A message from the President . . .
T he tumult has begun...
Tickets and seat assignments for the High Holidays have been sent out via email.  If you have NOT received yours or need to make a change, please call Kate in the office for help.  We can print Tickets in the office for you to pick up, or mail.  We can resend them to you if you have not received them, and most importantly we can correct any errors.  This is the first year of "electronic" Tickets, and of course it's been a challenge.  Thank all for understanding.

Holiday Alliyot have been assigned and have also been mailed.
Walter Winter and Michelle Bannon have been working very hard to orchestrate the upcoming High Holiday Services.  It is a true test to schedule everyone. If you have received a card, please respond promptly as there are over 100 different "kibbuds" or honors, and we want to include as many as possible to accommodate your honor with your attendance.

Rabbi Kozlow has been working hard on Sermons and preparation with Rabbi Golden our visiting Cantor as well as keeping up a hectic pre-holiday schedule that includes Selichot Services this Saturday, Tashlich and our annual Cemetery visitation this Sunday.  You can follow all of this on our web site www.bnaiisraelilm.org.  Thanks to Irv and Dottie Freedland for providing accomations for Rabbi Golden, and thanks to those that have invited Rabbi Golden to enjoy a meal with them.

Efriam Jaronowski and the Men's Club are again putting together our Yizkor Book of Remembrance and is anxiously awaiting all of you to respond with the names of your loved ones.  More information is included below in this Newsletter and on the web site.

Niki Zeldin and our Sisterhood are "fixin" to get ready for all the High Holiday events by preparing Apples and Honey for the conclusion of Rosh Hashanah services and looking for volunteers to help with our Annual Break the Fast following our Neilah service on Yom Kippur.  Please make reservations.  You don't want to miss Scott Diamond'fs fabulous Bloody Mary and Mimosa bar.

The annual cleanup and inventory of Talasim and Yarmulkes by Gayle Ginsberg and Janice Kingoff has begun, and we can use your slightly used kippot to replace some of the very old ones.  Only the like new ones please.

Our Gabbi's, Torah readers, Shofar blowers, silver polishers are all busy getting ready for the holidays.  And our Vice President, Harold Eichenholz has a steady hand on everything from the roof to the floor.  Treasurer Jerry Smith is preparing for our annual Yom Kippur appeal and making sure all the bills are paid.  And our Secretary Joanna Puritz has been helping with all our printing needs and
correspondence.

Todah Rabah to all and thank you for your passion as we begin these yearly rituals.

In the kitchen
I especially want to thank all those who made our Second Annual Shul Day so successful.  Our new membership duo, Stan Prushik and Barry Laub, Sue Mintzes representing Hospice, Gayle Ginsberg and Anita Liebeskind representing Hadassah, Sisterhood and UJA. Efriam Jaronowski for Men's Club, and Jerry Spivak and Carol Atwood for helping with Shul Cloud our web site and membership lists.  Ivan Schlager for photography and Yves Sion for helping set up and cleanup.  I especially am grateful for Lyne and Steve Glaser who put out the annual Israeli breakfast buffet.
With the help of Nikki Zeldin, Michelle Bannon, Pam Weiss Deb Meyerson, Dottie Freedland, Rena Goldwasser, and Sharon Dresbach.  It was a great event.  Thanks to all.

So, as you can see, the excitement is building for the Holidays, and doesn't end until after Sukkot and Shemini Atzeret.  Stay tuned for more information and please if you have ideas on how to bring more meaning into these upcoming days please share.

See you in Shul,

Barry

Sisterhood Book Club Meeting: August 29, 2018
The Sisterhood Book Club, hosted by Judy Malman, gathered at Carolina Bay in a private dining room on August 29 th to discuss Nicole Krauss's The History of Love. Judy arranged delicious snacks in a lovely setting as we discussed the novel's tales of Polish Holocaust survivors, writers, and other characters whose lives are marked by history and also by their journeys from Europe to New York, to Israel, to Chile and to Argentina.  While the book was challenging to read, many thought it had a lot to say about love, memory, people's yearning to be visible to others, language (Yiddish, Hebrew, English, Spanish, and nonverbal communication), and the long-range effects of the Holocaust on Jewish lives, from generation to generation.  Judy also gave us some information about the author's life and mentioned excerpts from reviews of the novel.
Our discussants were: Mimi Bloch, Arlene Burns, Roberta Eichenholz, Rena Goldwasser, Elaine Lathrop, Dodi Levy, Judy Malman, Sue Mintzes, Sandy Moskowitz, Pam Sender, and Barbara Waxman. Many thanks to Judy for her gracious hosting and to all the participants for their great insights about the novel.
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, October 31, from 1-3 PM, at the home of Dodi Levy. We will discuss Neil Simon's play, Brighton Beach Memoirs, which is available on Amazon.  Pam Sender, our Sisterhood librarian, will also order a copy for the synagogue library.
All Sisterhood members are welcome to participate in our book club. If you are interested, please contact Barbara Waxman, [email protected], and she will put you on our mailing list.
