FGDC Seeks Nominations for National Geospatial Advisory Committee
The United States Department of the Interior and the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) are seeking nominations for appointment to the National Geospatial Advisory Committee (NGAC). The NGAC provides advice and recommendations to the Secretary of the Interior through the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) related to management of Federal geospatial programs, development of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure, and the implementation of Office of Management and Budget Circular A-16 and Executive Order 12906. The NGAC reviews and comments on geospatial policy and management issues and provides a forum for views of non-Federal stakeholders in the geospatial community.
Nominations for appointment to the NGAC should be submitted by August 27, 2018. Nominations may come from employers, associations, professional organizations, or other geospatial organizations. Nominations should include a resume providing an adequate description of the nominee's qualifications, including information that would enable the Department of the Interior to make an informed decision regarding meeting the membership requirements of the Committee and permit the Department of the Interior to contact a potential member. Nominees are strongly encouraged to include supporting letters from constituents, trade associations (like URISA), alliances, and/or other organizations that indicate the support by a meaningful constituency for the nominee.

GIS Leadership Academy - Upcoming Programs in Austin, Raleigh and (likely) Toronto!
We're hosting the URISA GIS Leadership Academy in Salt Lake City this week. It's a packed house with participants from as far away as Australia, Nigeria and Hawaii! We asked the SLC attendees why they chose to attend. Some of the responses:
- It seems like a program that will make me a better and more efficient GIS leader. It is also one of the only programs I could find that ties in management with GIS.
- URISA has been a positive influence in my career - in particular, the conferences have been superb.
- I heard it was a 'transformation' from several past attendees.
- With so much focus on technical proficiency these days, I saw the Leadership Academy as a way to sharpen and improve my base leadership skills, an important facet of my position that tends to get overlooked.
- I believe there is a need in my region/agency for better GIS leadership and I would like to be the one to implement change for the better
- Very excited to find a leadership course specific to GIS professionals.
- Looks like the best next step for professional development focused on program and project management in the GIS industry.
- I have been in my current supervisory role for the last 3 years but I met a graduate of the ULA at the GIS-Pro conference in Jacksonville last October and after speaking to her I decided that I owed it to my staff to become a better GIS Supervisor.
The Academy has enjoyed steady and enthusiastic participation since it was first presented in 2007. Since then, more than 700 GIS professionals have attended the specialized five-day GIS leadership and management training program.
Each GLA includes numerous interactive exercises, team-building tools, and opportunities t
o delve into topics in a way you cannot do at a large conference. Attendance is limited in size to encourage such interaction with each event capped at about 50 participants.
To meet demand, for the first time, URISA will host the GIS Leadership Academy three times in one calendar year. We'll be in Austin, Texas during the week of December 3, 2018. Another great venue in a cool city.
Planning ahead? In 2019, we'll be in Raleigh, North Carolina during the week of May 20-24, 2019 (just confirmed) and likely in Toronto, Ontario in August 2019 (contract pending).
