2019 Chamber Board nominations deadline

2019 Board of Directors of the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce. Nominations close Thurs, July 26 at 12 pm. Representing Greater Victoria's business community, The Chamber Board is one of the most influential community boards in the region.

Homeless count provides data to help tackle pervasive problem
There is more data to help policy makers address the issue of homelessness in our region. The
2018 Greater Victoria Point-in-Time Count was done on March 15 and the
results were made public yesterday. This year's count was more thorough than ones done in the past, with a greater number of volunteers reaching out to survey the homeless. As well, an event targeting the "hidden homeless" helped shine a light on youth who are hard to count because they live transient lives staying with friends.
"We especially wish to acknowledge those who participated in the survey and had the courage to share their stories with us," she said. "It is with this level of collaboration and dedication that we will see an end to homelessness in the region."
The Chamber identified
Safe Communities as an advocacy priorities for 2018. Chamber members are increasingly concerned Greater Victoria is experiencing growing disruption on its streets due to the volume of people with mental health, substance abuse and addiction problems, which can lead to homelessness, anti-social and criminal behavior.
The survey shows that indigenous people, who make up 4.7% of the region's population, account for 33% of the homeless. Another notable finding is that 41% of respondents experienced homelessness before the age of 18.
On a positive note, compared to the previous count, more people reported they were able to access shelters and transitional housing, and fewer people, 158, were found living without any shelter.
The Point-in-Time count was conducted by the
Capital Regional District, the Community Social Planning Council and the GVCTEH.

Chief Constable Del Manak, Cst. Glenn Foley and PSD Zender

Service Dogs (PSD), Havoc and Zender, were "sworn in" by
Chief Constable Del Manak at the July meeting of the Victoria and Esquimalt Police Board. Both PSDs graduated from their General Duty Canine Course this year, which trained them in tracking, searching buildings, locating evidence, searching compounds, and being obedient. Watch them get "sworn in"

Two-year-old Havoc is a male purebred German Shepherd that came to VicPD via Germany. PSD Havoc's human partner is Cst. Calvin Ewer. Cst. Ewer currently handles two police service dogs; PSD Maverick, a three year old chocolate lab who is trained in explosive detection (and is one of two explosive detection canines in the VicPD K9 Unit), and PSD Havoc.
PSD Zender is a purebred male German Shepherd who is two-and-a-half years old and from California. PSD Zender's human partner is Cst. Glenn Foley. A VicPD constable since 2015, Cst. Foley served in the Patrol division before coming to the K9 section.
Both PSDs will be further trained in drug/firearm detection later this year.

Using public-sector procurement to meet community goals
The
City of Victoria is part of a two-year project aiming to help Island communities implement strategic procurement. The Island Coastal Economic Trust (ICET), created by the provincial government 11 years ago, has leveraged more than $270 million in new investment on the Island over that time.
A new ICET Community Benefit Hub, announced last week, is designed to help Island and Sunshine Coast communities meet community goals through public-sector investment.
As an example, a community might have a strategic goal of increased Indigenous or youth employment or providing more training for local apprentices in Red Seal careers,
ICET's news release states.
"Local governments understand the impact that their purchasing can have but needed support and expertise to create the policies and frameworks needed to implement strategic local purchasing," said Duncan Mayor Phil Kent, who chairs ICET. "This project will build those tools and templates, ensure best practices are shared and also provide outreach and training to the supply side, ensuring readiness on both sides of the procurement equation."

RRU partners to support parks and conservation
A joint proposal prepared by
Royal Roads University, Mount Royal University and York University has resulted in the creation of the
Canadian Parks Collective for Innovation and Leadership (CPCIL). The collective is a response to a 2017 invitation from the Canadian Parks Council to more than 40 academic institutions to propose research-based approaches to support parks and protected areas professionals. The CPCIL will launch four programs for mid-career and emerging leaders from CPC member park agencies and partners over the next year. The Parks Leadership Development Program will be offered twice a year for 25 participants.

Saanich approves $250 million Nigel Valley mega-project
A major redevelopment of Saanich's
 "emerging core" would bring about five to six years of construction and create 796 units of social housing units in place of the 186 in the area now.
The project covers nine acres of 1970s-era buildings that are owned and operated by five agencies providing housing and care for seniors, families, adults with developmental and physical disabilities and adults recovering from mental illness.

SD61 looks to add child care spaces
The Greater Victoria School District is looking to add to the 1,000 child-care spaces that it already offers. The school district hopes to take advantage of the BC Government's promise to add 22,000 new child-care spaces across the province over the next three years.
The Province announced that it would contribute $221 million for new spaces. SD61 has a number of options for implementing child care, such as modular learning studios (portables) or incorporating spaces into renovations being done at schools such as Vic High.
