First day of school for Grades 1-8!

From the Desk of

Welcome back! I am so happy to begin this fantastic year with all of you! On Tuesday, I sent out an insider's look at our first day of school opening ceremony and our theme of the year: #akibacommUNITY. We are focused on continuing to build our Akiba-Schechter community and committed to celebrating all that unifies us. With the theme introduced, I wanted to share an effort that we worked on last year and continue to work on.

The effort began last summer when I asked the Board: What is our "Why?" Why do we do what we do? That began a deep exploration with the Board, the administration, the staff, parents and students to articulate what has made our school so wonderful all these years. This summer, the administration took all the documents and research we gathered to formulate our Core Values based on the four themes that emerged from the voices of our community.

Following, I give you an overview of our Core Values that we are still working on. They are what guide us daily as well as what we strive for when we reflect on how we can do better. I welcome your thoughts and any input on what makes Akiba-Schechter special to you if it is not presented in these values:

#1 Teach Children, Not Subjects

This speaks to our approach to the teaching and learning. We strive for academic excellence in both Judaic and General Studies with a goal of our students learning because of a love of learning. This is accomplished by starting with the child first and caring about each child.

#2 Joyful Judaism

This speaks to our value in promoting a positive relationship with Judaism. We strive to create positive Jewish experiences in and out of the classroom where a strong Jewish identity is built, a love and connection to the learning of Torah occurs, joyful performance of Mitzvot (Jewish commandments) and Chessed (acts of kindness) is created, and where a love and positive relationship with Israel and its people are made.

#3 Jewish Unity

This speaks to our value, appreciation, and respect for the many different Jews that make up the Jewish people. We believe we are stronger together than apart. We strive to promote Jewish community, celebrate individual spirituality and honor our shared heritage, commitment to mitzvot and Halacha (Jewish law), strong connection with the land, state and people of Israel and, above all, the beauty of each and every Jew.

#4 Respect for All Humanity

This speaks to our value, love, and respect for Humanity and creation. We believe everyone was created in the image of G-d and has inherent holiness. We strive to teach and model respect for all individuals, our school, and the world.

Of course, our values are Jewish values and we can't take credit where it is not due. Below are each of the values and a Jewish source that speaks to them.

Shabbat Shalom!

Head of School

With this year's theme of commUNITY, we had a Shabbat Assembly today (note the predominance of blue #akibacommUNITY t-shirts!), singing together to new music teacher Shimmy Castle's accompaniment on the guitar. Rabbi Cohen spoke about the importance of slowing down and being together in the moment.

8 Questions for an 8th Grader: Zev Faier
Zev Faier (photo credit: Jennifer Frankfurter)
This year we will feature an 8th grader in each Kibitzer; Zev Faier makes the start as he just had his Bar Mitzvah (Mazal tov to Zev and his family!)
  1. Since when have you been at Akiba (grade or year)? Since Kindergarten.
  2. What neighborhood are you from? I live in Lakeview.
  3. Is being an 8th grader different from your previous grades at Akiba? Being in eighth grade doesn't change anything.
  4. What is your favorite subject at Akiba and why? My favorite subject is Science because I like the hands on projects like the electrified dollhouse.
  5. What do you think is special about Akiba? I think Akiba is special because the teachers get to work with the kids one on one, and I like that.
  6. What did you learn from recently having your Bar Mitzvah? I learned that it is very fun to learn to lain Torah.
  7. When you're not at school or doing homework, what do you like to do? I like to use the Internet.
  8. Do you have any idea yet of what you want to be when you grow up? No, I don't.
