President's Message
Dear Friends of SEF,

Welcome 2021!! The SEF Board of Trustees and I wish you and your families a safe, healthy and happy New Year! We are excited to begin our work on the second half of the school year and look forward to the many wonderful opportunities we have to come together as a community in support of all the good work that we collectively do.

SEF believes that every person in San Gabriel has the right to enjoy health and wellness and as such we place great value in the mental, physical and social health of our community. During the 2020/21 academic year, we are proud to have provided free parent education workshops, student enrichment programming and family events all in accordance with our very own health and wellness initiatives.

Thrilled to expand in our efforts, we are honored to serve the 264 amazing district teachers who are rising to the challenge of bringing their curriculum online for their students. It is through their unique teaching styles, confidence and sense of responsibility they strive to make distance learning the best it can be. Their courage, patience, dedication, hard work, passion and commitment to teaching is what inspires us to celebrate and support them in the work that they do. Thanks to generous grant funding provided by Schools First Credit Union, and in partnership with the San Gabriel Teachers Association, in December we hosted a virtual Pound workout class and invited all 264 teachers to participate. Feedback from the teachers such as, "A huge thank you to you and SEF for the fun and energetic pound class, and also for the cooking class a couple of weeks ago. SEF's generosity to SGUSD teachers is so very much appreciated, especially during this pandemic year", and "I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the pound class today. AJ is awesome!! I would love to continue having classes with her. And I am so appreciative of your support of teachers", was so positive we have already scheduled the next class for February. Additionally, thanks to the volunteers who gathered safely, and at a distance, to assemble gift swag bags for every teacher on all eight school sites and the TOSA's at the district education center.  Included in the gift bags, a lovely Johnny Was face mask and a bottle of Pez Powder.

As we continue to build on the health and wellness initiatives to include community outreach, we are delighted to be offering a free community wide adult Pound Exercise Class on Tuesday, January 26, 2021. Designed for all fitness levels, registered participants will engage with the instructor in this very special drumming class. Class and registration details may be found on the flier below. Deadline to register is 1/21.

As always, we will continue to invest in programs that support the academic progress and success of the district students as they move through their grades K-12 academic journey. We envision days of joyful learning where students develop and build strong friendships and continue to grow academically, emotionally and socially each and every day and excitedly look forward to sharing details of our upcoming Watershed Explorer Program and first annual art exhibition Dream. Imagine. Create. with you soon!

Sharing smiles and happiness,
Alison DeVriendt

SEF Celebrates SGUSD Teachers with a Special Gift!

SEF Board volunteers and Pez Cantina owner, Bret Thompson adhering to safety guidelines and working together to assemble and package 264 bags.

As the role of teachers continues to expand to include more duties and responsibilities than ever before, we are proud to develop resources and programming the teachers need to succeed and stay healthy.  Each day they continue to face unprecedented challenges with strength, courage and the expertise you'd expect.

We will continue our efforts to make a positive impact on the psychological well being of these superstars. Thanks to the volunteers for assembling the hundreds of gift bags that have been delivered to the sites. We are beyond thrilled to share a smile (underneath a beautiful Johnny Was face mask), and spice, with this resilient group of
 educators!!
