September is the month that new fall yarns are arriving and being displayed in our shop. Please stop in and see what is new.

One yarn line that is very new for us is Wool Addicts by Lang Yarns. This line has yarn gauged in five weights: fingering, heavy worsted/aran, aran, chunky and super bulky. (We aren't currently stocking the super bulky, but can order it for you.) Each yarn weight has its own fiber content and texture, yet is pulled together by the same colorways: neutrals with a splash of aqua, blush and gold. A pattern book with designs that are somewhat simple, yet sophisticated, supports this yarn.

You will notice in our shop that many yarn companies are putting out super sized skeins of yarn -- 200 grams or so. For some knitters or crocheters, this makes it an easy-to-think-about project: grab a skein and make a shawl, super sized scarf, a hat and mitt set, etc. (And admittedly, it is nice to have a continuous flow of yarn while working on a large project.) Because the colorways of the yarns are interesting, you can work on an easy project and have a rewarding result.

We knit up Aisling, an easy-to-knit shawl pattern using Trendsetter's Gomitolo Versione. This is a 763-yard skein of a self-striping, worsted weight yarn in a 60%wool/40% acrylic blend. We also have giant skeins from Noro and Berroco.

The pattern is free on Ravelry and can be used with any yarn by just adjusting needle size.

We have new totes in the shop which we love! They are a perfect size for a knitting project and almost everything else. Plus, they are sturdy enough to stand up by themselves.

They are designed and managed in Maine, but sewn by family out of state. We are impressed by the choice of fabric colors and designs, and the quality of the fabric used in these totes. They retail for $44.00.

As many of you know, we love Good Karma Farm. At Good Karma Farm, they raise the animals, process and spin the fiber into yarn, and dye it as well.

They are lending us a sweater model for a few weeks. It is called the Belfast Pullover. The pattern is available for purchase on Ravelry, but it is free when you buy the yarn to make the pullover! We will have enough skeins in a few colorways for you to knit this modern classic. If you have time, you can visit Good Karma Farm nearby for an expanded selection of colorways.

Fiber College of Maine, an annual fiber festival which celebrates the fiber arts in all forms returns September 5-9. Play, learn, smile and share the joy of making in the September sunshine, on the beautiful Maine Coast among organic gardens and live music. Everyone is welcome -- whether you carefully choose a single class, pack your weekend with everything that fits, or come only with the goal of sitting and soaking up the atmosphere.

In addition to the workshops and booths, A La Carte classes (formerly known as "rolling classes") are offered, one-hour sessions with no pre-enrollment requirements, designed to give you a taste of something new. Walk around Friday, Saturday and Sunday during the Shopper's Boulevard Hours and choose what makes you smile. Your first class is free on Saturday and Sunday! ($10 gate fee will apply.) Classes are $20 each and material costs are minimal. Classes are appropriate for every age and ability level.

The first annual Machias Fiber Festival will take place on September 15, from 9 am to 3 pm, at the Lee/Pellon Center, 90 Main St., Machias, Maine. Free admission and parking.

Many fiber artists in downeast Maine practice traditional crafts, including knitting, crocheting, spinning and rug hooking. The event will be held in conjunction with the Machias Harvest Festival, which boasts delicious food, exciting vendors and activities for both adults and children. Come celebrate the closing of another beautiful Maine summer, and stock up with yarn and classes against the coming winter months.

Will Passy Pete predict six more weeks of summer? Find out on Labor Day (Monday. September 3), at 10 am, in Heritage Park, Belfast.

On Labor Day, according to Belfast, Maine tradition, Passy Pete the Lobster emerges from his cove in the Passagassawakeag River and predicts whether or not summer will last. Passy Pete, short for Passagassawakeag Pete, will be plucked from a trap in the river during a 10 am ceremony on Labor Day on the Belfast waterfront at Heritage Park. The Belfast Barons, dressed in tuxes and top hats, lead the lobster to shore, where The Maine Lobster will select one of two scrolls with his claws. Two business owners, David Crabiel and David Brassbridge, came up with the eccentric idea as a way to have fun. Join in on Labor Day to learn what Passy predicts.

If an emergency or disaster strikes, will you be prepared? To address this question, a Waldo County Emergency Preparedness Fair will be held on Saturday, September 8, from 9 am to 2 pm, at the Waldo County YMCA, 157 Lincolnville Ave., Belfast. The event features preparedness presentations, displays, vendors and door prizes, and free ice cream, garden vegetables, and an on-site lunch fundraiser (while supplies last). A special Shop Talk (part of the free public monthly lecture series sponsored by the Old Professor's Bookshop) will be presented on Saturday, September 8, at 3 pm. The title: Would Einstein Get a Job Today?

The event will feature Margaret Geller and Scott Kenyon of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Acting as a proposal review committee, astrophysicists Margaret Geller and Scott Kenyon present a skit to try to answer the question: Would Einstein, a maverick scientist in his time, be able to get a job today? The audience gets to answer the question too.

Maine Wienerfest is a celebration of dachshunds and the people who love them! Now in its 15th year, the event will be held on Sunday, September 9 from 11 am-3 pm at the Steamboat Landing Park in Belfast.

Maine Wienerfest originated as an informal picnic and gathering for families who lived with these adorable, tiny dogs. Gradually, it grew to include other activities with the number of dogs and dog lovers increasing each year. This year, P.A.W.S. Animal Adoption Center continues the tradition with all proceeds benefitting the shelter.

In addition to the picnic social, organized events include a Grand Parade of Dachshunds, Canine Costume Contest and a Doxie Derby. There will be also be a Wiener Cook-off Contest and raffle opportunities!

The Maine Wienerfest will be held rain or shine with gates opening at 10:30 am. Admission is $3 for adults, free for children (12 and under) and dogs. Food and pet-related vendors will be available on-site.

On Friday, September 14, from 8 am to 5 pm, at 19 Fahy St., Belfast, Belfast Dental Care is providing their third annual day of free dentistry to Maine residents who do not have dental  insurance. Registration begins 7:30 am and ends after the maximum possible patients are registered. Patients* will receive, on a first-come-first-served basis, one free procedure per person -- one filling, extraction or cleaning -- at no charge. Parking near the office will be limited. Patients may not park in the hospital lot.

*Ages 5 and above. Proof of age and residency required. Minors must be accompanied by parent or legal guardian. Photos of patients will be taken for ID purposes. Patients may be asked to sign a consent or release. Actual treatment provided will depend upon the health of the patient. Spaces are limited. Belfast Dental Care reserves the right to determine or refuse treatment.

On Tuesday, September 18, at 6:30 pm, Elizabeth W. Garber and Baron Wormser will give a joint reading/discussion on The Wages of Modernism at the Belfast Free Library, 106 High St.
This past spring, Wormser came out with a book of portraits, Legends of a Slow Explosion: 11 Modern Lives, and Garber published Implosion: A Memoir of an Architect's Daughter. For this talk they will each read from their books and talk about what the modernism of the second half of the twentieth century was about, particularly on a personal, individual level.

Wormser is the author of 15 books, including the novel Tom o' Vietnam and the memoir The Road Washes Out in Spring. He was the poet laureate of the state of Maine from 2000-2005.

Garber is the author of three books of poetry, True Affections: Poems from a Small Town, Listening Inside the Dance and Pierced by the Seasons. She was the Belfast Poet Laureate from 2006-2008.

The fall session of Belfast Senior College begins Thursday, September 20. Classes run for six consecutive Thursdays, ending October 25. All classes are offered at the Hutchinson Center on Route 3 in Belfast. Be sure to order your text(s) or materials at least two weeks in advance. You may register: 1) online; 2) by submitting a printed form by mail, or 3) in person at the Senior College Office.

You must be a member of a Maine Senior College to take a course. The membership year runs from August 1 to July 31. Annual membership is $25.00, September 1 thru August 31 (fee waived in summer). The Belfast Free Library is holding a photography contest for area teens! Three teens will win the opportunity to be Artists of the Month and have their photographs displayed in the Barbara Kramer Gallery for November.

Teens enter by submitting one photo in print form. The photo must be ready to hang in the BFL Teen Room by the contest deadline, September 21. Belfast photographer Rachel Epperly will serve as judge.
