  • Wearable sensors may predict aggression in people with autism
  • A small wristband gives caregivers a one-minute warning that an individual with autism is about to become aggressive toward himself or others. Researchers presented the unpublished results today at the 2018 International Society for Autism Research annual meeting in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Because it is unpredictable, aggression has significant quality-of-life ramifications for people with autism and their caregivers, says co-lead researcher Matthew Goodwin, associate professor at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, who presented the findings. "Parents, who know their kids better than anybody, oftentimes have a hard time predicting when their kid is going to engage in some of these behaviors," he says.

The device, made by a Massachusetts-based company called Empatica, detects an individual's heart rate, sweat levels, movement and skin temperature. Read on...

  • Few parents recognize regression in their children with autism
  • Many children eventually diagnosed with autism lose social skills between 18 months and 3 years of age. But few parents notice this trend, according to data from a large Norwegian study.

Researchers presented the unpublished results yesterday at the 2018 International Society for Autism Research annual meeting in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Parents notice regression in only 2 percent of the children who lost social skills, according to the study.

Regression can be characterized by either a sharp or gradual loss of language, social and other skills. Many more children with autism regress than researchers originally thought, says Alexandra Havdahl, a research fellow at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom, who presented the findings. • Rise in U.S. autism prevalence stems mainly from 'mild' cases
  • The bulk of the increase in autism prevalence the United States between 2000 and 2012 can be attributed to children on the mild end of the spectrum.

The findings come from prevalence data gathered by the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network (ADDM) of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Researchers presented the unpublished results today at the 2018 International Society for Autism Research annual meeting in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

In a separate report, researchers also presented early estimates of autism's prevalence in Europe, based on surveys in 14 countries.

Estimates of autism's prevalence in the U.S. have risen significantly from 1 in 150 children in 2000, when the ADDM began tracking it, to 1 in 59 children for data collected in 2014. There are several theories about the reasons for this rise, but most experts agree that most of it is the result of increased awareness about the condition. Read on...

  • Young girls with autism have more psychiatric problems than boys
  • A greater proportion of 3-year-old girls than boys with autism have psychiatric features such as anxiety and angry moods. These young girls also tend to have poor daily-living and other 'adaptive functioning' skills. Researchers presented the unpublished results yesterday at the 2018 International Society for Autism Research annual meeting in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Preliminary data hint that an enlarged amygdala, an emotion hub in the brain, underlies some of the problems in girls.

The study is one of the first to examine psychiatric features in children as young as 3. Many of these features also accompany attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and oppositional defiant disorder, among other conditions. Read on...

  • Self Determination Update
  • In October of 2013, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. signed into law the Self-Determination Program, which will provide consumers and their families with more freedom, control, and responsibility in choosing services and supports to help them meet objectives in their Individual Program Plan. Learn more about Self Determination.

The Department is pleased to announce that on March 13, 2018, the Home and Community-Based Services Waiver application seeking federal funding for the Self-Determination Program was formally re-submitted to the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

A copy of the Waiver application is available below. CMS has 90 days to either approve the application, deny the application or request additional information. Because of all the work that's been done with CMS to prepare for this formal re-submission, we are very hopeful the application will be approved. We will post updates regarding communications with CMS about the status of the application. Updates will be posted as we progress toward implementation.
