Letter from the President
Dear Friends of The Rep,
The month of June is always an exciting time here at the theatre. Our 85th season of MainStage shows is wrapping up with the delightful Broadway musical,
Sweet Charity, a Tony Award-winning hit featuring a book by Neil Simon and choreography inspired by Bob Fosse. This high energy show opens today, June 1st, and closes Sunday, June 17th.
June is also a time to celebrate our humble beginnings, for it was on June 8, 1933 - at the height of the Great Depression - that our "little theatre" was officially born with a production of Ibsen's
A Doll's House. To commemorate The Rep's 85th birthday this year, we invite you to attend the
Sweet Charity performance on Friday, June 8th and have some cake and refreshments with us in the lobby! We'll also be highlighting various moments from the past 85 years on our lobby TV and social media throughout the month of June.
A birthday wouldn't be complete without a gift though, so we also want to invite you to participate in our
85th Birthday Trivia Contest, open to the public the entire month of June. There will be a few prizes for the highest scorers, including a Platinum Season Subscription for the 1st place winner!
Whether you win or not, we hope you have fun with this challenge!
One of the core components of our mission is to educate and this truly takes center stage in June with kids of all ages flooding into our theatre for summer camps and musical productions. Our week long camps take place in June and July and are filling up quickly, so don't wait too long to register. They include "From Big Screen to Broadway" from June 25-29; "Broadway: Best of the West End" from July 16-20; and "Creating Theatre: Onstage/Offstage/Backstage" from July 23-27.
We also have two summer Young Rep musicals to look forward to:
Heathers the Musical (High School Edition)
, July 12-15; and
Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr.
, August 2-5.
If you like all that's happening at The Rep, would you consider supporting these efforts with a sponsorship for our 2018-2019 season? Season and show sponsorships play a vital role in helping us to fulfill our mission to educate, entertain and serve the area, creating vibrant community through live theatre. Whether it be a $25 donation or a $5,000 donation, I hope you'll consider this opportunity to play a larger role in helping to advance the performance arts in the Toledo area.
Whatever your involvement has been with The Rep this past season, whether it be as a patron, actor, crew member, instructor, staff, volunteer, or financial supporter, thank you as always for being a part of our family!
President, Toledo Repertoire Theatre

See, it literally pays to visit, follow and subscribe to the Toledo Rep! So what are you waiting for? Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, sign up to receive email announcements from us, including The REPorter, or purchase tickets to one of our many shows!

The Heathers are the hottest, cruelest, most ruthless clique in all of Ohio, but before Veronica can get comfortable atop the high school food chain, she falls in love with the dangerously handsome new kid J.D. When Heather Chandler, the Almighty, kicks her out of the group, Veronica and J.D. decide to put the Heathers in their place-six feet under. The New York Times calls this hilarious, heartfelt, and homicidal new musical "a rowdy guilty pleasure," and Variety raves, "

Toledo Rep Stages 'Charity' in Honor of 85th Birthday
The Toledo Repertoire Theatre on Friday stages the first of nine performances of the flamboyant musical
Sweet Charity - and celebrates its 85th year June 8 with some birthday cake.
Sweet Charity has been around a long time, but is it a classic musical? The Toledo Repertoire Theatre's artistic director Dave DeChristopher says it is.
"Like another big Bob Fosse musical,
Chicago
,
Sweet Charity
was a solid hit in its first production but not a blockbuster. In 1966,
Sweet Charity
was overshadowed by
Man of La Mancha
just as
Chicago
took a back seat to
A Chorus Line
in 1975. But both shows proved to be ahead of their times, flourishing in subsequent Broadway revivals. (The current revival of
Chicago
has played on Broadway for more than 20 years, and is the second-longest run ever ... and still going.)
The Rep plans to celebrate the 85th anniversary on June 8 and beyond.
The Rep's 85th season has been something to celebrate. "We had a variety of award-winning plays and musicals grace our stage, including several area premieres. We've had strong support from our patrons and donors, and also been able to develop a number of new partnerships with local businesses, schools, and nonprofits.
"Our education program continues to expand, with an increasing demand for theater classes for youths and adults, from acting, singing, and dancing to improv and technical theater.
"The Rep has been a cornerstone of Toledo's cultural identity for the past 85 years. With a mission to entertain, educate, and serve, we will continue to strive to be a leader in artistic excellence by creating a vibrant community through live theater for many years to come," McAnall said.
TOLEDO CITY PAPER
How Sweet It Is: Classic 'Sweet Charity' at The Rep
One of the most enduring - and endearing - characters in musical history, her sweet disposition and eternal optimism has resonated with audiences for over 50 years. And soon, Charity will return to a Glass City stage.
The classic 1966 musical
Sweet Charity
- written by Neil Simon and originally directed and choreographed by the legendary Bob Fosse - will be staged at the
Toledo Repertoire Theatre
, beginning June 1 for a three week run.

Elaborate Theater Sets Begin With a Tiny Replica
Today, scale set models are built for Toledo Repertoire Theatre by several local set designers.
Paul Alday, who holds a master's degree in scenic design from Eastern Michigan University, designed the sets for The Rep's productions of
The Taming of the Shrew
and
Moliere's Tartuffe
in 2015,
Of Mice and Men
in 2017, and this season's production of
Photograph 51
.
For The Rep's production of
Photograph 51, the story of British scientist Rosalind Franklin and her key role in the discovery of the structure of DNA in the 1950s, lots of research went into the time period. "We had to nail it down to a specific series of months of the year, so the research I did came down to what was happening in those months," Alday said. "In
Photograph 51, events are based on actual historical events, so I took into consideration the date that things happened and how this impacted the environment. For example, the events in the play took place shortly after a World War II German bomb was dropped on King's College, so I incorporated shattered plaster on the columns to symbolize the reconstruction of the college."
The play was set in King's College London in a basement research room. Alday obtained photos of the actual building and the room the scientists worked in and measured everything down to the size of the crown molding on the ceiling. "I like to create what I like to call play-grounds; the directors appreciate having options so they can play with them and see what their actors will look like on the set and things of that nature. I give them lots of options and negotiate what the set will look like from there. It really helps to keep the set designer and director on the same page."

"Playmaking 101" Student Showcase
On Saturday, May 12th, the amazing students from our Young Rep Ed Spring Session, "Playmaking 101" (Ages 7-16) showcased what they had been up to for the past eight weeks.
In this session, students were able to specialize in one of two areas: Performance or Technical Design.
Students learned fundamental theatre and performance skills while getting a hands-on, real-world understanding and experience of what it actually takes to stage and run a production.
Our students partici
pated in devised theatre, frequently called collective creation, a method of theatre in which the script or performance originates from collaborative, often improvisatory work by a performing ensemble. Our young actors were tasked with telling the story of what happened to fairytale characters after the "happily ever after".
