Rally Sunday, September 9
That night the Lord stood near him and said, "Keep up your courage! For just as you have testified for me in Jerusalem, so you must bear witness also in Rome.

In early June, I began a sermon series outlining the emergence of the early church based on the Book of the Acts of the Apostles. Through the course of the summer, we have listened to the stories of the apostles as the proclamation of Jesus' death and resurrection gradually moved from the city of Jerusalem, to Judea and Samaria to the ends of the earth in the Jewish communities living in the diaspora around the Mediterranean Sea. The Jewish synagogues were the natural places for the apostles to share the good news of Jesus, but there was also growing tension. Gentiles were joining the synagogues in disproportionate numbers. Traditional Jews were afraid they would lose their historic identity. The apostles and the Jewish leaders were fundamentally fighting for the heart of Judaism. While some believed that Christianity was the fulfillment of the Jewish faith, others believed it was a radical break off sect. By the year 100 AD, the two practices would become two separate religions.
St. Paul was the champion of the emerging Christian movement who taught that in Jesus Christ, there was no distinction between Jews or Greeks, servants or freed, and between male or female. He believed that God truly showed no partiality. Throughout his life as a missionary, Paul felt it was his role to bring this news to the Emperor in Rome. It was affirmed over and over again. When Paul was first captured by Roman soldiers in Jerusalem who sought to save him from the crowds, he had a vision that the Lord would lead him to Rome. Eventually, in spite of secret plots to kill him, Paul was transferred Rome in the year 60 AD.
The Book of Acts ends abruptly with Paul preaching in Rome for two years while awaiting trial before the Emperor. Oddly, we never read that he ever addressed him in scripture. Paul was not a bishop of Rome, nor did he bring Christianity to Rome since there were already Christians in the city. But Paul did fulfill the words Jesus' spoke at his ascension. The gospel would be proclaimed through Paul to the ends of the earth. And who better to represent the ends of the earth, than the emperor?
According to tradition, Paul addressed the tyrannical emperor Nero, although he was actually relatively sane at this stage of his reign.
And what happened then? It is not written in the Book of Acts either, but legend states, and it is hinted at in the Book of Timothy, that St. Paul headed off on yet another missionary journey, this time to Spain. That's a wonderful reminder for all of us. We may reach our goals in life, but there is still work to be done in making disciples of all nations.
My friends, that is what Rally Sunday is all about. It is an occasion when we are being reset to do the work of God's kingdom and make disciple of all nations. So join us on Sunday, September 9th, as we recommit ourselves to the mission of Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church. Our Saviour's Housing Shelter Meals
Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church has provided a meal for 40 the first Friday of every month for many years. This is a wonderful opportunity for families or a group of friends to work together!

We are looking forward to the start of Sunday School on September 9. Sunday School is offered for children who are age 3 by September 1 through those entering 6th grade. Working Speaker Series
Working is the theme of an ongoing speaker series in which people talk about what they do all day and how they feel about what they do. Many people within our congregation are engaged in fascinating work, and this series gives us an opportunity to learn more about what they do.
The next session will be Sunday, September 23rd and will focus on a program that helps women get back to work after living in traumatic environments. The speaker is
Jennifer J. Polzin, CEO of Tubman, a nonprofit organization serving people of all ages and backgrounds who have experienced relationship violence, exploitation, homelessness, addiction, or mental health challenges. She will share information about how trauma can impact finding or maintaining meaningful employment, resources for employees, how employers can provide a safe environment where people can do their best work, and answer questions about working in the nonprofit sector.
Jennifer's talk will take place after a brief coffee break following the Sunday morning service. Those who are interested will be invited to take their coffee/tea into the Christy Room for about 45 minutes. The first 15-20 minutes will be an informal talk by Jennifer, leaving the remaining time for questions from those in attendance.

LOTI Church Council will host a gala on September 30th to raise funds for new carpeting in our Sanctuary. The event will include food, drinks, silent auction, and live music.
We are looking for auction items! Examples from the past are artwork, wine and food baskets, use of a cabin or timeshare, as well as voice lessons, special dinners at someone's house, pottery, cookie delivery, tickets to events, and whatever else you can provide that you think someone else might be interesting in procuring!
