Lake of the Isles Lutheran  Church

June 2018

But Peter said, "I have no silver or gold, but what I have I give you; in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, stand up and walk."   And he took him by the right hand and raised him up; and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong.               Acts 3: 6-7  NRSV

Even the most casual Christians know there is a book in the New Testament called Acts, but they may not be aware of it its full name- The Acts of the Apostles.  A smaller group might recall that the story of Pentecost, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, is recorded in this book.  They might, however, become uncomfortable when asked whether the story of Saul on the road to Damascus is located in Acts. "Now, isn't there a King Saul in the Old Testament?   Is that the same one?" It is unfortunate that we read so little from the Acts of the Apostles and the story of the founding of the church during the regular Sundays of the Church year.  After all, St. Luke the Evangelist, doctor and historian spent a great deal of time and energy writing this story.

Yes, it is a shame that so few people today know about the trials and tribulations of the early church.  So this summer, as a sermon series, I am walking through the chapters of the Acts of Apostles to help you discover the wonder and energy of the early church being guided by the presence of the Holy Spirit.  As a preview, I have included a picture from Chapter 3 called "Peter and John Healing the Lame Man at the Beautiful Gate." It is a charming story of the apostles embracing the healing ministry of Jesus. The healing of the lame man mirrors the same pattern of Jesus' own healing in the Gospels, but now the apostles themselves heal in "the name of Jesus."  It is a powerful reminder that God's healing and wholeness enters into this broken world, not through the apostles, but through "the name of Jesus."

The apostles Peter and John are only a few of the characters mentioned in Acts.  More apostles will follow including Stephen, Paul, Barnabas and Silas.  We will even touch on the three missionary journeys of Paul.  (Colorful maps are always included in a good study Bible.)  For the early church, the apostles were the heroes who modeled the Christian faith.  They faced persecution and trials, but they remained faithful to tell the story of Jesus' death and resurrection, first in Jerusalem, then in Judea and Samaria and unto  the ends of the earth.

Don't worry if you miss a Sunday- the sermons are always available on the LOTI website.  And if you would like to join us, you can learn even more about the Acts of the Apostles at the 10:00 Wednesday morning Bible Study- coffee and treats included.

Peace, Pastor Arden Haug

Working Speaker Series

Working is the theme of an ongoing speaker series in which people talk about what they do all day and how they feel about what they do. Many people within our congregation are engaged in fascinating work, and this series gives us an opportunity to learn more about what they do.
On  Sunday, June 10th , we'll hear from  Theodora (Tedi) Mathis. Tedi is a Social Media Strategist and she has worked on brands such as Thrivent Financial, Cheerios, Yoplait and the Minnesota Super Bowl. She currently works for a company called The Social Lights, a social media consultancy helping companies grow by strengthening their social capability.
Tedi's talk will take place after a brief coffee break following the Sunday morning service. Those who are interested will be invited to take their coffee/tea into the Christy Room for about 45 minutes. The first 20-25 minutes will be an informal talk by Tedi, leaving the remaining time for questions from those in attendance.

If anyone in the congregation is interested in sharing their own Working story, email jannahaug@yahoo.com

ASI Spelmanslag & Cloudberries Performance

Although midsummer sounds like July or August in the US, it is celebrated in June in Scandinavia. It is the time when the days are long and the colors of sea and forest are vibrant. Traditional fiddlers in costume from the American Swedish Institute Spelmanslag and the women's chorus the Cloudberries will perform at LOTI for our 9:30 worship service on Father's Day, June 17th. They will perform traditional fiddle tunes and accompany the congregation in singing favorite Swedish hymns, including "Children of the Heavenly Father" and "How Great Thou Art."
