New Jersey Coach Connect
June 2018

From the ICF-NJ President

Hello fellow ICF-NJ coaches!

"You make a living by what you get, but you make a life by what you give." - Winston Churchill

I'm looking forward to summer, as I imagine you are too. Summertime offers a great opportunity to relax, soak up some sun, and have fun. It's also a great chance to use your time productively and give back to your community.

For my business, I use the summer to both reflect on my accomplishments during the first part of the year and to plan for the remainder of the year.

Our ICF-NJ board does something similar: We'll be gathering in mid-June to review the goals we've reached so far, and all the things we wish to accomplish as an organization by year's end.

That's where you all come in.

As you know, we're a member-driven organization. Nothing gets accomplished without the mighty hands and hearts of our volunteers.
To fulfill our mission and meet our goals, we need your help.

Here are just a few of our needs. You may be surprised by how little time we need. But if you can volunteer, you'll be helping your board and Chapter immensely. So please let us know if you have interest or expertise in the areas below. (All times are approximate):
  • Technology: Looking for team members who can help us update and launch our new website. One to two hours per week.

  • Treasury: We seek a volunteer with basic finance knowledge and who keeps books in your own business. One to two hours per week.

  • Operations: If you're good at organizing and building management processes, we're looking for someone to help us! Short term project, two to four hours per week for one month.

  • Communications/Social Media: Do you like to write or edit? Are you good with social media? One to two hours per week.

  • Education & Professional Development: We seek help with overall planning, preparing and implementing our in-person events and webinars. One to two hours per week.

  • Sponsorship: Are you good at identifying and cultivating relationships with organizations who can bring value added services to our membership as Sponsors/Advertisers? Then we need you! One to two hours a month.

  • Board Positions: Are you interested in playing a role in defining and implementing the future of ICF-NJ? Would you like to hear more about how fulfilling it can be to serve the members of our coaching community via your leadership?

Providing value to our coach community is our number-one priority. We can only do so with the help of you, our members. If you agree, and wish to help our community thrive and flourish, please contact me at [email protected].

Here's to a wonderful summer!

Greetings from Your Director of
Community Programs

Introducing the ICF-NJ Virtual
Community Group!

Sometimes things don't go according to plan. Due to a glitch with Zoom, we were unable to start the new ICF-NJ Virtual Community group in May. But we're excited to start it in June!

The topic will be "Five Resolutions for Success in Your Coaching Business."

This new virtual group is targeted to those people who do not currently live near an in-person community group. But even if you belong to another group, ALL are encouraged and welcome to join. You can participate in as many community groups as you'd like, and this virtual
group is a way to do so from the comfort of your own home. The group will be led by three facilitators who'll rotate their duties: Lynne Roe, Marc Strano, and Regan Cohen Elliott.

The virtual community group sessions will be held the second Tuesday of every month from 11:00 am through 12:15 pm.
Please join us for the first session on Tuesday, June 12!

And please mark your calendars for future sessions: July 10, August 14, September 11, October 9, November 13, and December 11, 2018.

As with all community groups, there is no charge. This is an informal way to network, continue your development as a coach, and address challenges you may have. You do not need to be an ICF-NJ member yet to participate, but we hope to have you join as a member soon.

So come join us! Here are the links to join:

International Coaching Week Was a Big Success!

The week of May 7-13 was International Coaching Week, and ICF-NJ partnered with the Girl Scout Heart of New Jersey to celebrate.

First, we had a special orientation session in April for those coaches who volunteered to participate in helping the Girl Scouts with pro-bono coaching. On May 7, we had a group chat session with Girl Scout staff and leaders, where we showcased what ICF is and the types of help our coaches provide their clients. During the week, volunteer coaches met with 11 Girl Scout leaders to help them with a specific challenge or goal.

Early feedback is that the sessions were meaningful and helpful. Thank you to all who participated to make this week a great success, including Barbara Abadi, Cecile Blin, Andrea Harvey, Jeannette Iglesias, Brooke Manino, Tina Mertel, Lynn Schaber, Rosanne Scriff, and Marc Strano. You were all a big help in reserving time to coach, and for most, doing laser coaching. We couldn't have done it without you!

" Mindful Awareness Practice for a Coaching Culture
"

"An opportunity to learn, experience, and understand what mindfulness is and how to develop it."

These days we hear a lot about this thing called "mindfulness" and how beneficial it can be for our well-being and happiness. It's almost too easy for us to file this advice under the category of "things I know I should be doing" or "things I'll someday get around to" or "things I wish I were better at."

The good news is that mindfulness practice, rather than being some aspirational quality we hope to acquire in some distant future, is a set of skills we can all develop right in the midst of our busy lives. We can start (or restart) this practice at any time, using everyday experience in interaction with others, as well as when alone.

In this experiential, interactive workshop on mindful awareness practice, we will explore:
  • Practices you can begin to use right away in conversation with others: at work or at home.
  • Key concepts about the mind that will help you understand your experience better and support you in coaching yourself to develop these skills.*
  • Highlights from research in the neuroscience and cognitive science fields that help to explain how mindfulness practice impacts our physiology and internal experience.
  • An introduction to mindfulness meditation.
* After you register for the workshop, you will receive an email with some pre-reading about these concepts.

Why I'm a Member of ICF-NJ

Being part of the New Jersey Chapter of ICF has always been a blessing.

Initially the Chapter was my new professional family in America, as I had moved to New Jersey from France with my family in 1997. Then it became a support group for me, as I became certified after going to evening tele-classes with Corporate Coach U.

Ultimately, I decided to serve this community that had welcomed me with open arms. I had a lot of fun organizing special events, helping people connect with one another, and then becoming Chapter President. Deep down, I'm a pioneer, so being part of an emerging community and helping it grow was really joyful. And yes, it's a bit of work too.

These formative years played a big role in helping me help others play bigger, live bigger, and give back bigger. They helped me create Altruistic Odyssey, a 501c3 charity organization that serves underserved cultures in Nepal. (I'm a Nepal aficionado, and have taken clients on coaching treks there for the past eight years.)

Today, I live in Jackson Heights, Queens, in the middle of a cross-cultural environment that fits my belief system as a Global Citizen. I split my life between New York, Kathmandu, and occasionally France, my birth country.

Serving the coaching profession has been an honor and a joy. I'm very grateful for these years and for being part of the ICF-NJ community.

Wishing all the Chapter members a long and happy life!
