News from the Gilford Public Library!

Greetings!

Having a lively library near where you live is convenient . Being able to search the catalog online is convenient, as is being able to log in, renew books, make books requests, and more, all from home. We want using the library to be as accessible as we can. That’s why we have starting doing automatic renewals! If you have something due, it hasn’t been renewed before, nobody is waiting for it, and your card is in good shape, then it will be automatically renewed for the full checkout period! You can bring it back before then, of course. We’re hoping this helps people worry less about overdue books. Let us know what you think!

Book of the Week

This week’s Book of the Week is ‘Akin’ by Emma Donahue.

79-year-old retired professor Noah is about to take a trip to his estranged hometown of Nice, France, when he suddenly becomes the only surviving relative to 11-year-old Michael. Not willing to change his plans, the two of them begin the incredibly uncomfortable journey together. They learn about their troubling heritage, which seems to be the only thing they share as people. Emma is a tactful writer and it shows through, even if the premise has been seen before.

Nature Corner: Sounds of Late Summer by Wendy Oellers-Fulmer

One of the ubiquitous sounds of late Summer and early Fall is the resounding chorus of cricket chirps that fill the air.The males are usually the “serenaders”. A male will rub a scraper (ridge on his wing against a file (wrinkle) on his other wing. Varying tones will be elicited, dependent on how far the wrinkles are apart. But did you know that it’s true you can tell the temperature, by counting the chirps. To get an estimated Fahrenheit temperature, count the number of chirps in 15 seconds, then add 37.
