Investigation of New EC Building & Schofield Gym Construction
The Republic School District's number one priority is taking care of students and fellow teammates. This focus takes on many different approaches, and one of those is our dedication to making sure we have safe and adequate facilities to meet all student needs. With our community's help, we've been able to implement that dedication time and time again.

Because of this, along with our dedication to continuous improvement, we are currently investigating the construction of a new Early Childhood Center along with a gymnasium at Schofield Elementary. Each facility would be constructed to serve as a high wind structure. Although preliminary, the current plan for funding these projects is through a lease purchase. Below are some bullet points to share why these facilities are needed:

Early Childhood Center with Attached High Wind Structure
  • Our district philosophy is that early childhood education is an essential element to making sure students are successful in the traditional kindergarten through 12th grade setting. Our current facility has four classrooms and frankly, we have outgrown this building due to the continued growth in our community. To compensate, four additional classrooms are being utilized for preschool (full day and half day) at McCulloch and Sweeny Elementaries. Also, we have a waiting list for many of our EC classrooms. It's important that we expand our early childhood offerings to meet the needs of this growth. In addition, we need to be able to use the preschool classrooms at McCulloch and Sweeny for elementary classrooms as our community grows.
  • In addition to the increased preschool enrollment, the district's early childhood special education population has grown by 40% in the past year.
  • The design goal will be to create a facility that can serve double the current number of EC families. The proposed location of the facility is on the open lot next to Price Elementary which once housed the old football stadium that was decommissioned last year.
  • Besides doubling the classroom and therapy spaces available, our initial design "must haves" include a multi-purpose area for Early Childhood events and activities that can also serve as a high wind structure to shelter both EC and Price Elementary students and employees during extreme weather events, like tornado warnings.
Gymnasium and High Wind Structure at Schofield Elementary:
  • Currently Schofield Elementary does not have a gymnasium area so all students must cross Anderson Street to attend PE classes at McCulloch Elementary. The same is true for all building assemblies.
  • Initially, the hope was to have a FEMA Safe Room at Schofield that would also serve as the gym, like the one at Sweeny Elementary. However, the district applied for FEMA grants multiple times and was denied. Therefore, a new funding source has to be determined to allow the district to construct this structure as stated in the facility improvement plan.
  • Although the gymnasium will not be FEMA certified, the initial plan is to create a high wind structure that can withstand the same wind velocities as a FEMA certified safe room. This facility would shelter students and employees from Schofield and McCulloch in inclement weather.
As previously stated, the district is investigating this construction process and those findings will be shared at the September Board of Education meeting. This topic will be a discussion item for the Board of Education. After that meeting the district will proceed per the Board's direction, and we will share next steps at that time.

Elementary Progress & Grade Reports Distributed Electronically Starting 9/20
It's time to begin sharing student progress with our families! This year elementary progress and grade reports will be distributed via email (like secondary students receive) instead of distributing printed copies. Please make sure you have an updated email on file with your child's school office. The first progress report will be distributed on Friday, September 20. Students in 1st grade through 5th grade will receive their reports via email. However, kindergarten students will instead receive a hard copy in backpacks summarizing their progress from first quarter on September 20. As a reminder, the district utilizes the standards based grading system for elementary students. For details visit https://www.republicschools.org/sbg.

As a reminder, you can find Republic School District on Facebook and Twitter! In addition, all buildings and the STRIPES 360 program have a Facebook pages. RMS and RHS also have Twitter accounts, and RHS is on Instagram. Check them out! Here are a few highlights:

SEPTEMBER 9:
Today was Price Elementary's first Family Day of the 2019-2020 school year! Each student, K-5, is placed in a school family led by a classroom teacher when they begin attending Price. This family stays together the student's entire school career at Price, adding a new group of kindergarten students each year. During these monthly meetings, the families spend time getting to know one another, learning the 7 habits, and focusing on how they can live the Price mission statement: Becoming World Changers Through Kindness and Leadership. #repmoproud

SEPTEMBER 5:
What's better than an extra recess?! Look at these Lyon leaders crushing goals and we've not even been in school a month! In Republic we are all about setting goals...individual, classroom, building, district, personal, academic, professional, behavioral...you name it, we set a goal and action plan for it and achieve it! #repmoproud

SEPTEMBER 3:
RHS Senior, Kurt Goddard attended the Washington Youth Summit on the Environment (WYSE) at George Mason University. Kurt was one of only 300 High School National Youth Delegates from all over the country who got to attend! The Summit included several formal events with sessions and speeches from leading experts in the environmental and conservation fields. Additionally, Kurt went behind the scenes at the National Zoo, enjoyed a twilight monument tour, went to the National Geographic Headquarters, met individually with a Missouri state representative about environmental issues on Capitol Hill, participated in a field study (which included a canoe ride on the Rappahannock River to collect water samples), and so much more. Kurt received college credit for attending the Summit as well! What an amazing experience!!! #repmoproud

State Assessment Individual Student Reports
Each spring students across the district participate in state assessments (MAP and EOC). We have been notified by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) that Individual Student Reports (ISR) are available. For students currently in grades 6-12, ISRs will be distributed on September 9 for those who participated in state assessments last spring. For students currently in grades 4 & 5, ISRs will be distributed to families during Parent Teacher Conferences the week of October 28 (more information to come).

Information for how to interpret your child's results will be included with the ISR. If you have any questions or would like to see your child's report prior to the distribution times, please contact your child's school counselor or Jennifer Renegar, District Test Coordinator (732-3605, ext 6014).
