GW Takes a Lead in Using Social Media to
Advance Cardiac Medicine
The GW Heart & Vascular Institute has been an innovator in novel educational strategies for cardiovascular professionals and the use of digital health technologies to facilitate enhanced clinical care. A recent development in physician-to-physician information sharing has been the utilization of social media. Social media use has risen significantly with currently over 70% of Americans utilizing this platform. According to a survey by cardiology news site, TCTMD, 30% of cardiovascular professionals who responded to the survey said they use Twitter for "professional reasons as an opportunity to learn about new research, network with experts, share opinions, and engage in conversations and debates."
Dr. Andrew D. Choi, GW's Co-Director of Cardiac CT and MRI and Journal of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (JCCT) Editorial Board member (Social Media) discussed social media with TCTMD, in a feature article, "Keeping Up With Cardiology: Old-School Learning Versus the Twittersphere." According to Dr. Choi, "We have amazing media and global technology that allows us to put all of this information in the palm of your hand. Social media is a way for that busy physician...to be able to track very, very quickly what he or she thinks are the most important areas of research interest to his daily work...and then take a deep dive." Dr. Choi's leadership at the recent Society of Cardiac CT Scientific Sessions helped to generate over 17 million global digital impressions and at JCCT has enabled research dissemination in over 50 countries worldwide through social media.
Digital technologies such as social media are expected to continue to enable the rapid advancement of best practices for professionals in cardiovascular care.

Dr. Joseph Krepp Joins GW Cardiology Faculty
Joseph Krepp, MD, is our new Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at the GW School of Medicine & Health Sciences. Dr. Krepp earned his undergraduate degree from The George Washington University and his Medical Degree from Stony Brook University School of Medicine. He completed a three-year residency in internal medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital and subsequently completed a three-year cardiology fellowship, which included a chief year at Georgetown University. Dr. Krepp completed a second fellowship in advanced echocardiography at New York Presbyterian Hospital, where he trained under Rebecca Hahn, MD, a leading expert on echocardiography and valvular disease. Dr. Krepp developed expertise on cardiac imaging for people with percutaneous mitral valve replacement.
Dr. Krepp is published in more than ten industry publications and has special interests in Valvular Heart Disease, Structural Heart Disease, Echocardiography, Interventional Echocardiography and Three Dimensional Echocardiography.

GW Cardiologists Train Visiting
Maria Pia del Corral has been training as an advanced trainee in cardiology and arrhythmology at University of Milano, IRCCS Policlinico San Donato, in Italy. This year she joins The George Washington University's Division of Cardiology as our international electrophysiology research scholar under the supervision of Dr. Mercader. Her research project is in the field of cardiac resynchronization therapy and she will be collaborating with Drs. Mercader, Tracy, Solomon, and Panjrath. She is also working with Dr. Mercader and GW's Renal Division assessing the burden of cardiac arrhythmias in patients with end stage renal disease.
