As the 3-day weekend and summer weather approaches, Bellingham Whatcom County Tourism has joined forces with more than 50 organizations throughout Washington State in a Recreate Responsibly Coalition to provide practical advice for enjoying outdoor recreation during the COVID-19 pandemic, while limiting the spread of the virus and ensuring that our public lands stay open.

Governor Issues additional guidance
for outdoor recreation in Phase 1 and Phase 2
Gov. Jay Inslee has issued guidance clarifying Phase 1 outdoor recreation requirements, and set forth outdoor recreation guidance for Phase 2.
Through the Washington "Safe Start" plan, more businesses and activities will re-open in phases, with adequate safety and health standards in place. Each phase will be at least three weeks.

Communicate Phases to Customers
What's happening in which "Phase" seems to be getting confusing these days. And the Phases vary from county to county. Whatcom County is currently in Phase 1.
We have created the following phase by phase graphics based on the Governor's guidance to indicate our current status to visitors, as well as locals. Many of our local businesses including restaurants and retail can open in a limited capacity in Phase 2, and Governor Inslee has issued re-opening guidance for many sectors. But consumers are still nervous.
We want to help you tell your story, Please tell us what special messages we can share about how you are changing your business operations to prepare to re-open and to instill customer confidence. Will you open with special hours? Are you making physical changes to your space? Are you implementing new policies?

Bellingham and Whatcom County are known for their incredible summer beauty. So when the weather is sunny, I like to appreciate the diverse, thought-provoking outdoor art, for free, at my own pace.
The art collections below range from the tiniest works to epic grandeur. Part of their charm is their placement in the surrounding landscape and because they're outside, you can see them almost any time and usually without a crowd.

Sustainable Connections, located in Bellingham Washington, is hosting a virtual watch party of the film Wasted! The Story of Food Waste, Thursday, June 4 to highlight the Food Recovery Program.
Wasted! The Story of Food Waste follows chef-heroes like the late Anthony Bourdain as they explore how reducing food waste can lead to new ways of using more food, feeding more people, and curbing environmental damage. The virtual watch party will provide a free, at-home screening of the film to viewers who register online through the Sustainable Connections website.

Every new leader of an organization expects challenges - just not the ones posed by a global pandemic that postponed its primary annual event and canceled many others.
However, Chris Pickering looks forward to happier days as chief executive officer of the
Northwest Washington Fair
in Lynden, Washington
. Pickering recently was appointed CEO by the fair's board to succeed Jim Baron, who served more than 16 years as the fair's manager.

Bellingham Parks and Recreation is thrilled to announce that ¾ of a mile of new limestone trails in Cordata Park will be open to the public beginning May 20, 2020, exactly one year after construction began May 20, 2019. Although no onsite parking is available at this time, the public can access the park trails via the pedestrian entrances from the Cordata Parkway sidewalk.
The park is located on the east side of Cordata Parkway between Stuart and Horton Roads, in the Cordata Neighborhood. The nearest on-street parking is located on Stuart Road, .2 mile south of the park.

The health and safety of employees, staff, team members, guests, and Whatcom County
community remains a top priority of Silver Reef Casino Resort
as it begins the reopening process on May 21st with a soft opening for Lummi Nation Tribal members, the general public reopening will begin on the 22nd. The extended temporary closure was part of the public solution to contain COVID-19."The closure of Silver Reef Casino Resort has come at a tremendous price for our employees that we had to furlough." said Marty Sauvage, CEO of Silver Reef Casino Resort. "We are pleased to be able to bring many of them back to work under the safest possible conditions."
