Meeting Recap
The BVR Social Justice Retreat is happening next Friday, January 29, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. This retreat will be a virtual opportunity for Middle School students to engage in conversations about identity and privilege in relation to social justice topics in a safe and welcoming space. This year's theme will focus on wellness and self-care practices and their relationship to identity work and social justice. During the workshops, our hope is facilitators support the students to work together to share stories, acknowledge differences, and find commonalities—with the aim to build a deeper, more inclusive and committed community. Students received an email with the link to sign up.
The virtual AISNE Students of Color Conference is Saturday, February 6 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. A form was shared at MS Meeting for students to sign up; students can see Ms. Smith with any questions.
The second semester begins Monday! Students who took Visual Art for Semester 1 will now take Theater Art and vice versa. We’ve rearranged some of our class blocks so everyone has at least one class in person when they are on campus. Students were reminded to check their email each morning to see their new schedules.
Giselle Figueroa '27 talked about the 6th grade Community Action Leader (CALs) event that happened Tuesday. Some of the 6th grade CALs, including Giselle, Zoey Steinberg, Koko Vandernoot, Allie Martin, and Jacqueline Howvitz, made Birthday Wishes packages for children who for a variety of reasons may not be able to afford to have a party.
Ms. Jain announced that 8th graders will hear from a guest speaker on Monday at 8 a.m. Cacike Jorge Baracutei Estévez, Head Chief of the Higuayagua Taíno people of the Caribbean, will be speaking about how museum exhibits portray colonialism. As part of the 8th grade global history curriculum, students are learning about colonialism and will think critically about the role museums play in perpetuating or disrupting colonial practices.
