September 2018 Exhibits

The Washington County Arts Council features two artists, Rebecca Perkins and Kathryn Toothman for the month of September 2018 with an opening reception form 5-7pm on Thursday, August 30, 2018.
“Rebecca Perkins: Breathing in Color” and “Katie Toothman: Darlin’ & Jed’s Woodland Friends” featured in September 2018 on Thursday, August 30, 2018 and runs through October 2, 2018 .
Washington Goes Purple

The Washington County Arts Council supports “Washington Goes Purple” to promote substance abuse awareness to prevent addiction.

October 2018 Exhibit

The Washington County Arts Council is pleased to host “Appalachian Spring in Hagerstown” a photography exhibit by Ira Lourie and students from Barbara Ingram School for the Arts (teacher, Mark Youngblood); Clear Spring High School (teacher, Josh Edwards); and Williamsport High School (teacher, Jonathan Hearn).

Dr. Lourie was asked to prepare photos to accompany the MSO October 2018 concert and the project under Dr. Lourie’s direction expanded to a month-long-gallery exhibit including some talented local students.

Dr. Lourie has already spent instruction time with the classes at each school and under his direction, the teachers have chosen over 68 works to display.
Taste of the Arts: Downtown Hagerstown
Thursday, October 4, 2018 at 5-8pm

Delight all of your senses with the sights and sounds of local artists while sampling culinary treats at various downtown venues. Entertainment by Barbara Ingram School for the Arts students & other talented local artists.

Get your passport ticket stamped at every venue and be eligible to win a variety of prizes! Bring your stamped passport to the Washington County Arts Council when completed visits at all venues. Tickets sold at The Maryland Theatre box office and all venues are within walking distance of City Center.

Art Market - Wind Down

“Wind Down, Downtown Hagerstown, MARYLAND” is a downtown monthly event in conjunction with The Maryland Theatre, The Washington County Arts Council and the City of Hagerstown…..that is fun for all ages. The October 2018 event, on Friday, October 5, 2018, offers artists the 2018 FREAKY FRIDAY ART MARKET, a venue to demonstrate and sell their art while enjoying local food, beverages and entertainment.

The Washington County Arts Council (WCAC), along with the committee members of the Wind Down, Downtown Hagerstown, MARYLAND, are pleased to invite visual artists to answer a “Call to Artists” for the opportunity of be a part of the juried event 2018 FREAKY FRIDAY ART MARKET on Friday, October 5, 2018 from 6:00 pm-9:00 pm to be held in conjunction with Wind Down, Downtown Hagerstown, MARYLAND.

Schedule

  •  Artists are encouraged to submit up to three renderings of their work for review.
  •  Images must be submitted in a jpeg format and files should be labeled:
  •  “Last Name___ First Name___ Title of Work, ___Medium”
  •  Please email images of the works to be considered along with the attached application and hold harmless agreement to: gallerymanager@washingtoncountyarts.com.
  •  Include full name, address, telephone and email address.
  •  Alternatively, artists may submit digital images by sending a CD, marked with the artist’s name, and a completed entry form to: Washington County Arts Council, Inc., 34 S. Potomac Street, Hagerstown, MD 21740. Artists who would like to have the CD returned should include a stamped, self-addressed return envelope.
  • All entries must be submitted by Friday, September 28, 2018. Artists will be notified of selection by Wednesday, October 3, 2018.

In the event of inclement weather, the 2018 FREAKY FRIDAY ART MARKET/“Wind Down, Downtown Hagerstown, MARYLAND” will be cancelled. In the event of cancellation, all space reservation fees will be returned to artists. The cancellation will be decided by 4:00 pm on Friday, October 5, 2018. Please provide a cell phone number on the application; a text message will be sent in case of cancellation.

“A Servant’s Life” an exhibit at the Miller House Museum
August 4 - September 29, 2018 • Tuesday – Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Roll up your sleeves to experience the new exhibit at the Miller House Museum! In “A Servant’s Life”, household artifacts, photographs, and more plunge visitors into the life of a servant at the Miller House. Follow the daily routine of a 19th century servant as you move throughout the museum in this multi-story, interactive exhibit. Learn more about the lives and stories of Miller House servants, as well as those who served in other households throughout local history, with a tour of this new exhibit.
Highlights include an original 1805 copy of a servant’s manual and authentic clothing worn by 19th century kitchen staff.
“A Servant’s Life” will run from Saturday, August 4th to Saturday, September 29th. The exhibit will kick off with a free butter making demonstration on Saturday, August 4th. The exhibit will be open to the public during regular museum hours, Tuesday – Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Entrance to the exhibit is included with regular museum admission.

Throughout the run of the exhibit, the Washington County Historical Society will be hosting lectures, workshops, and other activities associated with the event. Please contact us or consult our website for more information about these additional upcoming events.

Each of our farm to table dinners offers several courses: a sharable appetizer platter, a light first entree or salad, a main entree, and dessert. The courses are paired with your choice of local wine or beer. We work to provide alternatives for those with food allergies and sensitivities, so please notify the staff of any food requirements at the time when you purchase your tickets. Washington County Historical Society hosts its Annual Meeting

Washington County Historical Society hosts its Annual Meeting on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 from 5-7PM at the Miller House Museum and Gardens as the Society celebrates its accomplishments of FY2018.  Members and non-members are invited to the free event to hear about upcoming programs, events, exhibits and how Washington County Historical Society is making history fun for everyone!

Mr. Dan Spedden, president of the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention & Visitors Bureau, will be the guest speaker. A former state park ranger and Park Superintendent, Mr. Spedden has been a longtime supporter and promoter of local heritage tourism and the county's many cultural institutions. He serves as President of the Board of Directors of the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area and was appointed to the Maryland Tourism Development Council by Governor Hogan in 2016. This year, the Maryland Tourism Coalition recognized Mr. Spedden as a Tourism Advocate for his work promoting heritage tourism.

U.S. Navy Country Current to perform Sept. 18 at HCC

The Hagerstown Community College Alumni Association will host the U.S. Navy Country Current as part of its annual Red, White and Blue Summer Concert Series, on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018 at 6:15 p.m., in HCC’s Alumni Amphitheater.

The Country Current is an eight-member country-bluegrass ensemble originally formed in 1973 under the leadership of banjo player Bill Emerson. Currently, the group is under the direction of Christina Catalanotto and Daniel Stewart. In support of Navy recruiting, the Country Current tours the United States each year and has performed alongside a host of country artists including Brooks and Dunn, Charlie Daniels, Vince Gill, Toby Keith, Alison Krauss, Boots Randolph, the Statler Brothers, and others.

Sponsored by the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors
Bureau, Korean War Veterans Association Chapter 312, Joint Veterans Council, Forty & Eight Voiture 651, and the AMVETS Post 10 Riders, this concert is free and open to the public. Concessions will be available for purchase. Please note that no outside food is permitted on the amphitheater grounds and concerts are subject to change by the U.S. Military.

The Political Roots of Abstraction in Art: Abstraction Series II

Dr. Chris Coltrin will discuss the historical roots of abstraction with an emphasis on Courbet.

Dr. Chris Coltrin is currently an Associate Professor at Shepherd University, in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. His research centers on analyzing apocalyptic-themed religious paintings produced in Britain during the first half of the nineteenth century, with an emphasis on assessing the political implications of religious themed works of art.
