The National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association is pleased to announce the 2018 Scholar American recipients. The honor is bestowed on NIRA members that have earned points at a 2018-2019 NIRA sanctioned rodeo, been in college for more than one term, earned a 3.5 cumulative grade point average, and have been nominated by their rodeo coach. The College of Southern Idaho recipients are as follows:

Wear GOLD for World Suicide Day on Sept 10
|
 Join us Around the Globe to raise awareness of the risks of suicide and to fund suicide prevention activities. A person dies every 40 seconds by suicide and up to 25 times as many again make a suicide attempt. There are also many more people who have been bereaved by suicide or have been close to someone who has made an attempt. This World Suicide Prevention Day event is about our global community: to encourage us to engage with each other and to join together to spread awareness of suicide prevention.
Remember that we can Report a Concern on the CSI main and safety websites. If you see something, say something. If you're worried about someone, let the CARE team know. They will take immediate action to investigate and respond appropriately.

Astronomers are discovering more and more planets orbiting other stars. These planets now number in the thousands, but only a precious few of those might harbor conditions suitable for life. One such planet orbits the nearest star, Proxima Centauri, only 4.3 light-years away. What will it take to explore this planet? In a word: SPEED! Faster Than Light: The Dream of Interstellar Flight examines the need for speed to cross the huge interstellar distances to put robotic probes, and maybe, one day, humans, in orbit or on the surface of these potentially habitable worlds. Narrator Sean Bean takes the audience on dazzling rides aboard futuristic spacecraft, employing breakthrough concepts in physics, designed to achieve the speeds necessary to make a journey to another star system feasible. Just how far can our technology take us? Is warp drive more than just science fiction?

| Over 60 and Getting Fit and Active Aging Classes at CSI |
Registration is now open for Over 60 and Getting Fit and Active Aging classes at CSI. The Over 60 and Getting Fit program offers classes at eleven southern Idaho locations. Participants can sign up on the first day they attend the program, which is free of charge to everyone 60 years and older. CSI in partnership with the Office on Aging has sponsored the Over 60 program each fall and spring semester for more than 30 years. It has become a model for other senior fitness programs across the nation.
Classes begin September 9, 2019.
The Active Aging fall schedule boasts a variety of fitness classes. These classes are generally $35 per person per semester.

 Join CSI Counseling Services and the Outdoor Recreation Program in celebrating World Suicide Prevention Day north of the Taylor building from

Open Auditions!!!
The Eugene Ballet- Toni Pimble, artistic director will be coming to Twin Falls to perform the holiday classic The Nutcracker on December 6 and 7. We need your help to fill the roles of Baby Mice, Angels, Bon Bons, Party Guests, and Flowers. This is a chance to dance on stage with a professional ballet company!
Auditions will take place on Thursday, September 12 between 4 and 8:30 p.m. in the CSI Fine Arts Auditorium on the CSI Campus.
The Eugene Ballet requests that all participants arrive at the audition at least 15 minutes prior to the audition time and be ready to dance (dressed and stretched). Because of how the auditions are ran, late-comers will not be allowed to audition. Rehearsals will fall on Saturday afternoons in October and November.
There will be a $10 audition fee. Checks payable to Eugene Ballet.
Nutcracker audition times are as follows:
4:00 Baby Mice Ages 5-7 no height requirement 1 yr ballet pref.
4:30 Angels Ages 7-9 must be under 4'6" 1 yr. ballet min.
5:00 Bonbons Ages 9-11 must be under 5' 2 yr. ballet min.
6:15 Party Children Ages 11-15 must be under 5'2" 3 yr. ballet min.
8:00 Waltz of the Flowers Ages 12-18 5'2" and over 3 yr. pointe min.
Other Notes:
* Please make sure that children audition for the proper roles.
* Students auditioning must be the appropriate age at the time of the audition, not the time of the performance.
* Boys and girls are welcome to audition for all parts except "Waltz of the Flowers", which is only open to advanced female students.
* Girls should wear class uniform, or a solid colored leotard, pink tights and pink ballet shoes, and hair should be secured in a bun.
* Boys should wear white t-shirt, black tights and black ballet shoes.
* All students audition in flat technique shoes EXCEPT "Waltz of the Flowers", who audition on pointe.
* Students should arrive at least 15 minutes prior to audition time to fill out registration forms.
STUDENTS MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR ALL REHEARSALS AND THE PERFORMANCES.
Rehearsals will fall on Saturdays October - December with Rayni Capps.

Awarding College Credit for Military Training

Rexburg resident Marjorie Price has had a varied career. She's worked in marketing, in higher education, and she is an Army veteran. "I served two years in active duty and six years in the reserves," Price said.
Now, she is spearheading a State Board of Education effort to see that military veterans are granted college credit for specialized training received while in the service. "It's been known for a long time that there is college-level training going on in the military but it wasn't very well understood that many general education topics are covered during military training as well," she said.
Price has spent the last several months, cataloging the general education course work covered in various forms of military training, creating a crosswalk that aligns those training elements with requirements for college-level general education in math, English, science, oral communication, arts and humanities and social sciences. "This crosswalk will help veterans identify whether they've already completed some of their math, science, English, etc. in the military, and apply that toward college credit needed to earn a degree," she said.
The "Gen Ed Crosswalk" covers over 1,000 military occupations and courses building on work done by the American Council on Education and used in other states to grant college credit to military veterans for their training. Using funds provided by Lumina Foundation, the State Board contracted with Price to develop the crosswalk for statewide use by all eight of Idaho's public institutions. "Anybody returning to Idaho or coming here after serving in the military will know how their training and education will count toward a post-secondary credential no matter where they want to attend college in our state," State Board Chief Academic Officer Randall Brumfield said.
The Gen Ed Crosswalk will be considered by the State Board later this year. If approved, it will be reviewed by faculty and implemented first at the College of Eastern Idaho (CEI) in Idaho Falls. "This approach will assure academic requirements are met while recognizing the skills and knowledge a veteran may already have," CEI President Dr. Rick Aman said. "The result will be helping these prior military students to decrease their educational costs and shorten the time it takes to earn a degree."
Marjorie Price knows firsthand how important that is for a military veteran entering the next phase of their career after service to their country. "When I left the service, I attended a community college in California that allowed credit for prior learning," she said. "I was trained as a broadcast journalist in the military and the college gave me 30 credits toward my degree, an entire year's worth of college."
Price earned her associates degree, then went on to earn a bachelor's degree and two graduate degrees. She credits the jump-start given to her by that community college with having enough money and time to finish her baccalaureate. "A lot of working-aged adults who have served in the military avoid going back to college to get their degree because they think it will take so long," she said. "I got to accelerate completion of my own degree and that is a lesson I'll never forget."

The BKG Fall Conference "Supporting Grieving Children & Teens: Theory, Techniques and Ethical Considerations for Care" will be held on Friday, September 27, at St. Luke's Medical Center, Oaks Rooms. Check in is at 8:30 a.m. with the opening session at 9 a.m. Cost is $40 and includes lunch and CEUs. Guest Facilitator is Andy McNiel, past Executive Director of the National Alliance for Grieving Children.

If you are interested in joining the College of Southern Idaho team for the Walk for Freedom on October 19, 2019 at the CSI Expo Center here is what you need to do:
- Register at A21.ORG/WALK
- Find the Twin Falls Walk and Register
- Adults 18+
- Children 13-17 (Participants under 13 do not need to register. They can walk with a registered adult the day of the walk)
- Create an Account
- Join the CSI Team and help raise $1000 as a group. Our Team Name is "College of Southern Idaho"
- Invite your friends and family to join too!
- See you at the Walk!
