Resident Highlight - Dr. Edgar Fernandez

First-year resident, Edgar S. Fernandez, M.D., knew that the Miami Beach Gay Pride event was the perfect venue for the College of Medicine to promote its resident clinics, and to expand his interest in research, community health, and education. Approval and support were provided by the college's Office of Graduate Medical Education and Academic Affairs and Office for Diversity and Inclusion.

A Miami native, Dr. Fernandez was very familiar with the parade having attended for many years. Managing a booth at the multi-day event that attracts more than 200,000 was a new challenge. Dr. Fernandez became the director of FAU Medicine's presence and invited other residents and medical students to join him at the event. The Gay Pride event also served as an ideal site for his research study - exploring how HIV knowledge influences PrEP in both patients' adherence to the medication and their ability to obtain the drug from their physician. He reached out to Michael DeDonno, Ph.D.,  assistant professor of Educational Leadership & Research Methodology, who assisted with data collection.
