Remembering Bev Bowers

Women Writing for (a) Change lost a writer, supporter, and amazing spirit on November 25th. Beverly A. Bowers ("Bev") brought many new people to WWf(a)C. She was an enthusiastic extrovert and when she discovered a gem, she had to share it.

Perhaps most known for collaborating on events, Bev founded and was director of WomensWay of Ohio & Kentucky. Their mission was to support women in the arts. Bev produced many concerts and events with artists of all kinds and held them here: SWAN Day (Supporting Women Artists Now), Krista Detor & Friends, Raison d'etre, Troubadours of Divine Bliss, and innumerable open mics. Many walked through our doors and enjoyed the Friday Night Salon (2012 until Bev's health faltered). She reached out to authors, spiritual healers, comedians, and musicians to share over a potluck. Sometimes there was a theme and those who wished wrote and shared fastwrites. Last January Bev promoted "A Festival of Words" at Arnolds with words from twenty women and music from Randy Weeks and B.J. Stahl. May 2012 she was instrumental in bringing singer-musician Carrie Newcomer to Grailville. Loving the blues, she enticed Georgian blues star E.J. Kight to town and assisted in summer blues festivals. She even helped with two films!

The Wednesday evening co-ed class was graced with Bev's presence since summer 2017. In small group with Randy Weeks, Meg Howes, and Chris Gutjahr, she transformed them into friends. All three shared memories at Sunday's memorial, bringing over a hundred people to mourn, remember, and laugh at anecdotes about Bev.

There's a new saying around town--"That's so Bev!" Even we wordsmiths have difficulty in describing such an indomitable spirit. When you see a butterfly, think of Bev. She leaves behind her partner of 37 years, Sue Tekulve, daughter Shelley, and granddaughter Casey.

Gratitude for Your Generosity

Day of Giving Challenge adds $7,000 to Scholarship and Outreach funding!

Gifts from 77 generous souls made this possible! We are grateful to the entire community for this support, for recent #GivingTuesday donations, and for all the many gifts throughout the year. It is your support that allows Women Writing for (a) Change to offer the many writing circles, including outreach in the community and scholarships.

Together, these contributions total $58,000 toward our $65,000 Annual Giving goal for 2019. Just $7,000 to go! With the continued generosity of this community, we will reach $65,000 by year-end. Thanks and appreciation to each of you for being a part of Women Writing for (a) Change!

You don't have to wait until summer to experience our writing circles for young people! Join us over Winter Break, whether it's your first visit or you've lost count!
