Fromage a Trois 9781948705134
" Drawing on Brownlee's experience as a food writer, this highly sensual debut novel follows an Australian woman's journey through the cultural, culinary, and romantic offerings of Paris. Suddenly single, Melbourne resident Ella decides to spend a year abroad and is entranced by the beauty of Paris. She finds a part-time job washing dishes at a local coffee shop, Flat White, and meets Serge Marais, who works at a local fromagerie. As Ella samples the delights of French cheese at Serge's shop, he bets her that she can't try all the types of French cheese in a year. After posting the photos of her cheese tastings on Instagram, Ella gains numerous new followers; meanwhile, she embarks on a sizzling romance with Gaston, a gorgeous Frenchman she meets at Flat White. Ella soon finds another part-time job writing content for a food delivery app, and she moves into a beautiful apartment with Gaston's cousin Clotilde. Ella is unsure whether Gaston really loves her, and her friends tell her that Serge is attracted to her, setting up the titular love triangle. Brownlee craftily combines the beauty and charm of Paris with the allure of romance, creating a novel of sensory delight. Agent: Gregory Messina, Linwood Messina Literary. (Oct.)"

Aesop Lake  9780999499528
Excerpt: "Sarah Ward's  Aesop Lake  is a deceptively gentle yet fierce novel about trauma and recovery. Ward, a social worker, brings a great amount of expertise and empathy to her subject, yet she balances this with crisp, intelligent prose and also finds a clever way to weave Aesop's fables in the narrative."

Why Humanae Vitae Is Still Right  9781621642664
Excerpt: "...this new volume shows how the ethical, theological, spiritual and sociological case for Paul VI's controversial document remains strong. In fact, it shows how Humanae Vitae is even stronger today, following Pope John Paul II's Theology of the Body and the problems triggered by the sexual revolution."

Figley vs. the Mookling Hat  9780692106327
"Figley, an opossum/cow/finch hybrid, faces a choice. Follow the latest "fashion craze" to avoid being "a laughing stock," or find the courage to stand out. Ever since Queen Contessa started wearing a duck-moose creature called a "mookling" on her head, the fantastical residents of Mutasia have been sporting them, too. In fact, "everyone on Mutasia [has] a mookling hat...except Figley." With Billie Twinklecorn's party only hours away, and the stores "sold out" of the trendy headgear, Figley feels pressured to catch his own mookling. His attempts leave him sitting, wet and dejected, in a "swampy pond," and he arrives at the party in a "silly, squishy...squonk hat." This one-of-a-kind, donkey-squid cap boosts Figley's confidence and inspires everyone there to be "just like Figley!" Primarily a story centered on instilling a strong sense of self in readers who may be anxious about being different or fitting in, this tale may have some older readers connecting to its other ideas, such as the importance of creative problem-solving, the influence of peers, and the outcomes associated with blindly following fads. Vibrant and boldly colored cartoon illustrations that cover the entire page draw readers into Figley's world. Just don't read too much into the fact that this "mixed-up mix" of imaginative animals exploits a menagerie of other, smaller, perhaps endangered critters in the name of style. A valuable message about finding "something that makes you unique." (Picture book. 4-8) "
Rejoice, a Knife to the Heart  9781773740126
"This talky novel of first contact with reluctant alien overlords enjoys overturning notions of human exceptionalism. Seeking a facilitator for human-alien interactions, aliens abduct Canadian SF author Samantha August and try, over the course of many chapters, to debate her into agreeing to be their spokesperson. Meanwhile, their invasion (euphemistically called "the Intervention") proceeds, with swaths of wilderness suddenly off-limits to humans and violent acts stopped in their tracks. Oil companies, warlords, and abusive husbands are unable to carry on with "business as usual." Erikson (the Malazan Book of the Fallen epic fantasy series) has fun skewering many high-profile targets such as televangelists, billionaire investors, and politicians (particularly a stubby-fingered, hotel-owning U.S. president), and also dissects many of the unquestioned beliefs of contemporary capitalism, neoliberal politics, and even Star Trek's prime directive. In the end, he suggests, humans can only change so much. Readers who are not averse to some lengthy Socratic dialogue ("If you will allow me this brief digression") and Erikson's own unquestioned belief that only SF authors are smart enough to save the world will find a wealth of pointed arguments that burst many irrational bubbles.
