leadership of past president, Bonnie Trubee, planned, organized and held a three-day science camp for area students who completed grades 4-9. Class activities were interactive and hands-on in nature with open sharing of observations and discussion. The students could choose to take six different classes from the following choices: Drone Surveying Technology, Feed Your Brain with Logic Puzzlements, Fun With Computer Programming, Dissecting a Frog and Surprising Discoveries Within an Owl Pellet, Lego Robotics Basics with Motors and Sensors, Programming a Lego Robot to Navigate a Maze, Lego Fidget Spinners, Identifying Pollinator Bees from Look-Alikes, Out Your Backdoor Hike Identification of Mammals by Skulls, Pelts, Tracks, or Scat, and Wildlife From A Different Prospective of the Wildlife/Human Conflicts.
A closing program for all students and parents addressed the geological changes of the local state and Holmes County area from the Pleistocene Age 15,000 years ago with examples of fossils and early inhabitants of the local area.
The teachers of all the classes were volunteers who were knowledgeable of the topics they presented. The volunteers shared their time as a way to give back to the community. This is the ninth year the camp has been held. Beta Iota Chapter President, Bonnie Agawa, was one of the teachers and taught about owl pellets.
Beta Iota Chapter DKG members volunteered to help with registration, teaching, serving as class helpers as needed, monitoring the lunch activities and collecting feedback from students. The science camp was held at the local West Holmes High School.

Michelle Langmeyer, Beta Upsilon Chapter in Auglaize County, has received a 2018 New Project Award of $4,550.00 from The DKG Educational Foundation for Germinating (Sprouting) Adolescent Interest in Healthy Food Selection and Consumption Through Indoor Gardening.
Louann Henderson, Gamma Sigma Chapter in Perry County, has received a 2018 New Project Award of $2,350.00 from The DKG Educational Foundation for BeWISE Camp.
Eileen McNally, Beta Delta Chapter in Newark, Ohio Webmaster and DKG Communications and Marketing Committee, was a presenter in two sessions at the International Convention,
Sharing Our DKG Pride: Stories from the Heart as a Marketing/Recruiting Tool and
Editor and Webmaster Networking.
Ann Todd, Zeta Chapter in Huron County, Ohio Corresponding Secretary/ Chair of Communications and Publicity and DKG Educators Book Award Committee, was a presenter at the International Convention,
Impacting Education Worldwide through Books.

A. MARGARET BOYD FELLOWSHIP
A. Margaret Boyd was a woman of great integrity and believed in helping teachers throughout the world. She worked diligently to establish the ideals of DKG and promote cultural and educational exchanges among teachers and countries. Miss Boyd exemplified Purpose Five, "To endow scholarships to aid outstanding women educators." Voluntary member contributions make this a very active fellowship for ADS. Her overseas scholarship was begun in 1947 while she was serving as state president. Today this fellowship is awarded to a student coming to the United States to do graduate study and to ADS members who study abroad. ADS works with the Institute of International Education to obtain the overseas students. Members are richly rewarded by meeting and working with these International students.
To be considered for this scholarship, members should complete the application by February 1. The application is on the ADSOEF website.

Being involved at the state level of DKG offers numerous opportunities for personal and professional growth -- not to mention the lifetime friendships that are forged. I speak from personal experience when I say that being a state officer enriches one's life in many ways. I have women all over Ohio I call "friend" because of my involvement in Alpha Delta State. You, too, can have this experience by applying for nomination.
At the 2019 State Convention, we will be electing new officers and members of the nominations committee for the next biennium and three board members for the education foundation for a four-year term. Therefore, it is time to begin this nomination process.

In the next few weeks, Alpha Delta State Webmaster, Eileen McNally, will be checking all chapter websites. She will use the
Checklist for Standards
to be sure all websites are in compliance and will contact all chapter webmasters by the middle of August.
Chapter webmasters must submit
Form 72 by October 31 to get their
2018 - 2020 Compliance Seal that affirms all standards are met.
