Fernway Report | July 26, 2018
Review this report to learn more about what's happened in the past 24 hours at Fernway Elementary School, which was damaged by fire on July 10, 2018.
What's New Today
Temporary School Location - Shared Shaker Schools
  • After urgent and extensive reviews of potential sites for the temporary location of Fernway School, Shaker Heights Schools Superintendent Dr. Wilkins has accepted the recommendation of Fernway Principal Mr. Hayward and District staff to accommodate Fernway students in Shaker Schools. This location is the best immediate available option to accommodate the Fernway community.
  • The following schools are under consideration to share space: Boulevard, Onaway, and Woodbury. The respective building principals and District staff are working together to identify specific available classrooms and offices. As soon as the spaces are selected, we will coordinate with affected teachers and staff.
  • We ask that parents limit their queries to Mr. Hayward, Dr. Wilkins and other District and Fernway staff to allow us to complete our analysis. We will announce the specific details of the exact school locations and classrooms at the community meeting on Wednesday, August 1.
Shaker Schools Foundation Fernway Fund Update
  • The Shaker Schools Foundation's Green Family Challenge has been met and exceeded, raising more than $26,000 to support Fernway to-date.
  • All Fernway Fund donations will be used to support learning experiences that were lost or compromised as a result of the fire. The Foundation will disburse funds to each teacher to ensure they have what they need for the first day of school. Donations also will be used to support supplemental needs for the temporary classrooms and enrichment activities for Fernway students in the upcoming year, including field trips, in-class presentations and all-school gatherings.
