Physicians: Do you have expertise in cybersecurity? Join HHS virtual focus group - Aug. 9
Physicians are invited to participate in a virtual focus group that is part of a project to improve cybersecurity in health care. The United States Department of Health and Human Services is seeking advice from the health care industry around the country on how to promote cybersecurity in our sector.
As part of that effort, a virtual focus group will be conducted among health practitioners in Colorado on Aug. 9, 6 - 8 p.m. MT online via a WebEx conference. The aim of this two-hour discussion will be to learn more about awareness, practices, and attitudes towards cybersecurity.
Participants in this important effort will help inform and shape the plans and outreach efforts of HHS as it works to address health care cybersecurity issues.
Due to federal regulations on this type of project, financial incentives cannot be provided. These focus group sessions are being organized by a research firm working with the government. This is a great opportunity to weigh in on an important issues facing our industry today. It's important -- and it should be interesting, too.

Federal CMS releases proposed rule for the 2019 Medicare fee schedule update
On July 12, 2018, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (federal CMS) released the Revisions to Payment Policies under Physician Fee Schedule and Other Revisions to Part B for CY 2019; Medicare Shared Savings Program Requirements proposed rule with comment period. This is the first year that the agency is combining the Medicare PFS and the Quality Payment Program proposed rules. They are requesting comments on the proposed rule by Sept. 10, 2018, and a final rule is expected to be released in November. The federal CMS has published several fact sheets on the rule including a fact sheet on the QPP changes, and a fact sheet on the PFS proposals for 2019. The American Medical Association, and the Colorado Medical Society as part of the federation, will continue to analyze the proposal and draft responses as appropriate. Know Your Legal Rights: Determine whether Colorado law applies for your patient's health insurance
Physicians have rights under Colorado law when it comes to dealing with health insurance plans. Information on many of these laws is available to CMS members in the online database "
Know Your Legal Rights." The Colorado statutes and regulations contained in this compendium apply to individuals whose coverage is through a fully insured health plan.
Did you know there is an easy way to determine whether or not the Colorado law applies for your patient's health insurance? C.R.S. 10-16-135 was enacted requiring standardization of health benefit plan ID cards. Part of that legislation requires that the designation "CO-DOI" must be placed on the card in a clear and conspicuous manner for any and all plans regulated in whole or in part by the Colorado Division of Insurance. (This is usually in the bottom left-hand corner of the ID card.)

Colorado Consortium relaunches online CME on prescribing for pain management
The Colorado Consortium for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention has relaunched their online continuing education course, "Guidelines and Tools for Improving Pain Management: Opioid Stewardship."
Working with the Center for Health, Work and Environment, the consortium redesigned the course to help health care professionals in Colorado stay in step with the latest opioid prescription guidelines and best practices. It is applicable to any health care professional in Colorado who treats patients dealing with pain, from clinicians to dentists to practice managers.
As the opioid crisis grows, it's more important now than ever that health care professionals stay informed about the latest pain management policies and practices to deliver the best possible care to their patients.
Those who take the course will gain the skills and knowledge to:
- Follow the latest state, federal, and professional society guidelines to improve patient care
- Apply evidence-based, comprehensive pain management practices and address opioid misuse in your community
- Earn Continuing Medical Education (CME), Continuing Pharmacy Education (CPE), and Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) credit*
Over the past six years, more than 2,800 health professionals have completed the course and more than 90 percent say that they have applied what they learned in their practice. Building on the past success, the redesigned version covers current federal and state prescription guidelines, offers guidance on how to help patients with pain return to work, and more.

Division of Insurance releases preliminary 2019 health insurance information
Final approval of plans expected soon
The Colorado Division of Insurance released preliminary information for proposed health plans and premiums for 2019 for individuals and small groups on July 13, 2018. The division is accepting comments on these plans through Aug. 3 and will announce the final plans in late summer/early fall.
The same seven companies that offered on-exchange, individual plans are returning for 2019 and all counties in Colorado will have at least one on-exchange company selling individual health plans.
For 2019, a total of 16 insurance companies plan to offer 808 individual and small group plans in Colorado. The average requested premium change for individual plans across all companies is a 5.94 percent increase, while in the small group market, the average requested change across all companies is a 7.15 percent increase.
The plans and requested premiums from the insurance companies, also called filings, are available on the Division's "Health Insurance Filings" web page (click "Search Health Insurance Plan Filings" on that page).
