Student Interns: Clinical Practice & Medicaid Billing

NASW-NJ is in receipt of the recent newsletter, Volume 28, No. 9, dated July 2018, issued by the NJ Division of Medical Assistance & Health Services (DMAHS). In this guidance, the Division states that the Social Work Licensing Regulations promulgated by the Board of Social Work Examiners (N.J.A.C. 13:44G) prohibit social work interns from performing clinical social work activities in mental health and drug/alcohol clinics.

NASW-NJ believes this determination to be an inadvertent misinterpretation by DMAHS of the Social Work Regulations. NASW-NJ, along with other concerned organizations, has issued a letter to DMAHS outlining our concerns and seeking resolution.
Take the Clinical Social Work Survey
NASW-NJ is working with the NJ Department of Human Services to explore the possibility of LCSWs becoming approved as independent behavioral health care providers under Medicaid/NJ Family Care. This recognition of LCSWs' skills and training as mental health professionals is long overdue.

In order to move forward with this process, we will need to provide information about the number of LCSWs in NJ who would choose to become Medicaid providers and the estimated number of Medicaid clients who would be served by these providers.

If you are an LCSW in NJ or are working towards your LCSW, please take a moment to complete this important survey to assist us in gathering the required information. You can access the survey here.
Renew Social Work License/Certification
Do not upload CE documentation!
The Division of Consumer Affairs has mailed all license and certification renewal notices for NJ social workers.

If you are a NJ LCSW, LSW or CSW you should have received your renewal notice. If you have not yet received a renewal notice, click here for instructions on how to renew without your notice.

Do NOT send or upload CE documents when you renew. Although there is a place to upload documents on the renewal page, the Board does not want them at this time.

The renewal deadline is August 31, 2018.
For information on renewal, CE requirements and where to find additional CEU programs, click here.

ADVOCACY/TAKE ACTION
Support Improvements to NJ's Family Leave Insurance Program

NASW-NJ continues to work with the NJ Time to Care Coalition to bring needed improvements to our state's Family Leave Insurance program that will allow more workers to access the program.

Have you needed time to care for family or will you need it soon? The Coalition is looking for people who can share their stories about the need for family leave. Email Dena at Time to Care to discuss how you can add your story to the Time to Care Coalition StoryBank. Your personal story can provide a powerful reason for legislators to act on this bill and ensure everyone who needs paid time to care for family can access it!

You can also sign this letter urging the Legislature to act to improve NJ's paid family leave program.
Take Action to Stop the 2020 Census Citizenship Question

NASW opposes the inclusion of a citizenship question on the 2020 Census. Such a question will depress response rates, particularly among immigrant communities and communities of color. That, in turn, will diminish political representation, from city councils and school boards to state legislatures and all the way up to Congress. It will mean less funding for communities that need it most for education, nutrition, housing and health care, because the resources these programs get depends on an accurate count.

You can leave a public comment urging that the Citizenship question not be included and that the 2020 Census be conducted in a fair, professional, and nonpartisan manner. The comment deadline is August 7.
Guidance on New Duty to Warn and Protect Requirements

Governor Murphy signed into law legislation that will require health care professionals, including social workers, to help keep firearms away from clients who may harm themselves or others. The new law strengthens existing Duty to Warn or Protect law and requires clinicians to notify local police if a client makes a credible threat of violence, or is deemed to be a threat of violence, against themselves or others.

We've prepared a Tip Sheet to help social workers understand the new reporting requirements. The information is also available under the "Clinical SW" drop-down on our Website.
