From MIT Sloan | THINKING FORWARD
|
|
1. By multiple estimates, some 80% to 90% of data is unstructured — think text, video, audio, web server logs, and social media, among many other sources.
2. Most executives worldwide are out of touch with what it takes to lead effectively in the digital economy, according to a new study from MIT Sloan Management Review and Cognizant.
The report, “Leadership’s Digital Transformation: Leading Purposefully in an Era of Context Collapse,” is based on a global survey of more than 4,200 managers and executives in over 20 industries. Some 72% of respondents strongly agreed that it is very important that they work for an organization with a purpose they believe in, but a mere 25% strongly agreed that their organizations are as purpose-driven as their leaders believe them to be.
3. How did small business owners spend — and not spend — their own money in the early days of COVID-19? A new study could guide policymakers in drafting additional rescue measures as the pandemic persists, said Antoinette Schoar, one of the report’s co-authors and a professor at MIT Sloan.
To conduct their study, researchers created a dataset using anonymous JPMorgan Chase credit card and debit card transaction information between January 2019 and May 2020 from 380,532 small businesses and their respective owners.

Why Is It So Hard to Become a Data-Driven Company?
|
|
February 5, 2021
By Randy Bean
Thriving as a mainstream company today means being data driven. Companies that have lagged on this front have observed their data-driven competitors seize market share and make inroads into their customer base over the course of the past decade and pioneers like Amazon, Facebook, and Google develop dominant market valuations.
Now, mainstream Fortune 1000 companies are fighting back by investing heavily in data and AI initiatives to narrow the gap. For the third consecutive year, investment in data and AI initiatives has been nearly universal, with 99.0% of firms reporting investment in data and AI according to findings from a newly released executive survey from NewVantage Partners, a strategic advisory firm that I founded in 2001 to advise Fortune 1000 companies on data leadership issues.
But this year, despite growing investment, it appears most companies are struggling to maintain momentum.

PwC is once again proud to sponsor the MITCDOIQ Symposium. Each year we look forward to this event where the best and brightest minds gather to share perspectives and trends around the world of data. We chose to sponsor the symposium again this year as we are strong advocates of the CDO agenda, and we have seen firsthand the positive impacts the CDO can make on an organization's ability to execute their corporate vision. We are looking forward to seeing everyone virtually this year as we can continue to shape, build and grow the role of the CDO.
