Senator Warner Discusses Hot Cybersecurity Topics with GW Students

Figuring out how to get newly educated cybersecurity professionals more quickly through the security clearance process and into the workforce was one of the questions contemplated during Senator Warner’s (D-Va.) discussion with six undergraduate students in GW’s cybersecurity bachelor’s completion program.
 
Mr. Warner (B.A., ’77) came to GW’s Virginia Science & Technology Campus (VSTC) to share ideas with the cyber students following his talk at the Northern Virginia Technology Council’s event, an association of businesses, government agencies and service providers in the technology industry. The event was co-sponsored and hosted by GW/VSTC.

Dr. Arnie Grossblatt dedicated the last ten years as program director nurturing the growth of the master’s degree in publishing program. When he came to GW he brought extensive experience in technology publishing, which was just what the program needed to continue developing its curriculum and begin offering an online education option.
 
“Arnie Grossblatt led the master’s degree Publishing Program for ten years, creating a leading-edge curriculum responsive to the rapidly changing digital demands of the publishing industry. He assembled a faculty of nationally recognized leaders in the field and spearheaded the transformation of the highly successful face-to-face program into a superlative online degree program, said Jack Prostko, associate dean for learning and faculty development.

In Memoriam: Nancy Tappan, a Sustainable Urban Planning Student

Nancy Tappan, a well-respected student in the Sustainable Urban Planning Program passed away on July 25, 2018. When it became clear she wouldn’t be returning to school to finish the very end of her program, the George Washington University awarded her an honorary master’s degree. She was very happy to find out about the honorary degree shortly before she passed away.

Students Learn the Importance of Public-Private Partnerships in National Security Efforts

GW graduate students learned about national security issues in a new way by hearing the perspectives of professionals currently working in this specialized field. A team of five presenters from Guidehouse (formerly PwC Public Sector), a leading government consulting firm, lead a discussion on how private-public partnerships strengthen our country’s national security efforts with students in the Homeland Security and Cyber Security Strategy and Information Management master’s degree programs.

U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke and Principal Deputy Secretary for Indian Affairs John Tahsuda met with a group of high school students from across Indian Country in July who were attending the INSPIRE Pre-College Program.

INSPIRE is designed to motivate indigenous high school students to finish their education and become more politically involved. It provides a full scholarship to native students who want to spend three weeks on the GW campus to learn about intergovernmental relations between tribal governments and the federal government. It is offered through the AT&T Center for Indigenous Politics & Policy (CIPP).

Publishing Program Welcomes New Director

The College is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. John W. Warren as Associate Professor and Director of the  Publishing Program effective Aug. 13. Warren will assume his new role following the retirement of long-time director Dr. Arnie Grossblatt.

While new to this position, Mr. Warren had already taught a variety of courses in CPS’ Publishing program as a part-time instructor over the past six years.

He has more than 25 years of senior management experience in publishing, having led groundbreaking initiatives in digital content development and distribution, including eBooks, short-form digital content, enhanced eBooks and websites, journals, and open educational resources. 

Collaborating for Success: A Stormwater Story

GW Alumna, Darlene Robbins, an ecological landscape designer based in Silver Spring, MD, designed a project to solve a stormwater problem. The solution turned into a group effort with GW faculty members Chris Sonne and Rebecca Stack engineering it and GW alumnus Jeff Potter installing it. 

Two GSPM Faculty's Fresh Look at Strategic Public Relations

GSPM faculty members Lawrence J. Parnell and Janis Teruggi Page are the authors of a new book, Introduction to Strategic Public Relations: Digital, Global and Socially Responsible Communication, published by SAGE Publications. According to their publisher the book prepares students for success in today’s fast-changing PR environment, with a strong emphasis on socially responsible communication strategies.

Since 2000, the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation has hosted an annual program in partnership with George Washington University’s Center for Excellence in Public Leadership (CEPL) to highlight the contributions of District of Columbia government employees who work behind the scenes to improve the lives of city residents.

At the Annual Cafritz Foundation Gala in June, James Robinson, the executive director of CEPL, said the center is honored to be the steward of the Cafritz Award program.
