They call it “Korean Thanksgiving,” but it doesn’t involve turkey, cranberry sauce or football. Queens Botanical Garden will host the Chuseok Moon Festival on both days this weekend. This celebration of Korean culture will feature an abundance of food, activities, and time-honored products. The musical entertainment will be heavy with K-pop.
These lessons will truly float your boat. The American Small Craft Association will offer a Learn to Sail course at the Meadow Lake Boathouse this month. It consists of classes on three Saturdays – Sept. 7, 14, and 21 – and participants must attend all three. Designed for beginners, the program combines lectures, activities, and time on the water.
The summer is almost over, but the borough is still hot and full of fun activities. This week brings a two-day Korean festival, sailing lessons, a grape harvest, “slick” music, and the chance to fly some creative kites with some creative types. Joe DiStefano is the Queens Tourism Council's official foodie. He'll eat anything...and write about it in his yummy blog. In this post, he hits Antojitos Doña Fela in Jackson Heights. The famous cart serves chicharron con camote, a common Peruvian breakfast. He finds unctuous slabs of pork belly and sweet potato in a torpedo-shaped roll with pickled red onions.
Like most great works of art, this takes some concentration. The Noguchi Museum is currently exhibiting “Body-Space Devices,” which consists of about 30 of the namesake’s works. The show is about to be reconfigured as a set for “Brendan Fernandes: Contract and Release,” a collaboration with Fernandes, who works at the intersection of dance and the visual arts.
Jack Eichenbaum is the official Queens historian as per Borough President Melinda Katz. He writes articles. He leads walking tours. He serves on the Queens Historical Society's board. Jack (second from left in action on a tour) also offers lectures, like Jewish Life in Queens in Flushing on Sept. 8. History, demographics, and maybe a little gefilte fish.
