Bruce and Jean Wyman
We recently sat down with Bruce and Jean Wyman, who and are actively involved with the Foundation as well as having a Donor Advised Fund with us. Both members of the Giving Circle of HOPE, and they focus their grant making locally.

Can you tell us about your experience with the Community Foundation? How did you get involved to create your fund?

We created our fund at the Community Foundation in order to allow for ease of making annual donations. Initially, we researched several other funds but felt most comfortable with the Community Foundation. The staff was warm and showed interest in how they could help us meet and expand our philanthropic goals.  Read More >>
Legacy giving through bequests allows donors to pass on more than just stuff and money at their death. It allows a way for donors to communicate their ethics and values to their heirs, as well as leave them a community improved by philanthropy. It allows successful business leaders to give back to the community where they made their wealth. It provides everyone the opportunity to shape our community's future in a positive way, and it's easier to do thank you think. The team at the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia has focused on inspiring local donors over the past year to create named funds that benefit all of Northern Virginia through the Founder's Society via simple current and planned gifts.

As the year winds down, be sure to include charitable giving in your plans. Visit our web site for more information on how to give smartly through beneficiary designations or call Eileen Ellsworth at 703-879-7635 for more information.
MEETOURSTAFFMEET OUR STAFF AND SUMMER INTERN
Jill Bach, Manager of Grants and Scholarships

Jill Bach recently returned to the Community Foundation as the new Manager of Grants and Scholarships.  She comes to us from Northern Virginia Family Service, where she served as a Donor Database Administrator.  Previous to that, Jill volunteered in the Community Foundation's office, assisting with a variety of projects. In her new role, Jill will be handling the day-to-day operations of the grants and scholarship cycles.

Amanda Bomfim,
Summer Intern
Amanda Bomfim is a graduate student at James Madison University pursuing a Masters in Public Administration. As an intern at the Foundation, Amanda's major responsibilities include assisting the coordination of the 2018 Raise the Region Gala, making data updates in the FIMS database, and updating The Opportunity Index.

"What I enjoy most about my internship are the people. Staff members have welcomed me with open arms and I am so grateful. They create a work environment that is not only supportive but a fun place to be. The work itself is beneficial to not only The Community Foundation but for myself as well. I am expanding my organization and communication skills, my ability to work cohesively in a group, my knowledge of how nonprofits are run, and my experience in organizing events. I know that this work will indirectly positively affect people the Foundation serves and that makes all the difference to me. This internship will definitely help me in my degree and my career because it will help guide me towards my goal of working in nonprofits."

September Innovation Breakfast: Reviving the Dream: Designing Technology for Social Wellbeing
September 13, 8 - 10:30 am
We are partnering with the WHEELS Global Foundation for this Innovation Breakfast Series event titled, "Reviving the Dream: Designing Technology for Social Wellbeing."   In the mid 20th Century, many believed emerging technologies would eradicate poverty, hunger, and sickness and build a more just and sustainable world.  Anything seemed possible! But in the intervening decades, technology took a sharp turn away from addressing social challenges. Today, that dream is being revived.  Across the globe, sustainable technologies are being developed and reimagined to help meet basic human needs, address social injustices, and create more balanced and prosperous communities. The WHEELS Global Foundation headquartered in Reston, VA, is on the forefront of this important work.  What is the opportunity for our community - for all communities -  to benefit, and what role does philanthropy play in promoting technology that advances social wellbeing?
