Our JOAD class continues to grow. Our newest Archer is just 7 years old and already shoots like a pro. Her name is Vivian and with her father’s help, she is working toward her junior membership. Frank is working hard to complete their membership requirements…now we just need to put a bow in his hands as well. They are a great bunch of kids and young adults and Vernie is doing a great job with them. Please stop by next time you see them at the range and give them some encouragement. Also, please keep in mind that when there is a Beginners or JOAD class in the education area, the broadhead pit will be closed. Safety First!!

Our beginners class continues to do quite well. We are trying to limit the class to no more than 12 for now but with some help, we could handle up to 20. If you would like to lend a hand and help train up some new archers, please contact me and I will find you a place. The classes are on most Saturday’s and they start at 10 am. We need help manning the front gate from 9:30 – 10:15 to let guests taking the class on the range and again after the class to let them out and we could always use a few experienced archers to help out with the beginners.

I would like to thank the members who donated arrows to the education program. If you have some kid friendly arrows that you are not using, please consider donating them to the club. That said, we have had a training bow and some arrows go missing from the clubhouse. If you borrowed some equipment, please return it as soon as possible.

Thank you,

· Next tournament work parties are October 12 and December 7.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS:

· On September 3, Oranco Flint Captain Jason Duysings resigned his position on the Board after 5+ years of volunteer service. Jason would like to thank all of our members and guest that helped make the Scalps and Skins a success year over year. If you see Jason around the range, please thank him for all he’s done around the range, from including some great “hunting shots” in our tournaments and our beautiful cook shacks in Bear Valley and Sniper Hill.

· Hunting season is here. Bill reminds everyone to tag your animal before you begin to dress it. Meat will spoil quickly in the heat so you want to open the animal up and cool it down as quickly as possible. You can also use black pepper and vinegar to keep the flies away.

· Current membership count: 381; Prospective members: 48 and counting

· Check out our website for proposed amendments to the By-laws (located under About OB > By Laws > Proposed Changes to the By-Laws – 4/17/19). We will likely vote on adopting these measures at the next meeting. Changes include: 1) Capital Project Implementation Process; 2) New preface language regarding fiduciary responsibly of the Board of Directors; 3) New language clarifying that prospective or past members wishing to join/rejoin Oranco Bowmen must complete the new member requirements (i.e., attend 2 club meeting and participate in 2 work parties).

Want to be informed or get involved? Our next club meeting is Tuesday, September 10th at 7pm in the club house. As a reminder, all prospective members need to attend 2 Club Meetings and participate in 2 work parties to become an Oranco member.

Club Meeting Minutes are available in a binder at the Club office or email Ob.Secretary@outlook.com for a copy. The Summary of Board/Member Actions from the last meeting are included below.

Hi Everyone,

Hope all is well and your hunting season is going well or is about to start,

Last month I reported that I would be going to San Francisco to shoot the one million BC 3-D shoot wow what a shoot. If you haven’t done this one you need to put it on your calendar. First thing that came to me was how nice the weather was and beautiful the range was with all it big trees, I guess this is how they came up with the scheme for prehistoric animals (Jurassic) It was a lot of hiking up and down hills with a small lake in the middle of their range which made it very nice to look at as you were shooting. Did I mention cool “weather” sorry just had to mention that a gain. Scoring was 11-10-8 with two arrows with the longest shoot being 101yards (Wooly mammoth). I finished 2-pionts out of second and I believe 12 out of first. Now this is where I tell everyone I should have won this tournament but I will tell you that I was not prepared for the easy 2-yard shoots that cost me the win as I should have known how to shoot those easy shoots.

So note: for next year practice shooting those birdie shots that cost me the win

Ok, let’s talk about this year’s summer league and thank a few people for taking rolls in helping to put this together. First thank you to Brad Belvedere for jumping in with set up brake down and being a good friend, I would also like to thank Mark Houston for also jumping in with set up brake down, food, registration and so many more things he did, Dave Bacon the guy behind the scenes as most of you now he is always working to improve our club with modem technology and grow membership with positive interaction thank you Dave, for always taking my call late at night and sending out my emails, keeping up our scores and posting them on a very timely manner.

Also would like to thank all those that came out and participated in our club league and help out with brake down, cooking at the BBQ and cleanup. It was truly a club effort

Thank you

PS. Side note:

This past weekend was opener for bird hunting and headed out to Arizona with a few of us from Oranco we loaded up our quads and went out to some of my favorite hunting grounds only to be shocked to see that our great hunting grounds have been sold to a foreign country who has decided to keep us off our hunting grounds and make it tough on hunters to have access to the desert. We were able to still find are way to some of my favorite hunting areas and shoot our limits each day and enjoy each other’s company.

If you guys or gals have any questions for me or would like to see a winter league please drop me a line or a phone call.

Thanks for reading this newsletter!

Great Job Chris Stout!

I recently had the privilege to shoot in the USA National Outdoor Championships in Dublin, Ohio.

More than 560 people attended the event. The target field was massive, covering over a quarter of a mile. With 98 percent humidity and varying winds, it proved to be very challenging. It was a three-day event. The first two days were qualification rounds of 72 arrows each day. After each of the first two days, and few bad ends, I was sitting in 9th position. I managed to pull things together for the last day of elimination rounds. I made it to the quarter finals where I ran into the #1 qualifier. I shot a good final round but wasn’t able to pull off the win. I lost by only 4 points and managed a 5th place finish overall in the Masters Freestyle division.

It was a great trip overall, and I gained a ton of experience for future National competitions.

Thank you to Oranco Bowmen for the support. It was an honor to wear the Oranco jersey and represent our club at this large event.

Oranco Bowmen Archery Range

Occupying about 45 acres, Oranco Bowmen Archery Club is a NFAA certified 5-star range. This is the highest certification given by NFAA. We are the only range in Southern California with practice butts from 10-80 yards in 5-yard increments. If you need a place to "dial in" your bow, this is it!

Oranco also has two NFAA roving courses: Our Valley Course is a level 28-target course, consisting of 14 animal and 14 hunter paper targets. For those who desire a bit more of a physical challenge, our Mountain Course is a hilly 28-target course offering 14 Field targets and another set of 14 animal paper targets. The Layout changes occasionally.

Oranco is not responsible for lost or stolen belongings.

Please remember to lock your vehicles when you are not present and always take your equipment home with you. We have received reports about stolen equipment, and want everyone to understand that you alone are responsible for your belongings . We advise you to put your identification information on your belongings and try not to leave anything unattended.

Remember: We are open to the public on Sundays and during shoots. During these events it is much more difficult to track who is on range property, especially if people do not sign in at the office.

Be safe and responsible everyone.

Best Exercises for Hunters Hauling Meat

Whether you’re hauling elk meat out in a pack on your back, or dragging a dead buck up the ridge, hauling meat is no easy chore. You better have your body in shape for the task when success comes your way. Seriously, don’t underestimate this one. Every year hunters die from heart attacks while hunting. They weren’t ready for the physical exertion that comes with hunting, particularly packing out meat. So whether you’re packing in deep, or just dragging deer through the swamp, you need to be physically up for the job. Here’s a look some of the best exercises for hunters that will help get you there. They are designed to help you avoid injury as well as make getting that buck out of the woods a little less painful.

Beginner's Guide to Bowhunting Mule Deer

“Go west,” they say. If you’re a bowhunter looking for adventure, and bowhunting mule deer is on your adventure list, you should indeed head west. A do-it-yourself hunt for mule deer will be one of your most exciting and memorable hunts.
