August 2018
President's Message
Ahhh, August, the smell of horse road apples in the air (there is a story behind this and you will have to ask me to find out), I must be on Mackinac Island at the Mid Summer Conference. While driving around the country side the bean crops are beginning to turn yellow. Soon we will be dodging fallen sugar beats. The fall sports seasons are beginning to ramp up and golf is starting to ramp down. Summer is leaving us too soon.
August was the month of our 75th Mid Summer Conference. Again, this year it was shared with the AGC, our 15th together. I hope you had the opportunity to join us this special year. Along with the normal activities there were a few special adds this year, a moonlight cruise with Fireworks, Dueling Pianos and a Time Capsule event (to be opened in 25 years). Matt Guinta, AIA was placed in charge of the opening of the time capsule when the time has arrived. All events were excellent. A person can never pass up the cocktail receptions on the front porch with one of the most breathtaking views in Michigan. Weather was Grand and so was the event.

As addressed in last month’s news letter, AIA Michigan had a proposed Bylaw Amendment to Change how AIA MI Directors are elected to the board. This change now allows the board to complete its roster reporting to national in a timely fashion. The Amendment was passed by a large amount. In the very near future you should be receiving a voting ballot to select your components (and only yours) representative to the Michigan Board. Please take the time to cast your votes.

Most importantly in September our sponsored Senate Bill 465 is going before the representative for a vote. This is a bill that will allow Architects and Engineers to file liens against a property for unpaid professional fees without the requirement of construction of that project. This bill is something that our AIA MI’s Government Affairs Committee has been pursuing for a number of years now.

SB 465 has already passed unanimously in the Senate. A hearing by the House Financial Services Committee is scheduled for September 5th at 10:30 AM. Short notice, but if you have ever worked with the State Government before they are not required to provide much notice. We need you to contact your representatives in support of this effort. If your representative is on the committee and you can attend the meeting, we need you there. The greater support the better. Having legislators seeing their constituents in a hearing goes a long way. Decisions are made by those who show up.

There is a list of legislative committee members that will be sent to you via email. If you have any questions or need additional information please call Steve Smith, AIA or Chuck Bultman, AIA, Co-Chairs of the AIA Government Affairs Committee. Please call AIA Michigan if you need their contact information.

I would like to close by congratulating Cathy Mosley, Hon. Aff. AIAMI on her nomination and election to the AIA CACE Vice Presidents position at its annual CACE meeting this month. Please take the time to wish her the best as she begins working (volunteering her time) nationally for our organization serving in the 2019-2020 position.

Yours in AIA,

Dan La Pan, AIA

Emerging Professionals Corner
Hello All –

& goodbye to summer. With August coming to and end, and September right around the corner, we’re officially falling into fall. Fall is notoriously as back to school time, and for those you Associate Members who may still be completing your degree requirements, good luck with your studios and classes in the upcoming semester – and for any of you AIA members who may teach, good luck to you too with your new class of students.

However, I want to take a minute to talk about another aspect of back to school. AIA National just recently launched a new initiative to shape school design policies. Anyone who has paid any amount of attention to the news over the past years knows why this is important, critical and relevant. This month, AIA issues the statement, “ Where We Stand: School Design & Student Safety (found here) that outlines the AIA’s commitment to improving school design policies.  The AIA is supporting this cause by dedicating resources and expertise to updating school design guidelines, supporting continuing education towards safe school design, striving toward making safe school design eligible for federal grants, and establishing a federal clearinghouse on school design.

I appreciate the AIA taking a strong stance on this issue, and I’m proud to see the profession stepping up to support this cause. In my work at a firm that regularly on higher education facilities, I’d love to see school safety and preparedness continue to grow to be a larger part of the design conversation, and I’m happy to have the AIA on our team in furthering this initiative.

If you want to do your part in supporting this initiative, sign the power of design” petition which will be delivered to elected officials at the local, state and federal levels.

Happy September – enjoy the upcoming cider, donuts, and pumpkin spice!

Best,
Sami Szeszulski, AIA
